It's baseball Blogapalooza!!!
Howdy there. Its region championship time, and here at Clearwater Central Catholic coach Todd Vaughan and Joe McLemore are shaking hands at home plate and going over the rules. Ryan Weber will start game onw for CCC.
It's 85 degrees here, but a whopping 178 degrees in the press box. It's like a sauna. I'm sitting here with only a towel wrapped around my waist.
We'll be getting reports from Brandon, Tampa, St. Petersburg, Dunedin and even Friday Night Rewind star Joey Knight will be checking in from lovely Palatka, wherever that is.
First pitches are just moments away.
****UPDATE****John Carroll decided to save their No. 1 pitcher for the second game, as opposed to throwing him against Weber, who hasn't lost since his sophomore season. Good move?*****

Weber throws three pitchers, all strikes, to open it up.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 04:05 PM
After striking out first batter, weber gave up two infield hits and hit a batter. With bases loaded, single up the middle scores one but CF Jimmy Dowdell throws out a runner at the plate. Next batter singles up middle again, scoring another. Dowdell overthrows catcher, but chases down ball and flips it to 2B Matt Morelli covering for third out. It's 2-0 John Carroll, and should be worse.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 04:12 PM
Weber chased ball down behind plate and flipped to Morelli, to be clear.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 04:14 PM
Pasco loaded bases in first inning with zero outs, but Dylan Giella lined out to short for a double play, and Dustin Brown whiffed. Palatka escapes.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 04:14 PM
From Joey Knight: The Azalea Bowl in Palatka, where Pasco is playing its 4A region finals series, may be one of the quirkiest in Florida. The warning track is on a distinct incline, meaning any outfielder who has to go back for a long fly is running uphill. Additionally, the light poles along the baselines are in front of the fence, meaning an infielder chasing after a high foul ball must look out for the poles or risk running smack into one. The bottoms of the poles, fortunately, are cushioned.
Posted by: Bryan Burns | May 09, 2008 at 04:17 PM
CCC has the bases juiced in bottom of the first. Cody Slaughter is up.
Posted by: Bryan Burns | May 09, 2008 at 04:19 PM
Great at-bat by Slaughter. Fouled off four pitches, then reached out and slapped one to the right-center gap. Ball tailed away from CF, went to the fence and scored three runs.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 04:22 PM
Well, John Carroll's decision to start the No. 2 looked great when the Rams got two off Weber in the top half of the first. But CCC gets three in bottom half and leads 3-2. (That was a 26-minute first inning, including a combined nine hits and five runs).
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 04:28 PM
Brandon got an RBI single by Roderick Shoulders, and they lead Winter Haven 1-0 in the bottom of the second.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 04:30 PM
Clint Warwick goes yard for Palatka to lead off the second inning, and they now lead Pasco 1-0.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 04:33 PM
what up with dun dun
Posted by: | May 09, 2008 at 04:34 PM
CCC just scored again -- perfect hit-and-run single bobbled by CF allowing Jimmy Dowdell to score. Now 4-2 CCC after two.
And Cambridge leads 3-1 in the top of the third against Bradenton Christian, thanks to a two-run double by Taylor Cabral, who eventually scored on a balk.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 04:39 PM
Dunedin trails 1-0 in the top of the second against North Port and the mighty Pinellas County Powerhouse Slayer Henry Manna.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 04:41 PM
That ball has a chance....it's deep....get up ball, GET...UP! Gone. James Ramsey hits a 2-run blast to RF and Brandon leads 3-0 in the top of 4th.
(That's right...I just did a HR call from a game I'm not even at)
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 04:48 PM
where's Tim L ????
Posted by: | May 09, 2008 at 04:53 PM
CCC extends its lead to 5-2 as Patrick Camporini singles up the middle to drive in Nick Leone. John Carroll is pretty shaky in the field.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 04:54 PM
Its 6-2 now, bottom of third, as Garrett Lopp drives in Camporini. The bottom four in the CCC lineup are 5-for-8 with five RBI and three runs scored.
John Carroll pitcher Dominic Laporte looks shot.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 04:57 PM
Tim L. is home developing a cure for cancer.
North Port is now ahead 2-0 over Dunedin, and Northside Christian leads 1-0. Both games are in the top of the 4th.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 04:58 PM
Celebrity sighting in Palatka!!!
Michelle McCool, a WWE Diva, is supposedly the cousin of Palatka coach Matt McCool. She is in attendance.
