FHSAA penalizes Nature Coast/South Lake

Five football players have been suspended indefinitely for their roles in a benches-clearing brawl during Nature Coast's 40-24 win Friday night at Groveland South Lake.

In addition, Nature Coast coach Jamie Joyner has been suspended six weeks for gross unsportsmanlike conduct and the school fined $100. Joyner also must take a class before he is reinstated and is prohibited from being on site at any of the Sharks' remaining football games.

The Times obtained a copy of the Florida High School Athletic Association's preliminary report Monday afternoon, which cited Joyner and one unidentified Nature Coast student-athlete for "throwing punches."
If the punishment is served, Joyner's suspension would end Dec. 19 - the day of the Class 3A state title game.

Joyner declined comment Monday afternoon, but said previously he was struck in the head with a helmet and suffered a black eye. When reached prior to Joyner's announced suspension, Nature Coast athletic director Travis Lamle said, "I would guess if a decision came down that was devistating we would appeal."

Lamle would not identify the Nature Coast student-athlete suspended, but said administrators asked those at the game to write down their account of the incident to present to the FHSAA.
None of the student-athletes were named because they are minors, FHSAA spokeswoman Cristina Alvarez said.

According to the report there was 3 minutes, 45 seconds remaining when the power went out on the football field. Visibility was limited to "5-10 feet maximum."

Head official Michael Koller from the Central Florida Officials Association said in his report, "We could then hear players beginning to hit each other. Both benches cleared and numerous players for each side began fighting. Visibility was still limited until a vehicle turned their headlights on about a minute later."

Officials held a meeting at midfield and decided to call the game. They also identified the five players and coach they "are confident threw punches during the brawl."

Joyner denied throwing punches, the report said.

"...however, the official that observed the coach's actions was less than 5 feet from the coach and confident of what he saw."

karen you obviously don't know the baker family

why would you post a comment jj everytime you open your mouth you embarss yourself cussing like that your parents must be proud

10:13 is right. As far as playoffs, FHSAA is not going to risk NCT getting in another fight this weekend with Williston and have some kid get seriously injured in another brawl and FHSAA get sued for being negligent letting NCT play while all this nonsense is still hanging. Plus, there are a lot of other reasons for not allowing NCT playing most reasonable folks can figure out on their own.

2:46 PM====nct is playing the role of the victim. you don't want to be held responsible for your actions. answer these questions: yes or no? hasn't your family been involved in two fights on the football field in the past year? yes. isn't your school already on probation? yes. don't take the high road and spout off some nonsense about the other school started it. perhaps they did but by your own admission your school was involved in the fight on that night. why should you not receive a harsh penalty? instead of being angry at others judging you why not be angry at your family members who have tarnished your image. you guys know who was acting stupid that night. coach get rid of the trash and do it publicly so the fhsaa can see that you are a solid program and not the thugs people now perceive you to be because of fights and arrests.

NCT is not playing victim. Both schools participated in the fight, and both teams got hurt. South Lakes players went to the hospital and NCT's coach got suspended. But you don't see people calling South Lake a bunch of thugs do you? So don't think the playing field is even. Nobody is bashing your schools reputation. And being a technical school has nothing to do with it. If we think we are better, its because we believe our programs at NCT are better. And nobody ever said that the Eagles were trash, so get off you high horse and stop TRYING to be the victim. And our football team isn't a gang either. We don't need people getting the impression that NCT is the Crips or something.

All of you NCT nuts need to take a step back. Did you know that Walter Banks, the South Lake head coach, was also hit? Did you know that 2 South Lake players went to the hospital? That's right, one player was gang kicked and wound up with cracked ribs and internal bleeding. The South Lake Eagles are not trash, even if we don't have a great record. They are fine young men coached by an even greater leader, Coach Banks. Get over your fancy technocal school selves and stop playing victim. Go respect, Go Eagles!

STOP MAKING EXCUSES FOR CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR!

