At Hillsborough, Spurrier creates "buzz"

Steve Spurrier last coached the Florida Gators in 2001, but the head ball coach still gets the rock star treatment when he's in the Sunshine State. On Thursday, Spurrier, currently the coach at South Carolina, was at Hillsborough to meet with Terriers RB Lindsey Lamar, whom the Gamecocks are actively recruiting.

While there, he shook hands with teachers, had pictures taken for the school newspaper and signed autographs.

Spurrier"There was definitely a buzz around when he walked around school," Hillsborough coach Earl Garcia said.

Garcia has met Spurrier before. Many times, in fact. While at Florida, Spurrier signed two of Garcia's former Hillsborough players: DB Thomas Miller and OL Shannon Snell. Spurrier's get-together with Lamar "went well," Garcia said.

"It was funny," Garcia said. "He was here for about 45 minutes. When he got here, Wake Forest was in there (meeting with Lamar) so Spurrier had to wait for Wake to get done."

Lamar, also a sprint standout, recently said Wake Forest is his leader. South Carolina, Duke, Michigan and USF also are in the hunt. He will take an official visit to Duke this weekend and one to South Carolina the next.

Lamar rushed for 1,377 yards on only 123 carries this season. The 5-foot-9, 165-pounder would like to run track in college. He is one of the state's premier sprinters (he runs the 100 and 200). You can find his results from the 2008 state track and field meet HERE.
