Largo's Patrick wins 3-point shootout; Hayes second

Ben Patrick is the Class 5A 3-point shooting champ.

The 6-foot-2 sophomore guard defeated three other contestants Friday afternoon at The Lakeland Center to earn the title. He made 10 of 15 shots, including six straight at the end.

"I started thinking about my form on every shot," Patrick said. "When you're shooting, you don't even watch the balls go in. I was in a rhythm (toward the end) and I knew they were going in."

Bloomingdale guard Sean Hayes took second after making seven shots. He also got hot toward the end.

As the 5A champion, Patrick will compete again Saturday in the state's King-of-the-Hill shootout. Patrick and Hayes reached state by advancing through district and regional competition.

"I just want to win that one (Saturday)," Patrick said.
