Agenda reveals FHSAA may rescind schedule cuts

Could the ugly battle over the 20-percent scheduling cuts put in place Florida High School Athletic Association in April be coming to an end?

It appears so, judging by the agenda for emergency meeting scheduled for July 15. In the agenda, Executive Director Roger Dearing will apparently recommend that the controversial scheduling cuts -- 20 percent for all varsity sports except football and cheerleading, and 40 percent for junior varsity sports -- be rescinded.

The hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Gainesville.

The cuts, which the FHSAA maintains was merely a move to save money, didn't seem to be very popular with many Tampa Bay area coaches. But the fact that the cuts did not include football spawned a lawsuit by a group of parents represented by Nancy Hogshead-Makar, claiming the cuts discriminated against female athletes and were not in compliance with Title IX.

Attempts between the FHSAA and Hogshead-Makar to resolve the issue failed, and a lawsuit was filed. A hearing is scheduled for July 17 in Jacksonville, but Hogshead-Makar told the Times-Union that she will proceed with her attempts at getting an injunction to prevent the policy from being restored later.

“The only thing that has made the Florida High School Athletic Association act is litigation,” Hogshead-Makar told the paper.

JV football only gets 5 games this year

And Cheerleading is hardly a sport. A Sport is, "A set of competitive activities in which winners and loser are determined within an established set of rules."

So, cheering the sideline of a football game hardly constitutes a sport.

Da TMONT.....did you read the article??? The law is if you cut games it must be equal between the young ladies and young men....Equal!! Cheerleading has approx. 5000 ladies and football has approx, 37,000 young men you do the math if your able too! This law protects all from Gender bigots like Roger Deering head of the FHSAA. Like it or not...it's the law (:

Hey tmont, do you know know what the word rescind means? Did you actually read this article? The executive director Roger Dearing is apparently going to take the budget cuts with team sports back and let all the student-athletes play the allotted games they had before, yet you still complain.

Maybe if you spelled your words correctly your posts would be taken more seriously.

thats redicoulus. football team has cheerleading thats the female roll in that event. why make a big deal about it. if they lower the amount of football games thats a big cut of profit down the drain. if anything they should add games.
