Carden will not be investigated

Jim Lott, an official with Pinellas County's Office of Professional Standards, said his department is not investigating Clearwater boys basketball coach Allen Carden regarding allegations of improper use of booster club funds stemming from Carden's previous coaching job at Pinellas Park.

"We felt there was nothing to look into after talking with Pinellas Park principal John Johnston," Lott said.

Johnston said he was confident "there was no theft or anything illegal" with the booster club funds before Carden left Pinellas Park to take the boys basketball coach at Clearwater.

It depends on what the money was used for. First, Carden raised the money so it was his discretion to use it as he saw fit(T-Shirts, etc.) However, if he used it for AAU or USSSA stuff, then that is wrong. I do think the race thing is an issue. To bad the Times don't push these issues further.......they could be much more hard hitting than they are.

Cotey needs to talk to the principal and ask about conession money before someone goes to the school board and really stirs if up for the principal. Dont want bad press with Wilcox's replacement coming in soon. Maybe he can explain it away but doesnt he need to explain where the money went?

Teachers and coaches are NOT allowed to raise money in their school and have a separate account outside the school system. All money has to go through the bookkeeper or a FHSAA sanctioned booster club. The question should be, what account did Coach Carden put the money in that he raised from the concession stand and his X-mas tournament ticket money? It seems that Mr.Lott and John Cotey need to look into the facts.

There was finally a coach that truly cared about his team and wanted them to be successful. Coach Carden put every dime from summer camp money into his team, while many other coaches put the money into their pockets. Pinellas Park didn't have any money when he came, but he worked hard to build a program and raise his own money for the kids. At least he had enough class not to start pointing fingers at the previous coach for not leaving any money in the program. He also gave tremendous support to his wife during her cancer surgeries, which she is still going through. What a horrible person he is!?

Probably not but where there's smoke, there's typically fire. Smoke has followed this man. He can't seem to avoid it and that's usually an indicator of a problem.

Seems a good bet that the next thing Carden does that may be a little shady will have a giant light shone on it by you folks in here. So, he should act cautiously with the knowledge that he is being watched.

What agency audits schools? They should be alerted.

A school based audit would not pick up on any money that was raised at Pinellas Park concession stand. The reason, no money went through the books at the school. There was no sanctioned booster club,so the auditors have no records to check. That is the reason why having an outside account is illegal. EXCEPT AT PINELLAS PARK!!!! The school board needs to check into this or every teacher and coach will be putting school funds into their own accounts.

What is going on at Pinellas Park? Why would they allow this to occur, it seems like the parents of the basketball team should start to ask some questions. The money that was raised from the concession stand was for the Pinellas Park team not for the basketball coach.

How can Pinellas County School Board not look into why one coach can have an illegal account. Many questions need to be answered. Maybe they need to ask Gibbs High School what the rules are about private accounts for coaches.