I'm on my way to Google images right now. Be right back.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 05:01 PM
I'm back, and while I was wandering the Internets, Fort Meade has tied Northside 1-1 after four innings (JoJo Hess is on the hill for the Mustangs)
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 05:06 PM
Brandon is a team of destiny, I think. The Eagles entered today with 14 straight wins, and now lead 6-0 after Eric Arce and Mike Smith drilled homers in the fourth inning.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 05:08 PM
I'm back. Had to run out to car and get tablet and chisel, since two laptops seem unable to do the job here from Clearwater.
Posted by: Bryan Burns | May 09, 2008 at 05:19 PM
Brandon hit its fourth homer of the day, as Matt Bennett's shot in the sixth makes it 7-3 in the Eagles favor.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 05:23 PM
John Carroll creeps a little closer here in the top of the fifth, with two doubles and three runs, all unearned thanks to a Ryan Weber error. It's 6-5, runner on second base, two outs.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 05:25 PM
It's tied 6-6. Weber gives up another hit, the fourth straight by the Rams after two were out.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 05:26 PM
Weber gets out of it, but only after four runs score. New pitcher coming in for John Carroll. If the Rams keep this up, with their No. 1 ready to go in the second game....
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 05:27 PM
Palatka has chased Pasco ace Aaron Brandt and leads 2-1 in the fifth. May be a quick hook by coach Ricky Giles (did the same thing last year in region championship game). Henry Johnson, who was most likely the game 3 starter if it went that far, is in.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 05:29 PM
Uh oh. Dunedin down 5-1 as Henry Manna strikes out the side in the bottom of the fifth inning. Max Kreuter, who started today 11-0, is still in the game for the Falcons.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 05:35 PM
Jimmy Dowdell just one-hopped off the fence in right-center, scoring two runs and the Marauders lead again 8-6 here in the bottom of the fifth.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 05:37 PM
Holy Cow! Winter Haven smacks a pair of 2-run homeruns off freshman reliever Chase Sparkman, and scores five runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 8-7 lead over Brandon.
Team of destiny? What moron said that?
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 05:41 PM
We have one winner -- Cambridge beats Bradenton Christian 3-2 in their series opener.
Northside Christian and Fort Meade have gone to extra innings, tied at 1-1.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 05:44 PM
If I may infringe on your blogosphere, Cotey, Pasco has batted around in the bottom of the sixth here in Palatka to take a 6-2 lead. The Pirates drew two bases-loaded walks, followed by Jake Schrader's two-run single and an RBI-single by Dylan Giella. Panthers starter Charlie Overturf, who was baffling the Pirates with a wicked breaking pitch earlier in the game, has been chased.
Posted by: Joey Knight | May 09, 2008 at 05:45 PM
Actually Tim L is at home licking his wounds from a LOSS ON THE MOUND to LAKEWOOD in prospect ball last night!
Posted by: | May 09, 2008 at 05:45 PM
Dunedin scores on Ryan Schneider's single and an error, getting two to pull within 5-3. Game is headed for top of 7.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 05:52 PM
CCC ahead 8-6 in top of 7th. Lead off hitter singles, steals second, clean-up hitter batting.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 05:56 PM
David Hall HOMERS. Fort Pierce John Carroll ties it up at 8-8 against CCC. Still no one out in the top of 7.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 05:58 PM
Alex McGathey singles, is bunted to second, goes to third on passed ball, scores as Fort Meade tries and fails to turn 2 to give Northside a thrilling 2-1 win in 8 innings. Tampa Bay is 2-0 on the day.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 06:00 PM
Pasco is three outs shy of winning Game 1 here in Palatka. To this point, the Pirates appear to possess more offensive depth. Pitchers look fairly equal, though Overturf's was among the best I've seen at the prep level in some time. He's believed to be headed to Daytona Beach CC. Entering bottom of 7th: Pasco 6, Palatka 2
Posted by: Joey Knight | May 09, 2008 at 06:00 PM
Weber has given up 13 hits, but has survived the 7th inning. It's 8-8 heading into the bottom of the inning, and CCC will send Camporini-Lopp-Dowdell to the plate against Kyle Kvies.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 06:02 PM
Camporini tries to bunt way on, it thrown out and is DOWN. He looks hurt. Jumped to the bag on a close play and landed hard.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 06:04 PM
Brandon IS a team of destiny. Mike Smith hits his second homer of the game (and Brandon's fifth) as the Eagles tie the game against Winter Haven at 8-8. Some pretty darned exciting games today.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 06:05 PM
is CCChoking? doesnt sound good
Posted by: jose | May 09, 2008 at 06:05 PM
Game 1 is over in Palatka: Pasco 6, Panthers 2. During the 30-minute intermission, I'm headed to perhaps the only high school concession stand in the nation where you can get fresh scallops.
