Clearwater applicants named
The Times obtained the names of the coaching applicants for the Clearwater boys basetball position. Sixty-four applied, including 12 head coaches of programs in Florida. The applicants also came from 16 states.
As expected, Pinellas Park's Allen Carden and Palm Harbor Unviersity's Mike Walters applied. So did Clearwater assistant Jon Cabino and Largo assistant Mark Carter. East Lake's Joe Bloznalis did not apply.
Tyrhon Crawford, head coach at Orlando Evans, which is always a power in 6A, dropped out of the running.
Clearwater principal Keith Mastorides and athletic director Kathy Biddle will whittle down the list during next week's spring break. Biddle said they will start interviewing candidates within the next three weeks. Mastorides said he had not heard anything about Jack Coit returning to coach another season.

Anyone know anything about this Crawford guy from Orlando? Good thing Grasso isn't involved or he would hire a band director to save money by filling 2 spots with 1 person.
Posted by: | March 28, 2008 at 04:19 PM
Do we get to see the list or do we just have to guess the other 59 names you didn't show us?
Posted by: | March 28, 2008 at 04:21 PM
Crawford was suspended without pay this year just before the playoffs for being arrested over a domestic dispute. It is in the Orlando Sentinel... I hear he hasn't had the greatest track record with the law, but he is a good coach.

Carden Applied? That Is Pretty Upsetting, Especially for Pinellas Park Fans.
Posted by: | March 28, 2008 at 05:16 PM
Great report Putnam- who are the other applicants?
Posted by: ? | March 28, 2008 at 05:21 PM
i hear its carden--just like i said 3 weeks ago-and in a totally unrelated note--i hear cory carden suddenly has a big interest in the rotc magnet program.

To 5:16........Ya, something like that.
Posted by: RSPP | March 28, 2008 at 05:25 PM
who else? 18 states? 11 florida head coaches? WHO? BTW its Jon not Joe
Posted by: | March 28, 2008 at 05:34 PM
poor cabino does not have a chance against those names!
Posted by: | March 28, 2008 at 06:50 PM
No one likes Carden at Pinellas Park. That is why is he trying to leave.
Posted by: ppark teacher | March 28, 2008 at 06:59 PM
why didn't hill apply?
Posted by: | March 28, 2008 at 07:21 PM
i cant believe coach carden applied over all schools clearwater.. this lets me know that he dont care about any other of those palyers but him and his son who is 5"1 inches tall...
Posted by: | March 28, 2008 at 07:31 PM
i tlaked to like 3 players from ppark and they didnt have any idea that coach carden has applied.. they told be that was a rumor and coach would never leave them but then i told them to look this up here and their mad.. hahha good job carden at least u can tell ur boyzz ur leavin themmmm....

rotc is not a magnet
Posted by: | March 28, 2008 at 07:47 PM
This sucks! I heard Brian Peppers from the Toledo Boys Academy had applied. What a winner CHS would have had, their competition wide eyed at his coaching skill.
Posted by: Perry | March 28, 2008 at 08:26 PM
Why would Carden want to stay at Park They had a great year but there's nothing left. He is a outstanding coach who works hard with his players YEAR round. He would win at CHS with that talent pool.
Cabino will not have much chance with all these big names. He's a good coach who will get his chance but not at CHS.

where is perry lopez on this list hes the best baseball/basketball coach there is
Posted by: de donde | March 28, 2008 at 11:17 PM
This isn't Rocket Science. Carden wants to leave Pinellas Park because he knows he can't win next year with the lack of talent that is coming up. He took a look at who is coming back to Clearwater and who is coming back to Pinellas Park and it was a simple decision to make.
Posted by: | March 29, 2008 at 09:14 AM
Grasso is a softball coach turned into a AD..wow. Where is Weller.

Carden is an ego maniac who not even that good.

Posted by: RSPP | March 29, 2008 at 12:45 PM
Newsflash:
This just in Carden has been secretly named as the coach of Clearwater High.
Stated Biddle "I really have no clue in the area of sports or hiring the best candidate, I just thought it would be cute to have Coffin, Coit and Carden all C's here."
Carden could not be reached for comment as he was at a middle school recruiting.

mastorides is a band lover and drama queen he knows just a little less then cotey does about sports.

