Rocco's back, Cantu too

Rocco Baldelli's bruised right knee felt good enough for him to return to the Rays lineup on Sunday. Baldelli, assuming he gets through pre-game drills with no problem, will bat leadoff as the DH in his first action since colliding with the outfield wall in Anaheim Thursday. Baldelli could be limited somewhat on the bases but manager Joe Maddon wanted to get his bat back in the lineup.

With Oakland starting a lefthander, the Rays are also giving Jorge Cantu his first start at first base. Cantu, the Rays starting second baseman much of the last two seasons, played seven games at first at Triple-A Durham and said  he felt comfortable there.

Maddon also moved B.J. Upton up in the lineup (to sixth) and stuck with Ty Wigginton at third despite an 0-for-16 road trip.

Rocco's return?

CF Rocco Baldelli said the swelling in his bruised right knee had gone done, but his chances of returning to the lineup on Sunday don't sound good. Manager Joe Maddon said he would let Baldelli state his case on Sunday morning, but was already talking about how Baldelli could have the benefit of Monday's off-day and return on Tuesday.

The other bit of interesting pre-game news was that RHP Shawn Camp had worked his way back into the mix for important late-inning relief duty and was likely to share that role with Brian Stokes.

No Rocco ...

As expected, CF Rocco Baldelli was not in the Rays lineup Friday, a day after bruising his right leg when running into the outfield wall. Baldelli has a softball-sized indigo-colored bruise on the inside of his right knee. He likely won't play until Sunday, or when the Rays return home on Tuesday. The lineup: Dukes, cf Harris, ss Crawford, lf Wigginton, 3b Young, rf Pena, 1b Navarro, c Gomes, dh Upton, 2b

Baldelli leaves game

Rays CF Rocco Baldelli left Thursday's game shortly after an awkward and forceful collision with the centerfield wall. The Rays said later he had a "right leg contusion" and was considered "day-to-day.''

Baldelli was chasing an Orlando Cabrera hit when he appeared to stumble and then hit the wall with his right knee and his upper body. He finished the inning in the field and jogged to the dugout, but went immediately to the clubhouse and was followed by trainer Ron Porterfield.

Baldelli, who has had a series of injuries in his career, was replaced by Elijah Dukes. The Rays were losing 9-0 at the time.

Morning after

The Rays didn't have a lot of time to reflect on their poor play with an early game in Anaheim.
Manager Joe Maddon made a few changes to the lineup, including puttin Ben Zobrist back at short:

Though a bit bleary-eyed after an all-night flight, the Rays are preparing to play the Angels tonight.

Aki kept self in game, Cantu embracing first

Rays manager Joe Maddon knew there was something wrong with 3B Akinori Iwamura after his fifth-inning double Monday night, but Iwamura insisted on staying in the game, playing the remainder of the game with a strained right oblique.

"He wasn't comfortable but he really wasn't fessing up either," Maddon said. "After his last at bat you could see that the swings were really not that good. When he came off the field I was going to take him out, but he insisted that he could play defense."

Now, the Rays could lose Iwamura, arguably their best player of the season's first three weeks, for the next four to six weeks, Maddon said. He will rehab and  receive treatment at the Rays minor league complex in St. Pete.

Meanwhile, the Rays recalled Jorge Cantu, who left St. Petersburg in a huff when he didn't make the opening day roster. Maddon said all is fine, especially considering the reports he got from the orgnization's minor-league scouts, who said that Cantu was swinging the bat well and welcomed a move to first base, where he has played seven games and where he will likely see the most time in the field when not DHing.

Cantu, who had a 5 p.m. flight out of Durham, wasn't in the clubhouse by the beginning of Tuesday's game. He should see significant time in the Rays lineup at first against left-handed pitching, but the Rays face a pair of right-handers in Anaheim (John Lackey and Bartolo Colon) and two righties ithe first two days in Oakland (Chad Gaudin and Dan Haren).

