Ex-Ram Servidio signs with Mets
Former Ridgewood and Barry University standout John Servidio, selected in the 26th round by the New York Mets in last week's Major League Baseball draft, confirmed Thursday he has signed with the club.
Servidio signed Tuesday for what he he said was "nothing worth mentioning," and reports Saturday to the Mets' short-season single-A affiliate in Brooklyn. He said he's projected as a corner outfielder, the position he played throughout high school and college.
Being drafted in a middle round "was about what I expected," said Servidio, a second-team all-South Region pick who hit .366 with 14 home runs as a senior. "I'm a senior in college, I wasn't expecting to go early. It couldn't have gone any better."
A sophomore on the 2002 Ridgewood club that reached the state title game, Servidio watched the draft from his Port Richey home and worked out with Ridgewood coach Larry Beets on the Rams' field over the weekend.
"My mom actually saw my name come up (on the TV screen)," Servidio said. "I found out I got drafted by her screaming."