What is cardens record against good teams??? Largo 2-6---Clearwater 2-7 Record 4-13. Great coach??????
Posted by: | March 29, 2008 at 02:29 PM
do you guys really think carden is the ONLY coach who works with his players YEAR round. the fact that he is leaving ppark shows that coaches still need good talent to be good coaches.
Posted by: | March 29, 2008 at 03:11 PM
The Days of someone like Jack Wilson are over,no one stays committed to a program not even at Clearwater anymmore. Carden is leaving Pinellas Park because he knows his Cinderella run is over and he wants his baby boy to shine. His willingness to play judas in the same county against pinellas park says alot about his character. My suggestion to Ms. Biddle is to find a Coach that is Not a Judas. To Walters and Carden stay at Pinellas park and Palm harbor University Highschool and take your butt whoopings like good coaches should -stop bandwagon jumping and setting bad examples to kids that are stuck at your schools and actually tried to believe in you. They can't run and jump off the burning ship with you. P.S Coit and Bostic(football) wasted more talent then the law should allow over the years with nothing to show..
Posted by: ddm | March 29, 2008 at 03:38 PM
Carden is a perfect fit at clearwater he recruits and cheats better then coit could hope to, and thats exactly what the administration wants.

Cabino should resign is he does not get the job. The new coach should be able to appoint his own JV coach and assistants. It would be wrong to force the new coach to work with someone bitter over not getting the job.
Posted by: booster | March 29, 2008 at 06:02 PM
Perry Lopez coached the Clearwater Heatwave. He was one the greatest AAU coaches. Because of his coaching talent, these kids were able to compete at such a higher level on Clearwater's varsity.

hire travis jones ms biddle the guy can flat out coach
Posted by: ddm | March 29, 2008 at 09:29 PM
You know what? Cotey could probably find a good coach for Clearwater at a local middle school.
I mean, after all, doesn't he hang out at middle schools looking for feature stories on tall middle school students and put it on the front page of the sports section.
Application Deadline for new sports writer @ST. Pete Times is Monday @ 12 AM

Carden will be there for 10 years. Next son Cody then has his daughter play at the best basketball school for girls.
It's fuuny how the park peeps are turning on him already. Last month he was the greatest thing on earth. Now they say he cheates and is a bad coach. WELCOME to the Park.. This is why they suck in all sports

