Delmon Young suspended

Devil Rays prospect Delmon Young was suspended indefinitely Thursday by the Triple-A International League pending a review of Wednesday night's incident when he flipped his bat at an umpire.

“The Devil Rays organization supports the decision by International League President Randy Mobley to suspend Delmon Young indefinitely for the incident that took place last night in Pawtucket,'' executive vice president Andrew Friedman said in a statement. " We do not tolerate this type of conduct from anyone in the Devil Rays organization.  We will meet with Delmon and his representatives as soon as possible to further address this unfortunate situation.  It cannot and will not be repeated.'' The Bulls played again Thursday afternoon in Pawtucket, R.I. Young was not at the stadium.

He deserves to spend the rest of the year in the minors. Talented or not, this guy has emotional trainwreck written all over him.

Why isn't this a bigger story? The Times buried it inside, and it's just a sidebar in the TBT*. On the other hand, it's all over the 'net. Imagine the media frenzy if Reggie Bush or Vince Young took a whack at anybody with a bat....

Except that Delmon didnt whack anyone with a bat. He flipped it in the air and it hit him.I'm not defending Delmon's actions, but let's not act like he pulled a Marty McSorely on the umpire.

.."He flipped it in the air and it hit him"... Well, Yeah!!! He THREW (not flipped) it from 10-15 feet away and it hit him in the chest pretty darn hard! Have you seen the tape? "Baseball Tonight" is all over it! HELL-O!!!! McSorley (not to mention Todd Bertuzzi) would be proud! It's a wonder he isn't in Jail, not just suspended. Like I said, it's all over the net and ESPN, why isn't it a story in the Tampa Bay area? (calling Eric Deggans....)

Ok, the people I work around only earn an average of ~$80k/year. But if they show up for work one day and decide in the heat of the moment to throw a #2 pencil at someone on the job, they're gone. No questions asked.Less than 17% of people on ESPN's poll think this retard should be suspended for life. Please tell me why crazy behavior from "profesional" athletes is considered to be acceptable. Fire him.

The incident is most regretable but certainly not unpredictable. Mr. Young should not set foot on a field until after the 4th of July. When he does come back, there should be zero tolerance for the rest of the season, ie, one ejection and he's home til after Christmas. The idea of his appearing in the Majors this season is ludicrous and should be ruled out openly by Rays' management. Other incidental points: how does one argue that a player who gets himself ejected in the first inning of a minor league game has any idea of what he's suppose to be doing with his time in the minors; it is sad to see the striking minor league umps attempting to manipulate the incident to their advantage, defending Young and casting the blame toward the replacement umps.

You know what, I spoke without seeing the video. I only read the reports -- quoting AP "Young then flipped his bat underhand and it sailed end over end" -- which clearly did not even come close to indicating the severity of the incident. So I apologize. Wow is all I can say. That was fierce, and it's coincidental I mentioned McSorely, because now I think it definitely belongs in a category like that. But the ball was OUTSIDE! ;-)

SO THIS WAS NOT THE FIRST TIME HE LOST HIS TEMPER...IT WILL HAPPEN OVER AND OVER AGAIN...I SAY BAN HIM FROM BASEBALL.

To "Learn the facts" - No problem, it looks like your original post was justified given the facts you had from the AP...Excuse me for venturing into Eric Deggans' territory here but the early printed reports definitely severely downplayed the severity of the incident. Focus on 3 things from the original account.1) "Young then flipped his bat underhand and it sailed end over end, striking the umpire" - Obviously an understatement. 2) "Regular minor league umpires are on strike this season. Fill-ins umps — most of them with college or high school experience — have been working in their place." - Why was this even mentioned? Is it ok to assault (yes assault) a replacement ump rather than a "regular" ump?3) "After the game, Durham manager John Tamargo said he hadn’t spoke to Young and hadn’t “gotten his side of it.” “We’ve had some problems with different umpires and it’s tough. But I can’t say any more,” he said"- Ah, a master at Spin Control, he'll go far in the organization....Thank God for video, the Spin Doctors had their shot, it can't compete with the visual.

Lockbull, Don't let this die down!!learn the facts, you're a man to admit your first comment was wrong about the severity of this incident, after watching the tape. This needs to be dealt with swiftly and severely, there is NOTHING that can cause a player to react like this, racial slurs included. Would Jackie or Hank have acted this way? They endured a lot more than a called 3rd strike!!!!!!!!!!!!Angels Fan (Anaheim Angels, Not LA Angels)

..The more I think about it, the more I think Tamargo should see some consequences. Read between the lines, he's looking for justification for what is in my opinion an unjustifiable act. I'm going to try to contact the Ray's new Brass about this. Let's see if I can get through to them again....
