Humphrey re-aggravates ankle injury; Giles limited vs. Mitchell
Quarterback Tate Humphrey missed the final three minutes of Mitchell's 30-14 loss to Gaither Friday night after apparently re-aggravating the ankle injury that caused him to miss the Mustangs' loss to Hudson last week. Humphrey was hit hard several times during the second half, but was finally knocked out after getting knocked over the chain gang on the far sideline late in the fourth quarter as Mitchell was attempting to put together a last-ditch drive. He was replaced by wide receiver Yaz Grabowski, a senior who started in place of Humphrey last week. Mustangs coach Scott Schmitz told Times correspondent Mike Camunas after the game that Humphrey would be re-evaluated Saturday.
Humphrey completed 18-of-30 passes for 256 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in the loss. It was a gutsy performance in a game that featured steady rain and a strong wind, not to mention the Cowboys' tough defense.
Another injury note from the game: Jarvis Giles, Gaither's senior running back and Hillsborough County's leading rusher, played just a few snaps in the first half because of a sprained ankle he suffered last week. Giles played most of the third quarter, though, breaking off a 70-yard run on third down from deep in Gaither territory that put the Cowboys in position for a go-ahead 40-yard field goal.