Aki to DL, Cantu to return

Last night's win over the Yankees came at a cost, as the Rays will have to place 3B Akinori Iwamura on the disabled list with a strained right oblique today.

The team will recall Jorge Cantu from Triple-A Durham.

It's still not clear when during Monday's game Iwamura was injured. He played the entire game and had two hits against former Central League opponent Kei Igawa. He reached base four times (two hits, two walks) and scored three runs for the Rays.

Cantu is hitting .267 with no homers and eight RBIs in 75 at bats in Durham. The team's MVP in '05, Cantu was the last player cut during spring training. With Iwamura's absence, the Rays can use Ty Wigginton, Brendan Harris and maybe even Cantu at third base. Cantu has spent time recently playing first base at Durham, after he was used solely as a DH at the end of spring training when B.J. Upton took over the second base job.

Because it's an oblique injury, the Rays aren't sure how long Iwamura will be sidelined, but sometimes those type of injuries can take months to heal, based on the severity. Regardless, the Rays are taking a wait-and-see approach.

Iwamura on DL

Rays third baseman Akinori Iwamura will be placed on the 15-day disabled list after straining his right oblique earlier this week, the team announced today.

The Rays will call up Jorge Cantu from Durham to take his place.

The Yankees are here ....

Tropicana Field is abuzz with the Yankees in town and national TV crews from the U.S. and Japan. In what has become somewhat the norm, manager Joe Maddon is tinkering more with his lineup. Rocco Baldelli will be the DH as Elijah Dukes gets the start in center. Also Josh Paul is starting ahead of Dioner Navarro. The lineup: Baldelli, dh Harris, ss Crawford, lf Wigginton, 1b Young, rf Iwamura,3b Dukes, cf Paul, c Upton, 2b

Back in business ...

The Rays were feeling better Friday, apparently over the virus that effected a half dozen players on Wednesday. With that manager Joe Maddon is trying a different look to his lineup, using Brendan Harris ahead of Ben Zobrist (who is still feeling a bit weak) at shortstop and giving Jonny Gomes his second start.

The one player who seems most ill today is reliever Brian Stokes, who is unlikely to be used.

Maddon said he will try to find a way to get Gomes more at-bats, mentioning the possibility of using him at least in a platoon against lefthander starters. And he said while Harris may get more regular playing time at shortstop, Zobrist remains the primary starter.

sick feeling

UPDATE
Rays ace lefthander Scott Kazmir may not have been feeling all that well either. He lasted only four innings, and threw 100 pitches in the process, leaving with the score 3-3.

With a flu racing through the clubhouse the Rays are scrambling to put together a lineup. It looks like Akinori Iwamura is out, with Brendan Harris going to third and Ben Zobrist who also isn't feeling well playing short. Elijah Dukes is in center and Rocco Baldelli is the DH.

At least to start the game, the Rays have enough semi-healthy players:
Baldelli, dh

Throwback Tuesday

The Rays are trying to bounce back from a frustrating Monday loss. Though the bullpen played a key role in the loss, manager Joe Maddon said he plans to stick with his current bullpen plan, which is using Jae Kuk Ryu and Gary Glover in the sixth and seventh innings, Brian Stokes in the eighth and Al Reyes in the ninth.

Maddon has another new lineup for Tuesday's game, rewarding hot-hitting Brendan Harris with another start and sitting down Ben Zobrist who has a .170 average and has not walked in 48 plate appearances. He also moved B.J. Upton to DH, playing Ty Wigginton at second and Carlos Pena at first.

End of the road

The Rays wrap up the seven-game roadtrip Sunday in Minnesota looking to give a better effort than in Saturday's 12-5 loss. Rocco Baldelli's post-game comments were most telling - and admirably direct - when he said:
""I just don’t think we came ready to play today. Maybe I’m missing someone, but I don’t think there’s one guy who came to the field ready to go and have a good effort. Obviously we went out there and tried, but that wasn’t anywhere near going to be good enough or acceptable. There’s no explanation for it. It’s just bad baseball.’’