Posted by: Joey Knight | May 09, 2008 at 06:06 PM
Camporini appears to be okay.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 06:06 PM
Still only one out here at CCC in bottom of seven.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 06:07 PM
Mmmmmm....scallops.
Two outs here at CCC.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 06:09 PM
tim L can drink an entire gallon of milk in thirty-seven seconds

Posted by: | May 09, 2008 at 06:10 PM
Aaaaaaaaaaand we're headed to extra innings here at CCC, where the score is 8-8.
Trevor Campbell is in to pitch for the Marauders. I've heard that Joe McLemore is starting the second game.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 06:11 PM
Campbell hits the No. 8 hitter to start the 8th.
Brandon WINS, scoring on an error in the bottom of the 8th inning. Tampa Bay now 3-0.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 06:14 PM
Rick Teasley bunted to second, then goes to third on Campbell's wild pitch.
Campbell strikes out leadoff hitter for second out, runner on third.
Posted by: Bryan Burns | May 09, 2008 at 06:15 PM
Campbell hits another batter (for the second time, he had two strikes on the batter he hit). Runners now on the corners with two out.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 06:18 PM
Clay Kollenbaum hit a one-out, two-run single in the bottom of the 7th to stun North Port. Wow. Tampa Bay is CRUISING!
Oh, and Campbell got out of the top of the 8th, so the Marauders coming to bat with the Killer Ms coming up: Morelli, Mende and McLemore.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 06:20 PM
Killer Ms? Did I really just right that?
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 06:21 PM
Shoulda been more clear -- Kollenbaum's single made a winner of Dunedin. 6-5 was the score.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 06:22 PM
Did I write "right" instead of write? Sheez...I'm blaming the heat and the distracting smell of hamburgers.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 06:24 PM
jose-
Have you ever left P. county? You do realize that John Carroll is highly respected in baseball since..ohhh..the 1980's? They are a solid team.
Posted by: Kibid | May 09, 2008 at 06:24 PM
tim L picked off kollenbaum
Posted by: | May 09, 2008 at 06:24 PM
John Carroll changes pitchers after Kvies hits Sam Mende with a pitch with one out.
Now pitching: T.J. Miles. This is the guy that is reportedly their ace.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 06:25 PM
Strike. Strike. Strike. Joe McLemore whiffs. Two outs, runner on 1st, Jeff Ijjas batting.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 06:27 PM
T.J. Mullins, not Miles, has good stuff. Breaking ball is excellent, fastball breaks in on right-handed hitters, his stuff moves. Kind of reminds me of a cross between Henry Manna and Ryan Webber, to be honest.
And he strikes out Ijjas as we head to the ninth, slaving away here in a baking pressbox in Clearwater while Joey Knight dines on scallops in Palatka.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 06:29 PM
David Hall, who tied the game in the top of the 7th with a 2-run homer off Weber, leads off for FPJC.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 06:30 PM
And Hall one-hops right off the 360 sign in the left-center gap for a lead-off double.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 06:31 PM
Campbell walks Mullins on four pitches. Looks like sophomore Dominic Delmonte is getting loose in the pen.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 06:33 PM
Bunt! Oops....throw to first pulls the second baseman off, so we now have bases loaded with NO OUTS. The only tiny shred of good news is the 7-8-9 hitters are coming up.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 06:34 PM
By shred, I meant little tiny tiny piece of barely discernible matter -- No. 7 hitter Trae Goodwynn singles and it's now 9-8 FPJC. Still no outs, still bases loaded. This could get real ugly.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 06:36 PM
Ophh, looks like John Carroll just came out and is putting it to CCC right now.
Looks like we'll find out if this was just a bad game by CCC, or if John Carroll is just the better team.
