Bay Area Batting Order: Softball rankings (Week 2)
Leadoff: Countryside (7-0)
Last week's ranking: 2nd
Last week's results: def. Sickles, 8-0; def. St. Petersburg, 12-0; def. Pinellas Park, 5-1
Cougars needed 12 innings -- and a mesmerizing pitching effort from freshman Alyssa Bache -- to defeat Pinellas Park.
2nd: Chamberlain (4-0)
Last week's ranking: 3rd
Last week's results: def. Hillsborough, 8-2; def. Leto, 18-0; def. Blake, 13-0
We don't see Chiefs getting a whiff of a challenge until a March 7 game against Plant
Three-hole: Pasco (6-0)
Last week's ranking: 4th
Last week's results: def. Hudson, 15-0; def. Lakeland McKeel, 5-4 (8 inns.); def. Hernando, 6-0
Pirates freshman Courtney Brandt tossed a no-hitter against Hernando, striking out 13 on 85 pitches
Cleanup: Mitchell (6-1)
Last week's ranking: 7th
Last week's results: def. Gaither, 7-4; def. Sickles, 2-0; def. Ridgewood, 12-1
Gaither fans are sure to point out ace Morgan Grove didn't pitch in the Cowboys' loss to Mitchell. The Mustangs can rightfully counter by pointing out catcher and FSU signee Courtney Stager (broken knuckle) didn't play at all.
5th: Tarpon Springs (5-1)
Last week's ranking: 5th
Last week's results: def. Clearwater, 16-0; def. Largo, 16-0
Spongers sophomore Danielle Labella (pronounced BASH-er) homered in both of last week's wins
Six-Hole: Gaither (3-1)
Last week's ranking: 1st
Last week's results: lost to Mitchell, 7-4; def. Alonso, 8-7
Last week's scores aren't quite as shaky as they appear. Cowboys ace Morgan Grove pitched only one total inning (striking out three).
7th: River Ridge (5-0)
Last week's ranking: NR
Last week's results: def. Ridgewood, 13-0; def. Central, 12-2; def. Gulf, 13-5
In five games, the Royal Knights have scored 74 runs, but we're still not certain if that's an indictment of their schedule strength or a testament to their offense.
8th Durant (7-2)
Last week's ranking: 8th
Last week's results: def. Plant City, 10-0; def. Sarasota, 1-0
Cougars ace and Plant City resident Sara Demuth, who already has two no-hitters this year,
appears bent on making her last prep appearance in her hometown -- at the Class 6A state tournament.
Nine-Hole: Plant (5-0)
Last week's ranking: NR
Last week's results: def. Jefferson, 14-2; def. Hillsborough, 10-0
Panthers have scored 59 runs in five games, making them South Tampa's most potent offensive force this side of Aaron Murray.
On the bench: Land O'Lakes (3-0), Nature Coast (6-1), Springstead (6-1), Pinellas Park (6-3), Palm Harbor University (5-3)
