Former Guy Toph winner joins Armwood staff
Keith Newman, a standout at Jefferson, the University of North Carolina and in the NFL, has joined the Armwood football staff as linebackers coach, Armwood coach Sean Callahan said Monday. Newman was on the Middleton staff last fall.
"He's a no-nonsense guy," Callahan said. "On top of all the little things, he had a great NFL career."
Newman, a linebacker, won the Guy Toph Award while at Jefferson in 1994. After a stellar college career, he played eight NFL seasons with Buffalo, Atlanta, Minnesota and Miami. In the NFL, he recorded 23 career sacks.
At Armwood, Newman will coach two of the region's best linebackers, Petey Smith and Casey Callahan. Smith has several dozen scholarship offers and Callahan also is a likely Division I-A recruit. Armwood defensive coordinator Matt Thompson, who had been coaching linebackers, now will concentrate solely on his role as coordinator.

Rumor has it Newman was supposed to coach @ Tampa Bay Tech . Probally for the best , his so called no nonsense attitude would have clashed with the great player coach chemistry @ Tech. Good luck and good ridence to him.