Should we put a tracking device on him? What is the matter with you people? The man is a high school basketball coach... he eats, sleeps, and takes care of his family just like every normal joe around our country. I understand that the next coach at CT is an important matter, however WE ARE TALKING ABOUT A GAME! Please get a grip and leave him alone. Why all the speculation from everyone? Let the interviewing process take place and relax. He is a good man, just back off.
Posted by: | April 01, 2008 at 11:49 PM
he is not a good man. that is why a tracking device might be a good idea. He is selfish and only cares about his win/loss record. He does not give a damn about his players, the school or the community. Clearwater's motto is tradition, honor and pride. This man will spit on Clearwater's traditions, only have pride in his son, and take all the honor for himself.
Posted by: Relax ??? | April 02, 2008 at 11:39 AM
Yeah he is not like Bostick. He is all about pride honor and the kids. The tradition of squandering more talent than any other school in the county if not the state. Clearwater had more talent than anyone this year in BB and ended up third in the county. Clearwater football has been pathetic forever. When Bostick did not give the job to Rodriquez like he promised he cursed Clearwter football. It is the Bostick curse. They will suck and be underacheiveing lazy undiscipled team until he retires.
Posted by: | April 04, 2008 at 09:05 AM
Yes 11:39, it is just a game and he is just a man who has passion for basketball. So, RELAX! Maybe he won't get the job and then you can go complain about someone or something else... since it seems that is what you CT people do best!
Posted by: | April 04, 2008 at 10:39 AM
Passion does not forgive how he treats students. They are people not nameless machines.
Posted by: relax? | April 04, 2008 at 10:41 AM
talking to people around the area it seems that carden might get hit with a recruiting violation, i expected this since he was texting students from my school to come play for him.
Posted by: | April 04, 2008 at 03:42 PM
HE has been trying to get the blonde kid from clw jv for two years
Posted by: | April 04, 2008 at 03:45 PM
Carden openly was recruiting Moody from Countryside for a long time,
he needs to be stopped.
Of course Bitdle at clearwater loves the coaches who cheat.
Posted by: | April 04, 2008 at 04:55 PM
she does a good job hiding things though so they don't get caught
thats what carden needs
Posted by: | April 04, 2008 at 05:14 PM
You people are SO NUTS! Truly, you have nothing better to do than bring down Carden. What has he done that has made all of you so crazy? It is truly amzing how much he has gotten under everyones skin. IT IS FUNNY, actually! He will have the last laugh. Hey all of you paranoid and jealous people, just RELAX!
Posted by: | April 04, 2008 at 08:06 PM
It's not that we're jealous of Carden.
If I were Jealous it would be of Danny Wright, Randy Schuman, or Phil Price. They repeatedly have good teams, not one season wonders.
I was speaking with several people at the All-Star game and heard that Carden counted his Pre-Season tournament wins as part of his record. I hoped that was a joke, but apparently not. Does he count any Pre-Season LOSES as part of the record? Does he count the Pre-Season stats as part of a player's stats for the year too?
I certainly wasn't impressed with his coaching this year. It reminded me of the coach Largo had before Price, Coach Taylor.
The coach wasn't all THAT good, he just had a great squad. That was the deal this year for the Park. The PLAYERS made that team a winner.
We'll see how this goes, but I hope Clearwater looks for a LONG TERM leader, not someone who will jump ship when his son graduates or his talent base slips. Like Carden is trying to do at P.Park
Posted by: Bball Fan | April 04, 2008 at 08:26 PM
Again, this blog is about all of the applicants for the CT job and all you can do is focus on Carden. If he is as BAD as you make him out to be... then why do you spend so much time focusing in on him.
Truthfully, he is too good a coach for Clearwater. You people are too CRAZY for him! I actually would counsel him not to coach Clearwater because you people will never be satisfied. You people are just fat and happy with your tradition and influx of talent.
Why don't some of you KNOW IT ALLS apply for the job? You all seem to be the authority on what CT needs as a coach and what they don't need.
And do you know why he had a great squad, Bball fan? Because three of those starters were with him since they were Freshmen and Cory has always been with him. Jake came along as a Junior, who got better as a result of Coach Carden. I wonder how good Jake would be if he had played for Osceola? I will let you ponder that one.
Posted by: | April 04, 2008 at 09:53 PM
How did Jake get to P.Park? Why don't you ponder that!!
Posted by: joe | April 04, 2008 at 10:16 PM
Ponder this you idiot, how did Pegg get to Clearwater.Nobody has though about that because he has done nothing for them.HE SUCKS!! Just because Jake was great for P Park you all bring him up.
Posted by: RSPP | April 04, 2008 at 11:26 PM
Jake got to P Park because Osceloa broke the rules. Go ask Jeremy Schiller he knows what happen.
Oh you CT supporters know that recruiting is your speciality. Justin Morin? Adam Pegg? Nick Nickerson coming from Texas? John Burke? Please! Get a Grip!
Posted by: | April 05, 2008 at 12:17 AM
How much BETTER would jake have been if he would have been with a REAL coach, like Wright, Schuman, Price, or even Coit? Carden did a good job, don't get me wrong. He just wasn't exceptional.
From the in-county applicants I would go with Walters (PHUH) or Carter (Largo)
There are many out-of-county applicants that make this an interesting pool.
Posted by: Bball Fan | April 05, 2008 at 09:02 AM
Bbal Fan, I dont Think You Know What your Talking about! Jake was the best Big Man Shooter in the county, one of the top in the state, he led the region in blocks and second in rebounding! I'm pretty sure he did just fine!
Posted by: | April 05, 2008 at 09:49 AM
HAHA Bball fan is as smart as bidtle..
with that list you don't even look at anyone in county.
Carte is a jv coach, his first job will be dunedin or Tarpon..
Travis Jones is the top candidate but I would hate to see him at Clearwater.
The admin has no clue about sports at clw, as long as you win they cover up the cheating.
Posted by: | April 05, 2008 at 09:56 AM
All Pinellas Park fans should be extremely upset on what Coach Carden has done. He has no loyalty to the school. He realizes he has no real talent next year so he is bailing out. I thought he was proud of what he built at Pineallas Park. I thought he was proud of the school spirit he had created. All he did was take advantage of having some good basketball players. This is not about the kids, the school or the fans, this is about Coach Carden. He cares only about himself, and his applying for the Clearwater job proves it. I am sure there were several years that Lakewood coach Wright had some less talented teams than the year before and he didn't bail. He hung in there and developed his talent and made them competitive. One the other hand, Coach Carden just jumps ship. He is not going to a school with better facilities. He is not going to a higher level of play or more competitive district. He is simply bailing out, so he can protect his image of being a good coach. There are some talented kids at Clearwater that he wants to surround his son Cory, so they can rebound all the three pointers he will miss next year. Wilcox should not allow this to happen.
Walters at Palm Harbor use to Coach at Clearwater and wants to go back. He has been in the county longer than Carden. He has been at Palm Harbor for 12 years and is looking for a change. Give the position to someone more deserving ... not someone who is jumping ship because all his talent is graduating.