Posted by: Kibid | May 09, 2008 at 06:38 PM
Campbell hits a batter...but the batter is called back for not making an attempt to get out of the way. Next pitch is flied to center, scoring another run. But Dowdell makes a GREAT throw to 3B, nailing the runner. It's 10-8, two outs, top of 8.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 06:38 PM
Heading to bottom of 8. Joey Knight on second helping of scallops. Bob Putnam having filet mignon at Dunedin. Izzy Gould getting a massage and pedicure at Cambridge. Me, sweating for you. The things I do for love.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 06:40 PM
Bottom on 9, rather. Cody Slaughter leads off.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 06:40 PM
Mullins stuff is nasty.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 06:41 PM
Slaughter tries a head first slide, but he's still out on a grounder to second. Here comes Nick Leone.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 06:41 PM
Leone strikes out looking. Here comes Campbell.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 06:42 PM
Pasco senior righty Dustin Brown will start Game 2 against Palatka junior righty Brandon Lee (6-2). According to Lee's dad, seated right next to me in the press box, Lee has a fastball, change and slider.
Some Game 1 numbers:
Pasco SS Jake Schrader: 2-for-4, 2 RBI
Reliever Henry Johnson: 2.2 IP, 1 hit, 2 K, 1 BB
And with all respect to Cotey, because I also was sitting here sweating for you crazy bloggers, I missed out on the scallops. They're all out. The sausage dog and grilled onions, however, look downright sinful.
Posted by: | May 09, 2008 at 06:44 PM
Campbell waves at a curve ball. FPJC wins 10-8. CCC is the only team in Tampa Bay to lose, their ace gives up 13 hits, and FPJC can now come back with their ace, Mullins, who gets the win in game one striking out four of the five Marauders he faces.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 06:45 PM
Final word from CCC: After Dowdell doubled to give the Marauders an 8-6 lead in the fifth inning, the CCC batters went 0-for-14 with six strikeouts to finish NOT strong.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 06:47 PM
Talk amongst yourselves.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 06:48 PM
More celebrity sightings (well, sort of) here in Palatka: The Panthers have two kids named Bruce and Brandon Lee on their roster. They also have a backup named Dayne Taylor. Reverse the first and last names, and you've got Cotey's favorite '80s pop star. Sing it for us Cotey: "Tell it to my heaarrtt!!"
Posted by: Joey Knight | May 09, 2008 at 06:49 PM
Check that: There's only a Brandon Lee, no Bruce, on Palatka roster. But Dayne Taylor is here in person. C'mon, Cotey, belt it out once for your favorite '80s diva: "Prooove your love..."
Posted by: Joey Knight | May 09, 2008 at 06:56 PM
I'm now officially rooting for Palatka to force a third game tommorow so you have to spend the night there.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 06:58 PM
I had said it for awhile now to anybody that would listen that T.J Mullins would be, arguably, the best pitcher CCC had seen all season. He flew under the radar, because John Carroll isn't taken seriously since they play only with MCC in their district.
I still believe that CCC will come back and find a way to win this mini-series, but a few things have to happen.
1) Mullins doesn't give up a lot of hits. When Mullins starts, and JCHS loses, its usually 1-0, or 2-0 as a final.
2) Quit looking down on JCHS. I have a feeling that CCC thought this would be a walk in the park, obviously, its not. JCHS didn't come from Ft. Pierce to lay down and die.
Lets go CCC, wake up and bring it to them in game 2.
Posted by: Kibid | May 09, 2008 at 06:58 PM
Disastrous start for Pasco in Game 2. Dustin Brown, who struggled mightily against Nature Coast in the region semis, has exited after allowing two walks, a single and double. Chris Dious is on the hill for Pasco, which trails 3-0 with no out in the first.
Posted by: Joey Knight | May 09, 2008 at 07:01 PM
Can't a brutha grab a bite to eat?
Brandon got a two-run homer by James Ramsay (his second of the day) and a solo shot by Roderick Shoulders (his second of the day) to take a 3-0 after one in Brandon. I think that's like 32 homers that have been hit out there today.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 07:02 PM
Quick hook out there, Joey? I mean...seriously.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 07:03 PM
With one out in the top of the first, Pasco coach Ricky Giles already is making his second pitching change. Palatka has touched Dustin Brown and Chris Dious for six runs on four hits (including three doubles) and a pair of walks. Eric Dee now is warming up. Palatka 6, Pasco 0
Posted by: Joey Knight | May 09, 2008 at 07:09 PM
Northside Christian is already up 4-1 thanks to a pair of homers.
