Staying put pays off for Leto's standout running back Jeremy Deering

Deering In the third and final part of our series on transfers, we take a look at players who play at lower profile programs and still become high profile recruits.

One of the players we feature is Leto running back Jeremy Deering, who has 39 Division I scholarship offers despite playing for a team that was just 3-7 last year.

“I had been there since my freshman year so I just decided to stay,” said Deering, who ran for 1,000 and threw for 850 yards last season. “If you’re good, they’ll find you, so I wasn’t too worried about that. I’m not all that interested in trying to win state because I’m trying to get to college and then hopefully get to the next level. That was really my main concern.”

One advantage is that Deering has been showcased at multiple positions -– mostly because he’s needed to be with just 34 players on the varsity roster. Last year, he played running back, quarterback and defensive back. This year, the Falcons plan on utilizing him mostly at running back and sometimes at quarterback in a Wildcat formation.

It’s allowed college recruited to see his skills. And now, about 74 percent of the schools recruiting him, Leto offensive coordinator Frank Rose said, are recruiting him as a wide receiver.

“At his size, it’s the perfect spot for him,” Rose said. “He has great hands. We want to utilize him more there this year.”

Jeremy is a great player and the coaches at Leto have worked just as hard as him to build their program. Leto is a great school to coach and to play at. Not only in football but in many other sports. Our players are all loyal to us as we are to them. I can only speak for baseball that we are graduating 8 seniors this season, 5 are homegrown from the 9th grade and the other 3 had been recruited away from our school and came back where they belong. The loyalty will pay off for Jeremy as it will for many other student athletes at Leto and any other NOT SO SUCCESSFUL PROGRAMS..we are all successful when we get these kids to graduate high school and get a chance to go to college or even just get a good job. Only 1% of 1% of high school athletes will have a career in the sport they play. Go FALCONS

Thank you for writing an article about a kid who was loyal to his team and teammates - There are a lot of kids like this that should be getting the print - I'm tired of hearing about the kids that transfer because someone told them thats the only way they will get noticed. There's something to say about a kid that has the confidence that he WILL get noticed and the character to want to win with his team- If you're good - they will find you