only the players that won't play for coit want him.
Posted by: clw doesn't want carden | April 06, 2008 at 06:01 PM
the admin at clearwater is a laughing joke.
they say honor-pride-tradition but that is a joke to them.
they have no loyalty and should change their theme to power-corruption-gay pride.
To even make such a circus of this hiring is your problem.
power hungry fools running the school into the ground

Mrs. Biddle is a great person as the AD she cares about every athlete who plays for clearwater and all the time and effort she puts into the job i know they will fill the position with the best person possible. Because Clearwater is about Tradition, Honor, Pride!

What varsity experience does cabino have that warrants him getting such a high profile job?
Posted by: | April 07, 2008 at 11:58 AM
Cabino has put his time in at CHS. He should be the next coach. Great record with the JV program. CHS Booster
Posted by: | April 07, 2008 at 12:03 PM
Booster clubs are made by coaches, and can be disoved by a coach.
Boosters shoudl have no say in a coaching position. There job is to help the coach, not pick the coach.
This is one reason why Clearwater sucks, they empower useless groups. Then when their guy does not get hired, they get mad. This happened with baseball and will help again with basketball.
What varsity experience does cabino have that warrants him getting such a high profile job?

Cabino knows the program and the players better than anyone applying for the job!!!!! 64-5 record

Biddle is biased against minorities.
cabino should have a lawsuit after they hire carden.

Cabino needs to stop posting about himself.

Carden has not even had his interview yet....so keep foolin yourself. If I was Carden I would pull out of the runnin you CT people are NUTS! He is too good of a coach to have to deal with all of the CT CRAP. You people get talented players and have tradition, but lack the class that coach Carden has and needs.

Please tell us why he is such a great coach? he wins one year and he is great? take away cam and jake and he wins 10 games. he is a joke. his offense is terrible. umm cam jack it up and jesse and jake get the board. he called time outs vs the zones coit kept switching up, how do you not have a play for a 2-3 zone.
you are terrible carden, hope you get the job you will ruin clearwater

Calling this admin. a joke is a joke mastrodies cares about the students more than grasso ever did. If you're looking for power hungary thats grasso, all Grasso did was look out for himself and didn't give a crap about one student at clearwater. He was the worst man ever you could put in charge of athletics in the county. Mastrodies is the best thing what has happened to clearwater in a very long time.

Mastorides was not available for comment as he was at a band competition with his close freind Braum.

"hoop nut," is exactly right... NUT! Of course he doesn't win 10 games if he doesn't have Cam or Jake because in order to win lots of games you have to have GOOD PLAYERS! You people state the obvious all the time, yet you really have no clue about the nature of coaching. IF YOU DON'T HAVE GOOD PLAYERS IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO WIN! Simple as that!
Hey CT followers try this out... tell who ever becomes the new CT coach to sit Okaro, Reagan, and Sargent during very competitive games and see if they can beat the other teams. They probably won't win will they? Why? Because you need good players to win. This is not a difficult concept... good players means more victories. Please get this through your heads!

well all this talk about a new coach but i herd that Okaro, Reagan and aslo Sargent are goin to a different school.. is this true or what???

Why bash the administration? You people are not very nice or christian in your thoughts. Mastorides does a great job! We are happy with what he has done with Clearwater High. Give him and the administration a chance. They will do what is right for the school. If you are bashing the administration, your kid or you must have been suspended or got in trouble or have done something you should not have! Can we keep to the original blog? Basketball!

Stephenson from Coconut Creek is the best candidate. He has won at the 1a, 4a and 6a level in Broward. He plays a entertaining brand of basketball called "Extreme Basketball'