And how about the red-hot Clay Kollenbaum. Beats Plant in regional semifinals, hits a two-run single to win first game of regional championship, and NOW has hit a 3-run homer in the bottom of the first to give Dunedin a 3-0 lead in Game 2 (which he also happens to be pitching).
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 07:10 PM
I hope they have selections from Taylor Dayne on that jukebox at the truckstop you'll be sleeping at tonight, Joey.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 07:12 PM
The first-inning carnage isn't over. Palatka leads, 8-0, and Giles is making his third pitching change, going from Dee to Matt Gude. I think I understand Giles' strategy: This game appears lost, so maybe Giles has decided to yank Brown and Dee quickly so they can take another stab at Palatka in Game 3. ... And if I'm Panthers coach Matt McCool, I seriously consider getting No. 2 pitcher Brandon Lee out of this game as soon as possible (maybe after one inning) and starting him in Game 3.
Posted by: Joey Knight | May 09, 2008 at 07:17 PM
After one-half inning: Palatka 8, Pasco 0. Panthers send 14 hitters to the plate, collecting seven hits and pouncing on two errors. ... And for your information Cotey, as long as that truckstop lodge gets TVLand and VH1 Classic, I'll be quite comfortable, thank you.
Posted by: Joey Knight | May 09, 2008 at 07:23 PM
Northside Christian leads 5-1 going into the bottom on the third inning. JoJo Hess started on the mound for the Mustangs.
What's that you say? He started the FIRST game and went all 8 innings?
Well...he started Game 2 as well. Went two innings, and has now been removed.
Rumor is, his arm actually fell off on the way back to the dugout after the second inning. Fell right onto the first-base-line chalk. He stepped on it accidentally.
But seriously...10 innings? One day?
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 07:27 PM
Zach Olson is starting on the mound for CCC as Game 2 cranks up. The Marauders are the visitor, and Sam Mende just hit into a 6-3 double play to end the first.
Camporini is not playing. His injury is serioius enough that CCC probably won't be using him anymore, which takes a key left-handed arm out of the pen.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 07:30 PM
Kinda quiet here. I think everyone is nervous to see how Olson will handle the pitching duties. He just walked the first batter. Somewhere, a cricket wept.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 07:32 PM
Slowest...first inning....ever.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 07:38 PM
Olson walks two, picks off one, and retires David Hall (4-for-5, HR, 2B, 4 runs scored in the opener) to end the first.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 07:39 PM
The JoJo Hess-less Mustangs of Northside Christian are now tied with Fort Meade 5-5, as the Miners get four runs in the third inning, or the first inning that Hess hasn't been on the hill. (There's a 10-inning per day rule, by the way, or I'm pretty sure Hess would still be out there).
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 07:41 PM
T.J. Mullins is KILLING the CCC hitters with a sweeping curveball over the outside corner. One of the folks here in the pressbox has already said he's the best CCC has seen all season. So I say, bravo to you, Kibid.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 07:44 PM
CCC now 1 for its last 20.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 07:45 PM
Junior righty Henry Johnson, one of Pasco's three primary pitchers, has taken the mound for the second inning of Game 2. Johnson worked the last 2.1 innings of Game 1, meaning you're highly unlikely to see him on the mound Saturday, should a Game 3 be necessary. Our guess: Giles is going to give Dustin Brown another crack Saturday. ... In the bottom of the second: Palatka 9, Pasco 2
Posted by: Joey Knight | May 09, 2008 at 07:49 PM
Dunedin is pulling away. It's 5-0 in the third, as Ryan Schneider drove in two runs with a double.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 07:50 PM
WHATS UP WITH DUNEDIN?
Posted by: DUNEDIN? | May 09, 2008 at 07:51 PM
Go Falcons!
Posted by: Falconfever | May 09, 2008 at 07:52 PM
Thanks for the props Cotey. CCC is my team, I'm a huge Marauders fan; however, John Carroll has played Melbourne C.C 3 times this year. I live in Melbourne, so I asked a few of the baseball players that live next door to me to watch the "blog" of the game while eating some pizza.
So far, they've predicted about 90% of whats happened. One of the MCC players claimed that from what your typing, CCC sounds like they no longer feel they can win this game. Whats your take?
Posted by: Kibid | May 09, 2008 at 07:52 PM
Heading into bottom of third it's 0-0 at CCC. Mullins has faced the minimum through three innings (allowing one hit). Olson has allowed just a single.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 07:55 PM
I don't know if they don't think they can win, but they do appear a little listless. Shocked almost. They need something to get them going, like a double or something to fire everyone up.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 07:57 PM
how is roger's doing?