Just wait until the videos get to the press. There are TONS of pictures and miles of video shot by lot of people in the stands and by the teams themselves.

This is going to be better than one of those world's dumbest criminals shows.

Thug Playaz with names and numbers all over themselves committing felony assaults on TV!

Oh no they were set up! They're VICTIMS!

ROT IN JAIL ALL OF YOU!
ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!! HAHHAHAHAHAHAHA!

OH MY GOD VIC PLEASE GET OVER YOURSELF! THESE GUYS ARE CRIMINALS PURE AND SIMPLE!

Instead of making excuses for these criminals and telling us to put ourselves in there poor little scared shoes why don't you yourself in the position of a person getting assaulted with a football helmet?

I guarantee you won't be talking so much garbage!

Is Vic NCT's football team psychologist?

What are you talking about?

High school boys are in that development stage of their lives that will deploy chemistry within the body in preparing them for instinctive survival, we at times call it an adrenaline rush, provoking instances of fear, fight or flight.
The sensations of this physiological pattern kick in at the most threatening moments of activities. We often see this stage of sensation in our young men in combat, performing task that are at times heroic and at other times suicidal.

When these boys were playing football as toddlers they felt the pain of bodies impacting. At this stage it was mostly fear or flight that was felt. This is nature’s way of preserving a young body that is not very capable of defending itself with a confrontational response. As these young bodies gain mass, they also gain experience with pain. They learn to manage it, also using it as a tool of defense or intimidation by inflicting it upon the opposition.

The complexities of how this tool is used in a sporting scenario will be influenced by a large grouping of factors, these relate to very personal surroundings, not all of which are in the control of development.

Having said that, lets jump into any player’s shoes for a moment.

(thoughts)
“ Man he shoved is elbow on my throat as he got up, not fair”
“ Hey ref: did you see this guy pull my head around by the face mask?)
“ Come on get that knee off of my gut, your killing me”
“ That bumping into me was meant to show me he thinks I’m scared”

Each time that event or pain kicks in, the defense and survival plan will build up and sences sharpen.
In combat you are not very willing to kill until you are in a situation of kill or be killed. In a football event you are not ready to fight until you fall victim to reality (be it perceived or not) remember that reality is also a function of perception which can be miles from truth. Your body is now ARMED AND READY.

The lights go out, the ball is passed on to the QB, and the collisions commence. Just like all the previous collisions except that in semi seclusion of darkness confusion sets in. The collision of bodies continues with no apparent logic or reason, so perception kicks in and we now go on to the survival mode. Fear or flight is not an option at this close proximity, survival for some of us will be triggered and for others it becomes suicidal emotions at all cost. This whole scenario is very disappointing but very normal for young men. As years bring on additional experiences, we gain physiological strength and control which is then more apparent. Notice that in College football there are confrontational scenarios to a lesser degree, and still further up the road in pro football there are even less combat scenarios. We mature, we reason, at the end of our road we often wish we knew then what we now know.

All of these boys have parents that are proud of them and place them in the highest pedestal, you know yours and they know theirs. You love yours and they love theirs. We all seem to have that in common until someone points to our side and places blame, then we join one side or the other. Not a good thing, but very normal.

The coaches are human too, they have emotions and instincts as we all do. But really, they give so much to the young group of men that they train. They become the friend, father, mother and at times the foe to our kids.

In the mind of all coaches are emotions of pride often followed by disappointment as play by play scenarios evolve. They see a ball fumbled and pull their hair, they see their QB get sacked and the agony of pain sinks deep in their heart, as it does in ours if it is our team. They feel what we as parents feel for our children or feel for the team. But when you are the coach in charge the weight is really on your shoulders.

We know the lights went out. We know the ball was passed on to the QB. We know that visibility was more than ten miles. We know that there was confusion. We know that there was plenty of tension. And best of all we know that our kids or coaches are not instinctive killers. These folks will carry this experience on for the rest of their lives. Often times they will tell their children or grand kids of this event with a shy smile across their face.

