Nature Coast prinicpal Tizzy Schoelles said Thursday she has notified
Williston of her intent to appeal to the Florida High School Athletic
Association. Within her appeal, which she hopes to send via fax
Thursday afternoon, Schoelles will request the FHSAA reverse its
decision to cancel Friday's playoff game against Williston.

Schoelles said a Williston administrator planned to contact the FHSAA
to see about having the game moved to Saturday, if it was restored.
Williston athletic director Jamie Baker, also the head football coach,
did not immediately return a message left on his cell phone.

Nature Coast was forced to forfeit its Class 3A region
quarterfinal Friday and was fined $10,400 by the FHSAA on Wednesday.

The ruling was in response to a Nov. 7 brawl with Groveland South Lake. South Lake
was fined $8,500 and will not be allowed to play in a bowl game this
season.

"He's definitely deserving from our end," Callahan said.

The 6-foot-4, 235-pound senior has 55 tackles this year (35 solo), with 12 tackles for loss and six sacks for the nationally ranked Hawks, who have arguably the country's best defense. And he has done that despite rarely playing more than two quarters in a game.

He recently told the Times that Florida, USF and North Carolina were among his favorites.

Nature Coast has been forced to forfeit its Class 3A region quarterfinal Friday against Williston and was fined $10,400 by the Florida High School Athletic Association on Wednesday.

The FHSAA notified Nature Coast and Groveland South Lake of its final ruling in its investigation into a Nov. 7 brawl between the schools. The schools can appeal the ruling, but such an appeal would not be held until late this month, after the playoff game. South Lake was fined $8,500 and will not be allowed to play in a bowl game this season.

In a letter to Nature Coast principal Tizzy Schoelles:

* The Nature Coast football program is placed on restrictive probation for the remainder of the 2008 season, meaning it will be forced to forfeit its Class 3A region quarterfinal playoff game Friday against Williston. Williston automatically advances to the region semifinal.

* Nature Coast is levied fines totaling $10,400 for violating several rules, including 48 counts of unsportsmanlike conduct at $100 each.

* The Nature Coast football program is placed on administrative probation effective immediately through June 30, 2010.

* The Nature Coast athletic program is reprimanded.

But because the junior is only 5-foot-8, 150 pounds, some think his lack of size is a liability and quite possibly could keep major college programs away.

"I've talked to a lot of college coaches regarding him," Plant coach Robert Weiner said. "And his size definitely is an issue when talking to recruiters."

But should it be? Weiner doesn't think so.

"They probably come across 100 guys like him size wise that are good players," Weiner said. "For every 100 guys, there's one at that size who really will make it as a college prospect, and to me, he's the one. He's just got not only the instinct and speed to play at the highest level, he also has the toughness to go along with it."

Thus far in 2008, Sampson has 49 catches for 788 yards and 11 touchdowns. Additionally, he has rushed for 192 yards and two touchdowns on 32 attempts.

Wanting to get some extra insight, I checked in with Revord's Jesuit teammate, Jordan Schilit. Here is some of what he had to say about Revord:

"He just puts every ounce of energy into every race. He's truly a competitor."

When the two were freshman (they're both now seniors), they barely knew each other, but Revord made an immediate impact in his first high school race -- the Red Mule 5K: "I remember that he came out of nowhere and did a 16:14."

"He's had talent his whole life. He's had a top position (in running) his entire life."

Of losing, for Revord that's "not an option."

Having a runner of Revord's caliber on the squad has made the Tigers better -- and not just because of the points he accumulates. "There's a ripple effect." That's because everyone on the team tries their best at all times to keep up with him, he said.

Revord has two top-10 finishes at state, but "I don't think we've seen his best yet. He keeps getting better."

The 5-foot-11 1/2, 178-pound Gaither standout already has taken officials to South Carolina and Tennessee. He committed to Tennessee over the summer but backed off that commitment recently when the Volunteers decided to let go longtime head coach Phil Fulmer after the season.