Posted by: | May 09, 2008 at 07:57 PM
My question is, since Weber had allowed six runs and 11 hits going into the last inning, should CCC have gone to McLemore or someone else to close out that 8-6 lead?
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 07:58 PM
Hey 7:57 -- It's been the Clay Kollenbaum and Ryan Schneider Show out at Dunedin today, from what I'm told.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 08:00 PM
Hindsight being 20-20, yeah, they most likely should of. At the time though, tough call.
I think its a gamble that CCC didn't go to McLemore for game #2 personally; however, if CCC can steal this game from JCHS, then McLemore could be ready for game 3 which would be huge.
I hear after Mullins, and the guy that started game #1, JCHS doesn't have much in reserves. But, we shall see.

Oh boy. With two outs, Colton Griffin and Shane McCain singled. Then David Hall crushed one to the base of the fence, and it's now 2-0 FPJC. Not good for CCC. Not good at all. Hall has been brutal, with five hits, two doubles, a homer, four runs scored and four RBI.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 08:06 PM
It's 2-0 after three innings, and CCC's season is slip, slip, slipping away.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 08:07 PM
Doesn't look like FPJC is going to need to go to anyone besides Mullins. This will be a crucial inning, with top of lineup coming up. Personally, I think it's now or never, just for the mental health of the Marauders.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 08:08 PM
Cambridge won 3-1, and they are the first of the local boys to move onto state.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 08:09 PM
I agree, its the 4th inning, CCC has to, at the very least, get a run on the board.
Posted by: Kibid | May 09, 2008 at 08:10 PM
Break for CCC? Runner on first, one out, and Mende bounces one back through thye box. Pitcher deflects it, and Matt Morelli rolls into third base with Mende on the other corner. One out. McLemore, who just swung wildly and missed at first pitch, is up.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 08:13 PM
Mende takes second. McLemore pops up to first base. That hurts CCC. Jeff Ijjas is up, runners on second and third.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 08:14 PM
Give us a Dunedin update!
Posted by: Burt | May 09, 2008 at 08:14 PM
Ijjas grounds out.
Ouch.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 08:15 PM
Dunedin leads 8-0 in the top of 4.
Jamison Sweat has two doubles, Ryan Schneider has a double, Clay Kollenbaum has a homer, North Port has no pitching left.
Posted by: Bryan Burns | May 09, 2008 at 08:17 PM
Sheebus! Kollenbaum just hit his second homer of the day, and it's now 10-0 Dunedin. Looks like a five-inning mercy rule win is on the Falcon menu.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 08:19 PM
I should have said second homerun of the GAME.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 08:23 PM
FPJC gets two runners on, but strands both in the top of 4th. Looks like they are on Olson's stuff, though, and with 2-3-4 coming up next inning I'd be ready with another arm. Maybe they could send a coach to go pick up JoJo Hess? Is the rule 10 innings in one day IN ONE CITY? Cuz, well....you know...
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 08:26 PM
Mullins has now baffled CCC for seven straight innings (including the two to end last game). It is eerily reminiscent of Henry Manna's game against Seminole. He's not overpowering, but he is placing his curveball where ever he wants it, throwing it in any count, and just confusing CCC's lineup. Still 2-0 in the bottom of the 5th.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 08:34 PM
Olson strikes out Mullins for third time. End of five, it's 2-0.
CCC is sending Garrett Lopp, James Dowdell and Matt Morelli to the plate in the sixth.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 08:38 PM
Northside Christian and Fort Meade are tied 6-6 in the bottom of six. Word from there is the Mustangs just sent JoJo Hess' arm to the plate to bat. Weird stuff going on.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 08:40 PM
A rabbit just ran across the outfield. Lopp struck out on the very next pitch. Just saying. The Cubs have their goat, and CCC has it's rabbit.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 08:41 PM
Bottom fifth: Palatka 10, Pasco 4. Henry Johnson worked 3.1 innings for the Pirates, giving him 5.2 for the day. We're guessing if this series goes to Saturday -- which it appears it will -- Pirates coach Ricky Giles will roll the dice and give struggling ace Dustin Brown another chance. Brown didn't record an out in this game, and was chased with no out in the second of his previous start.