We are all blessed to live in the greatest nation. By enlarge we have the best schools of any place on earth. God has given us healthy children to enjoy the sports that hone our development of reason and skill.
And he has also provided us with individuals that offer themselves to assist.

I too played football and felt the emotions of fear, flight and fight and today I often ask myself “man what was you thinking”

There are no losers here, if there was malice may we learn from this. We all bought an experience. This one tiny chapter in our lives is over, let us all learn from it and move on.

I'm glad my tax dollars go to NCT. What an excellent program. At our other schools they could care less about our kids. At Springstead if you play a sport (wrestle) you get special treatment. You can treat other kids however you want and the deputy there acts like he's part of the wrestling team. They can do no wrong. Pathetic I so go NCT all you kids know what you want and go for it

Hope your proud "just another student at NCT"
Your coach put the "THUG" into Thuglife"
Your players are hardened criminals who should be in prison right now.
You have lied, cheated, recruited your way to a 9-0 record. ANd now, its time to pay the piper...
KARMA IS A _____ (what your mom is)

Firstly, I would like to say that the majority of you are handling this very immaturely. It's HIGH SCHOOL football. I love football too, but seriously people, get a life. Or at least a better one.

Secondly, I will come right out and say that I am a student at Nature Coast Technical High School, but I rarely attend the football games and did not attend the one against South Lake. So you can call me biased all you want but you would be wrong in saying so.

Although NCT has its bad points, I would go there any day compared to the other Hernando County schools. I am very impressed with all the programs at NCT, not just football of athletics. Our culinary program has proven its title as best in the county with dozens of catering jobs a year, and a wonderful student run restaurant. Our IT program keeps up a very appealing website that is accessible to anyone who wants to take a look. Our SGA is the most invovled with our school, and the community, in the county. Raising money for groups like Relay 4 Life and a couple more like it. And when they tried to contact the other school for their support in a fundraiser for a charity in need, they didn't get one response back from SHS's, HHS's, or CHS's SGAs.

So you can talk about how we're just sports focused, but these programs along with all the others at NCT make a difference to our community. And I can assure you that your tax dollars are not being wasted.

Now as for the athletics department, I think it speaks for itself. We range from losing seasons to state champs. Do we love our coaches 24/7? Truthfully, no. But neither does any other school in the COUNTRY. But do I believe that we have some of the most dedicated, loving, hard-working coaches that I have ever seen? 100% YES. I also believe that they also always have the best intentions, no matter what their actions are. And I know this from experience.

Concerning the last friday: I don't believe that Coach Joyner would ever punch a kid in the face. I do believe that both teams players would though. Luckily, both Tizzy and Joyner went today to repeal the actions taken against both our coach and our one player. Unluckily, we can't repeal the game taken away from us this week. I believe that everything will work out to the best in the end, or at least I hope it will.

Oh, and concerning the statement that Nature Coast is the black eye of Hernando County. HOW DARE YOU! That is just a sign of pure disrespect! You really think that you are that much better than us? I'm truely disgusted at that comment. When I am successful one day due to my education at NCT, I will look back and have pity for all those who doubted all of us at NCT. Have a nice life. You should be ashamed.

Here ya go 4:15 ; The game film reflects that the play was not over when the lights went out, it took a full 3 seconds for the whistles to blow. The sack of your player was nothing more than a continuation of the play, with the tackler being less than 5' from your QB/player when the field went dark.

even though they were LOSING[learn how to spell..] nct started it all by throwing down our qb AFTER the lights went off AND the qb was yelling at the kid,"play's dead! plays dead!" but of course nct had to start **** again..

Man, another great post with some sense. You smart people only come on late I guess. The main question is: What made the ref's call it a bench clearing brawl? How did they come up with that? The South Lake team came to the Nature Coast sideline! The coaches sent the NCT players across the track to the fence! South Lake parents were even upset that their own coaches let them make it all the way across the field like that.
The Ref's were seriously mistaken.