Giles, whom most recruiting services rate as a four-star prospect, said the Cornhuskers are very much in the picture. "It's a football town ... it's a football state," Giles said. "They get you ready for the next level. Running backs wise, they've put a lot of backs in the next level. It's a little different than the SEC, but it might be a good place to fit in for me."

"I want to leave the state, so no matter where I go, it's going to be cold," Giles said. "My brother (Devin) plays for Washington State. If he can handle (the cold), I can handle it. He's even more of a Florida boy at heart than I am."

Giles said it is possible he will take two more visits after his trip to Nebraska. He enjoyed his recent trip to South Carolina and remains very high on the Gamecocks. He also said Tennessee is "still there," but he's waiting to see who the program's new coach will be.

In seven games this fall, Giles has rushed for 907 yards and 13 touchdowns.

The Florida High School Athletic Association is expected to make its final ruling tomorrow concerning Nature Coast's playoff game against Williston on Friday, among other things.

Tonight, Nature Coast supporters were heard at a Hernando County School Board meeting. St. Petersburg Times staff writer Tom Marshall was there and you can read his report here.

One of those to speak with Ken Lucier, whose son Brad, was suspended indefinitely after a referee identified him for "throwing punches" during a bench-clearing brawl Nov. 7 in a game against Groveland South Lake.

Here's a portion of Tom's report:

Ken Lucier criticized an "unacceptable investigation," and said his son had acted honorably.
"His actions were based upon his devotion to his teammates and the athletic staff at Nature Coast High School," he said. "He is the type of person who would give everything he has and take nothing for
himself."
Board members offered no comments on the FHSAA probe, but said they would support their schools in any case.
"We need to stick by you until this thing is over," said member Pat Fagan. "You will have my support."

If they are all victorious, this would mark the third time three Hillsborough County volleyball teams win state titles.

In 2003, Plant (5A), Berkeley Prep (2A) and Bayshore Christian (1A) won states. And in 1998, Berkekey (3A), Tampa Prep (2A) and Bayshore (1A) claimed state crowns.

Here's a look at how those wins shook out:

2003:
Class 5A -- Plant def. Fort Myers, 27-25, 25-15, 25-20
Class 2A -- Berkeley Prep def. P.K. Yonge, 25-23, 25-22, 25-18
Class 1A -- Bayshore Christian def. Maitland Orangewood Christian, 20-25, 22-25, 29-27, 25-16, 15-11

1998:
Class 3A -- Berkeley Prep def. Melbourne Central Catholic, 15-5, 15-6
Class 2A -- Tampa Prep def. Lake Highland Prep, 15-11, 15-3
Class 1A -- Bayshore Christian def. Gainesville Oak Hall, 9-15, 15-10, 15-11

Theofilos, who has committed to play volleyball at Notre Dame, is the Bucs' sole senior starter. She is averging 5.7 assists and 4.1 digs per game.

"She is amazing," Berkeley Prep coach Randy Dagostino said. "There's never a moment when she's not energetic and focused. You see how she plays the game and that's how she is in practice. Her leadership sets an example for our younger players. She is a great example for how the game should be played."

The Bucs (27-2) face Miami Florida Christian in the Class 3A state semifinals Friday at 4 p.m. at the Lakeland Center.

In fact, he wasn't even allowed inside the stadium.

So where was he Friday night?

After giving some thought to attending another game, Weiner ultimately decided to work.

"I spent the time setting up practice sheets and stat sheets -- everything I used to do late Friday after games to get ready for the week ahead," he said. "It was actually a pretty productive couple of hours."

Naturally, it killed Weiner not to be with his team, but he knew the Panthers were in good hands. In his absence, WR coach T.J. Lane served as acting coach. Plant won 42-0 over an improving Robinson squad.

"He did a tremendous job," Weiner said. "He's such an unbelievable coach. But really, I have a lot of unbelievable coaches. Any of them could have done that job. I really put him in that role because his duties replaced what I did in terms of play calling."

Weiner will be back on the sidelines this week when Plant plays host to Lakewood in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.