Dowdell whiffs.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 08:42 PM
what about dunidin game?
Posted by: | May 09, 2008 at 08:43 PM
Morelli whiffs.
End of inning.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 08:44 PM
Dunedin is up 10-0
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 08:44 PM
Northside is in extras AGAIN....it's 6-6 in the bottom of the 8th.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 08:51 PM
Heading into top of 7th, it's Mende, McLemore and Ijjas for CCC. This is it.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 08:52 PM
Mende whiffs. Curveball.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 08:54 PM
McLemore whiffs. Tried to hold up. Curveball.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 08:55 PM
Ijjas pops up. Game over. CCC loses 2-0 to John Carroll.
Mullins: 9 IP, 14 Ks, 2 hits allowed, two wins.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 08:56 PM
Congrats to Ft. Pierce John Carroll for winning the regional championship sweeping CCC in Clearwater. Best wishes to the Golden Ram baseball program as they advance to the final 4.
Thanks Cotey for giving us all the updates to the game this evening. And congrats to CCC for another fine season, finishing 26-4.
Posted by: Kibid | May 09, 2008 at 08:59 PM
whats up?
Posted by: dunedin? | May 09, 2008 at 09:03 PM
Cotey,
Do you have an update on the Dunedin game? Thanks.
Posted by: Falconfever | May 09, 2008 at 09:07 PM
Dunedin wins 12-0, headed to state. Joins Cambridge.
Northside loses 7-6 in 8 innings, so it's Game 3 tommorow.
CCC is two-and-out.
Brandon...Brandon....Ed?
Pasco gets to spend Saturday in lovely Palatka after dropping second game.
Posted by: Cotey | May 09, 2008 at 09:28 PM
Thanks for the updates. Dunedin has recovered nicely after a late season skid, maybe that was good to get a few losses out of the way before making the run to State.
Posted by: Falconfever | May 09, 2008 at 09:55 PM
i heard tim l was the best pitcher on planet earth............ NOT!!!
Posted by: | May 09, 2008 at 10:19 PM
it appears dunedin is the best team in pinellas county. seminole and ccc stop hating just cause u wanna be us!!! we may have 6 losses, but i think were undefeated in the playoffs and goin to sarasota. have fun hearing how we win our rings

Just finished chasing all the home runs balls at Don Powell Field. Those trees beyond the outfield fences are going to need some care because they got abused by some baseballs tonight. The Eagles won 9-8 and 10-6. The teams combined for 13 -- yes, 13 -- home runs in the two games. Catcher Mike Smith, first baseman Roderick Shoulders and centerfielder James Ramsay each hit two homers for the Eagles.

Hess threw 110 pitches in 10 inn.

Posted by: ed strohmayer | May 10, 2008 at 01:35 AM
Good luck Falcons! Great group of men heading to Sarasota... Ed Strohmayer, I'll pick you up... CCC's run is a memory and so hard to understand how Mr Cotey could write the end of his print story by saying the "Marauders lost their will to win"... this guy's the worst High School sports writer the St Pete Times has ever employed ... whatever happened to Wayne McKnight?
Posted by: malone | May 11, 2008 at 08:49 AM
Wayne Mcknight is too busy screwing up his Coaches at Tapron Springs. Just ask Coach Gena.
Posted by: | May 11, 2008 at 10:40 AM
Webber is glad it is over. His season begins June 5.
Posted by: Scout | May 12, 2008 at 10:02 AM
Weber or the scout ???? Unless you talk to Weber - his season starts June 28 at UF - what the hell are you talking about-- All the scouts know that Weber is spelled with one B
Posted by: | May 12, 2008 at 01:45 PM
Weber along with some other great recruits will be at UF soon - then it's the CWS! What a recruiting job that new coach has done! Is anyone from Dunedin going there?? Not! GO GATORS!
Posted by: | May 12, 2008 at 04:46 PM
hope nobody from John Carroll is playing in the SEC
Posted by: Gator Fan | May 12, 2008 at 11:29 PM
actually jacob rogers could have went to uf but chose ucf. nice try tho and weber will get hit hard in college
Posted by: | May 12, 2008 at 11:44 PM

Posted by: | May 13, 2008 at 01:17 PM
just wish weber the best- he played his heart out every game- now you all are talking like this because why? He has options- what is wrong with that? I have enjoyed watching him pitch since he was ten years old- I wish him the best!
