Williams hopes to grab colleges' attention again
Before the season, Chamberlain wide receiver Anthony Williams emerged as one of Hillsborough County's top prospects. The transfer from Jefferson came out of nowhere to garner offers from the likes of Georgia, Ole Miss and Arkansas.
But less than a month before signing day, Williams, who caught a team-record 13 touchdown passes and averaged 21.8 yards per catch for a Chiefs team that advanced to the Class 5A region final, has no official visits planned and has no clue where he will end up.
The recruiting scene has dried up early on the 6-foot-2 Williams. His phone's not ringing anymore.
"They're not really calling right now," Chamberlain coach Billy Turner said. "I don't understand it. He's a good football player. He's got the body of a college receiver already."
Williams said his cell phone was stolen when the Chamberlain locker room was burglarized in late October, and he was without a phone for more than a month. Because of that, he fears colleges that he lost contact with just thought he was no longer interested.
"I know that's what Ole Miss thinks," Williams said. "Right now, the coaches and I are trying to let schools know that I'm still out there."
Williams believes there's still hope. Louisville and Marshall visited Chamberlain Wednesday and Troy is slated to visit Thursday.
ESPN has ranked Williams the 52nd best wide receiver prospect in the nation.