Look at this quote also:
-Rob Fairbanks, father of South Lake quarterback Dylan Fairbanks, described the game as a "very physical, hard-fought game" but nothing out of the ordinary until the field went dark.
-So, that throws out anyone playing dirty prior. And add this for interest.
-Last year, South Lake lost to Nature Coast 33-20. Explaining the players' emotions, Fairbanks said, "They [Nature Coast] were hyped up for [going] 9 and 0 and we were hyped up for pride."
The QB's Dad seems very understanding. It is Football people.

Got that from: http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/lake/orl-brawl1208nov12,0,4666945.story

At the same token in the mist of the rage and incitement you need to point the blame on to someone, I feel like they didn't have one student from NCT to point the blame on to so they pointed the blame on Nature Coasts beloved Coach. You really have to ask your self is this truly fair? I'm sorry I'll think from both sides of the field on this one. The refs said you could only view 5-10 feet. You honestly have to ask the ref if he is certain thaat he saw Jamie Joyner not another student, or maybe the real question is. Is it possible that it could be another student, is it possible that it was dark and that could have altered the view of what he saw. Is it possible that Joyner grabbed a students pads and flung him to the floor like you've seen in the CHS vs NCT video back in 07. If there is any doubt then with out a doubt with out any other video then Jamie is fine. How the hell can you take one ref's word on such a dramatic incident. If you ask me, I say no one should be held responsible, every student on both sides were fighting. I don't care if it was Nature Coast or South Lake. Thus being said which ever team started the fight should be banned from the rest of the season. You fight as team, you win as a team, you lose as team. If one player starts the brawl you all pay for it. You are a team, you don't let one player go down for the rap. A team sticks by their team-mates no matter what. So the way that I see it is like this, they're only going by what the ref has said. What about what the players have to say there is a bunch more players then refs. How ever what player will say there coach is guilty. But since there isn't any real proof he did do it I guess he beat the system since the lights did go out and both schools did fight, every play did. Joyner has been through this twice now. I highly doubt he'd want to risk everything he worked for over a dumb fight. Considering Nature Coast dominated South Lake. Seems to me that South Lake had more of a reason to fight then Nature Coast. Nature Coast was at the gloating stage, South Lake was in the pouting stage.

GODY AND NAPLES... GODBY AND NAPLES...SERIOUSLY! Man getting a little head of ourselves are we! Naples is in a class of their own, I have seen them play twice in the past year, they are honestly like a small college team. Beat Williston first before you go out calling out the big dogs!

806 let me guess teams like armwood, st thomas, etc?

However teams of our own caliber in 3a such as godby and naples i'd say we would win.

Listen, all you haters are on NCTs d**k so much im surprised you can even walk. All im saying is if your a central supporter be a central supporter and support your team, if your a springstead supporter be a springstead supporter, if your a Hernando supporter then......just kill yourself. Just playing, but seriously hop off NCTs d**k and worry about your own pathetic team.

Oh and whoever posted the thing about JJ, this is him, and im glad to know i have a little groupy and they should really come meet me since they talk about me like they know me.

The sharks are big fish in the small tank of Hernando county. Extraordinary, elite, all-star athletes? There are tons of high school teams and athletes in Florida that would grind NCT into the ground in nothing flat.

6:36...would you like borrow the Shark coaching staff for a year to show you have to make ordinary athletes into extraordinary athletes?

You people should be ashamed and embarrassed of yourselves. How can you derive so much pleasure out of another human beings misfortune? You are the worst of the worst in Hernando County. Do you all actually read before you post? You are all absolutely giddy that an entire team is going through a rough time. Come on people….evolve….open your mind and put yourself in our shoes. I could say, what comes around goes around, and karma is a *****. But the fact is, is that I would not wish this on any team.
I wish the Sharks the best of luck for the remainder of their season, and hope they go far in the playoffs.

