SPC baseball coach steps down

St. Petersburg Catholic baseball coach Charlie Guastella has resigned after seven seasons, according to AD John Gerdes.

“I have deep appreciation for the commitment and loyalty Coach Guastella has provided at St. Petersburg Catholic,” Gerdes said in an e-mail. “He leaves our program in good shape and he has provided me with some sound advice on how we can improve the program further. His contributions to St. Petersburg Catholic High School should be applauded.”

Guastella went 101-80 at SPC, including a 12-13 mark this season.

Wow, 4 days later and no love for Charlie?

Still no love?

I heard there are 2 more south county baseball jobs coming open. 1 in fall and 1 at Christmas, before the season starts. No one wants to keep these jobs it looks like

Hire parents, they seem to be the ones who know all about baseball.

No kidding about the parents. Legit coaches are quitting left and right and passing on these job so the little league dads who never played past T-ball, but watch on TV and read books on strategy can take over. Then people wonder why teams have no fundamental skills.

Well said.

How about the assistant coach for the last five years...considered one of best high school coaches in New York State history..he fought through cancer to be out there each year with Baron baseball and no mention...wow what a shame.

Give coach Charlie credit for keeping players to be part of a team who could not play...certainly parents didn't understand that a led to attacks Charlie never deserved.

Looked at the facility at ST. Pete Catholic lately grass higher and higher..we think they will miss Charlie.

Charlie beat CCC,Tc,Jesuit in his tenure and played an all out schedule against the best competition in Florida...and would you think all without violating a rule or recruiting...many players sent on to major schools...thank you Charlie and coach Yanno.

clean your act up let coaches coach and parents be what they should spectators...

5:13 If only that we acheiveable in today's time in dealing with parents.

The parents will be begging for Charlie to come back after they see some of the things that this new coach will do. Sometimes people think the grass is greener on the other side of the tracks, they will see that is so far from the truth in this case. The new coach is a very knowledgeable baseball man, but will run a brutally tough program at SPC.Some area people are betting that players will be campaigning for Charlie to come back by the middle of the season.
