Winter is 69th Guy Toph Award winner
Plant senior receiver Derek Winter was named the winner of the 69th Guy Toph Award, given each year to Hillsborough County's top football player, in a ceremony Thursday at the school district building.
Winter holds the county record for most catches in a season (90) and boasts career statistics of 192 overall receptions for 3,717 yards. He becomes the second straight Panther to win the award; former Plant star quarterback Robert Marve (now at Miami) was picked last year.
Winter, a Division I prospect who will visit Auburn this weekend and Iowa the following one, wasn't the only Panther honored on Thursday in the awards ceremony.
Senior offensive lineman Rhonne Sanderson, received the Jimbo Kynes Outstanding Lineman Award. Duncan Hock received the Ben Walker Outstanding Male Cross Country Runner Award. Meg Anderson received the Jessie Helfrich Hicks Award for Outstanding Female Swimmer. Duke-bound setter Kellie Catanach, the Florida Dairy Farmers Player of the Year winner, received the Kirkwood Family Volleyball Award.
The other recipients were: Berkeley Prep’s Jonathan Jordan, a Florida-bound swimmer, won the Jessie Helfrich Hicks Award for Outstanding Male Swimmer; East Bay’s Julie Rolfe (Casey Most Valuable Female Golfer); Wharton’s Kits Patel (Casey Most Valuable Male Golfer); and Wharton twin sisters Katrina and Kathia Skinner (co-winners of the Ben Walker Outstanding Female Cross Country Runner Award).