HAHa A suspension hahaha what for a meaningless game, and im not sure but i think one of the games was a preseason game! common be real. With the amount of times the word "family" is used and how it is used in this blog, and the circumstances that NC..T has found themselves in lately, one might compare the NC..T family so the sopranos!!

First things first, the teams around here are tired of losing some of their best athletes, no matter the sport, to NCT...a Tech School....if they want to play a sport, then it needs to be at their home school. The taxpayers know what is going on out there...Home schooled kids have to go to their zoned school to play atletics, and that is what should be going on at NCT. As a parent of a football player, I for one am sick of our boys getting spit on, cheap shots, and the verbal abuse that goes on when we have to play NCT. Maybe it is a good school, but if you had to judge them by their actions, well then so be it. It is time for all 3 high schools in this county to come together to fight NCT and get the kids that really belong there, there. The ones that have an IEP in place, that have no intention to go to college, but will need a job out of school. I don't know about you, but I don't know many standout athletes that attended College from a Tech School. We have 4 great high schools in this county and they all have something they can offer the kids that go there, but your choice of school should be limited to the curriculum not the sports....and that is not what is being done at NCT...kids that should be out there are not getting in and the kids that can play basketball, softball, and football are slipping in left and right....check it out for yourselves, you will all see.......

Everyone of those schools recruits - there are many instances where a particular athlete decided to go ROTC for Navy or Airforce just so they can get into SHS or CHS or Army for HHS - there are a few other select programs that those schools use for recruiting as well - I know there are wrestlers that attend SHS right now that are not zoned for there - so get off your high horse Bob!

The NCT articles were skipped because thats what you keep bringing up. The other schools have issues also. That was the point. People like you only bring up NCT's.
And Sumter? No. I would probably bet that South Lakes coach and admin know they were at fault also. So thats just...Hernando.
And the kids served suspensions!!! They were not found guilty of anything!
Please stay oUT!

5:33 - yes I am doing the NC..T thing just to make it clear that the school is being missused.

6:56 - Hernando, Lake, and Sumter Counties just to name the ones I know for a fact. and as far as your dr. phil mumbo jumbo, you got me i am envious of their 9-0 record as are the detriot lions, penn state, and every other team that has a loss. I am not however willing to stoup to their lows to achieve greatness.

7:04 - 1st off i do not have a team. I am an outsider looking in subjectively that has a couple good inside sources. anyways, That same coaching staff of chs' has beaten you twice just in case you have forgotten.

ANd as far as the newspapers go, I love how he skipped all of the NC..T ones that have all occured within the past 4 years. No one said the other schools were perfect. I would be interested to see if they let those kids play though, like NC..T HAS DONE.

iM oUT!

C'mon! idiotic and Blockheadedness! I'm not NCT - Sure folks, the Truth is never as much fun as hear say and hatred/bias banter, my bad for thinking that some of you might actually have the intellectual capability to actually THINK while you attempt to READ! I understand that some you really just hate your rivals and opponents - When I read some of "ya'lls" stuff I see that NCT is like the Spider for you - you know, What do people do when they see a BIG spider crawling across the floor - they kill it! Why? It's different, they don't understand it and it SCARES 'em! Maybe NCT will be crushed and disappear from your Hernando County floor, but probably not before they become only the 2nd Football team ever to go 10-0 in a season (Hernando! the other). Maybe you guys should change you thought process and focus on your own declining programs. Sorry I offend you, but once again only FACTS!

634 those are old, however the basketball instance is old too, yet people keep bringing it up as if it has to do with the football team.

647 "james" , if we did that then we'd probably dominate that as well and get in trouble for recruiting from the outside world.

656 and 704 really are the only two posts that explain it all in a nutshell.

"I only deal with FACTS and REALITY as I see it"

Posted by: Realism | November 11, 2008 at 07:23 PM

**********

Realism's philosophy is known as idiotic blockheadedness. It seems to be widely practiced at NCT! That's the way I see it.

