Youth football clinic brings back former high school standouts
Several former Hillsborough County high school football standouts will return home to participate in Saturday's Hometown Heroes Youth Football Clinic from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at USF's Fowler Fields.
The camp, which is free and for children ages 8-14, is being hosted by the Center for Urban Programs and Services Goal Line Sports Foundation, which has helped nearly 100 Tampa high school student athletes earn college scholarships by emphasizing life skills needed to be successful on and off the field.
The clinic will be highlighted by former local standouts who were beneficiaries of the program, most notably current Alabama cornerback and former Robinson standout Javier Arenas (top left), ex-Middleton and South Carolina cornerback Stoney Woodson (a recent draft pick of the New York Giants) and former Hillsborough defensive lineman and current FSU player Moses McCray.
Also participating are 2005 Guy Toph Award winner Marcello Trigg (Robinson H.S./Bucknell) as well as Dominic Grooms (Middleton H.S./Tennessee State), Greg Ellison (Robinson H.S./FIU), Armondo Murillo (Robinson H.S./Nebraska) and Raymond Neal (King H.S./Fort Hayes State).
“This camp is a way of encouraging our members on the importance of giving back,” Center for Urban Programs executive director Michael Brown said. “The best way for these guys to understand the importance is to get directly involved and involved early.”
Former UF and Bucs receiver Reidel Anthony will also participate as an instructor.
The Center for Urban Programs Goal Line Sports Foundation take student athletes and provide them with resources most helpful in improving their performance in school on the sports field and in their community.
Organizers are still seeking sponsorships. For more information, call Brown at (813) 569-9300.
