Berkeley Prep loses a buzzer-beater in Kingdom of the Sun final
Berkeley Prep memorable run in the prestigious Kingdom of the Sun basketball tournament in Ocala ended in heartbreaking fashion Saturday night.
The Bucs tied the championship game at 62 when Austin Suarez banked in a 3-pointer with five seconds left. But Powder Springs (Ga.) star Trae Golden (36 points), the tourney MVP, nailed a trey at the buzzer to clinch the title.
Berkeley Prep (11-1) was led by Christian Reintgen (18 points), who was named to the All-Tournament team.
The Bucs, ranked No. 1 in the Times Hillsborough County Super Seven, had beaten Lakeland Kathleen, Eastside and Lakewood in a three-day stretch.
In the third-place game, Michael Morrison scored 18 points to spark Lakewood (13-1) past Ocala Vanguard 62-41. Spartans point guard Reggie Reed finished with 36 assists in the tournament, second-most in tournament history behind former er NBA player Sherman Douglas, who had 48 for Washington (D.C.) Spingran in 1984.