Two questions:

1. If Joyner appeals, and I am sure he will--is the suspension on hold till they rule, and who handles the appeal??

2. Can he attend practices?

Ah! Yes Nature Coast did take the higher fine, as of course you are aware, NCTHS had a few more players cited as responding "inappropriately" or "unsportsmanlike", but I do believe it is correct to say that the State acknowledged the initial encroachment by the Central players. NCT was cited for their "reaction" not their "instigation". Now, maybe once again NCTHS "reacted" inappropriately or "unsportsmanlike" to an apparent "instigating behavior" by South Lake. I guess you could argue that NCTHS has just not learned from past mistakes. But, player wise - only 1 NCT player implicated. Hey, I'm not gonna get into a shouting match over the Joyner situation, but you did not respond about how you would react if attacked! I only deal with FACTS and REALITY as I see it or read it - that doesn't make me an expert - just a little level headed and practical. Hey, can anyone comment on the question regarding South Lake trampling their own player?

Great...now Dr. Phil (aka 6:56) is mixed up in this. I thought this thread was about a high school football coach getting suspended.

Oh my 6:56....Truly inspiring post!

That’s what I have been waiting for Bob, for you to finally admit the real reason for all your animosity. Quote: “Imagine how good SHS, HHS, & CHS would be with all of the NC..T players going where they are zoned to go“. That’s it in a nutshell. But I have another alternative for you. Imagine how good CHS would be if their coaching staff put forth the same energy and intensity as the Sharks coaching staff do. And I only point Central out because I think Springstead and Hernando have good coaches. Springstead is a good team, and Hernando is on their way with their new coach.
You all should probably focus a little more on “Your” football team instead of ours.

Well since everyone wants to make it about the school every one of those articles are relevant. You clowns start throwing around the word thug and stuff. And Bob, 3 or 4 different counties? Okay.. Name em slick. You continue to prove yourself as a moron.

We often feel envious or malicious because of our own conflicts with self-esteem or with self-limitations. There is a lack of self-worth and often a feeling of inferiority. Envy falsely assumes that self-worth can be attained through possessions or achievements. When these belong to someone else, the envious person feels a loss of self-worth and wishes that the other person would lose these things so that his own self-worth can be restored.

I think NCT should resign from the FHSAA since they think they are being set up and picked on. And they should join a prison league.

Yeah, right your unbiased, Realism. hahha. And exactly when was Central found to be "at fault" last year, didn't NCT get the higher fine?

I didn't know Dot Dodge was on the football team, ha.

you guys bringing up articles like 6 years old. older than nct? come on now. let the old articles be.

who ever is posting those news stories is a winner. However, i'm sure those stories will prove to be irrelevant so the nay sayers that are still hanging around because NCT is the only one that matters.

I won't bother with Hernando.. Those articles are fairly new and probably havn't even been archived yet.
Fruity b-ball coach..wallet..prom.. all that.

Springstead High's Dot Dodge admits to using marijuana, a violation of district policy. She avoids disciplinary action by retiring.

Gotta love google...

Narcotics officers from the Hernando County Sheriff's Office were part of an operation that seized cocaine and marijuana.

The following eight Hernando County residents were arrested:

Chase, a former quarterback for Central High School's football team, was being held in lieu of $5,000 bail. J.C., a backup fullback for Central this season, was sent to the juvenile detention center in Ocala.
None of them could be reached for comment. It was not clear what motivated the fight with Urso.
"I think they're just a bunch of scumbags to jump my brother, especially the father. He's a grown man," said Nicholas Nobisso, Anthony's 19-year-old brother.
Central football coach John Wilkinson said J.C. Evans "has been good for us," and that he hasn't shown this kind of behavior before.
The coach remembered a fight involving the brother, Chase.
"He once got in a fight with the team kicker, I believe," Wilkinson said.
The coach didn't want to speculate on what potential consequences J.C. Evans might face once the case is resolved.
"But it's definitely going to have some kind of consequences," he said.