Manager Joe Maddon has a different look to his lineup today, sticking to his plan to use reserves Brendan Harris and Jonny Gomes, though he has Gomes batting ninth. He also sat down B.J. Upton, who had a sloppy game Saturday, moving Ty Wigginton to second and sticking with Carlos Pena at first.

S-a-t-u-r-d-a-y night

The Rays are looking for their first back-to-back road wins since June 28-30 of last season when they take on the Twins Saturday night. They were still feeling pretty good over Scott Kazmir's strong outing on Friday and their win over two-time Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana. It was the fourth time they'd beaten a reigning Cy Young pitcher.

The Rays win - their first in Minnesota since June 2004 - was big news in the local papers. The Star-Tribune headline, which was posted in the Tampa Bay clubhouse, was: Rays, of all teams, halt Santana's run

Check out Sunday's Times for a look at Japanese 3B Akinori Iwamura's success, as well as the significance of the Jackie Robinson anniversary in the Rays' clubhouse.

Manager Joe Maddon has Elijah Dukes back in centerfield tonight, with Rocco Baldelli at DH. Dukes had some problems breaking back on balls hit in front of him on Thursday.

Day after ...

Thursday night's bizarre double play - the result of Carl Crawford's odd baseunning mistake - remained a primary topic of conversation before Friday's game. In short, third-base coach Tom Foley said he wouldn't do anything differntly, Crawford said he would do things differently after realizing he made a mistake (though he still thought he had a triple), and manager Joe Maddon said he thinks they'll all learn from it.

Crawford took most of the questions and criticism well, but did point out that he found it unfair that ESPN's Jim Rome hammered him on his TV show though he has never said much about him with all the good he has done.

Otherwise, the talk was about Friday's marquee pitching matchup, with Rays ace LHP Scott Kazmir facing Twins two-time Cy Young Award winner LHP Johan Santana. Aware that lefthanders tend to have more success against Santana than righthanders, Maddon out three in his lineup - Ben Zobrist, Carl Crawford and Carlos Pena.

Also, Rocco Baldelli is back in centerfield. Rookie Elijah Dukes broke back on two balls that dropped in front of him Thursday.

Not looking ahead ...

Friday's marquee matchup between LHPs Johan Santana and Scott Kazmir is a big deal, but Rays manager Joe Maddon said Thursday he was more interested in seeing how Casey Fossum pitched tonight rather than look ahead.

Maddon said he liked how his lineup looked on Wednesday with Rocco Baldelli back in the top spot and Carl Crawford third and plans to keep it that way. He also said it might make No. 2 hitter Ben Zobrist more effective since he won't have to take as many pitches as when Crawford was trying to steal.

Maddon did stick with Carlos Pena at first, raving about how well he swung in batting practice and in the game Wednesday. With Pena at first, Ty Wigginton went to second and B.J. Upton was on the bench. As planned, Elijah Dukes started in center and Baldelli was the DH.

Different look

Eventually, manager Joe Maddon may settle on one lineup. But for now, he continues to seek the right combination. Wednesday, he undid one of the big moves of spring training, flip-flopping Rocco Baldelli back to the leadoff spot and moving Carl Crawford back to third.

Maddon said he felt both looked more comfortable in the other spots.

“I don’t want to try to over-think it at all,’’ Maddon said. “It just felt like a pretty good thing to do tonight based on everything I’m seeing.’’

Getting relief?

Manager Joe Maddon made a point to say Tuesday he still has faith in struggling relievers Ruddy Lugo and Shawn Camp. But he also said he is more willing to try others in their late-inning roles, and the next two to get their chances are likely to be Gary Glover and Jae Kuk Ryu.

Meanwhile, there are rumors circulating about possible interest in struggling Houston closer Brad Lidge, who lost his job to Dan Wheeler. Early word out of Houston, courtesy of Jesus Ortiz of the Chronicle, is that GM Tim Purpura is not looking to make a deal right now.

Maddon also said he would keep Elijah Dukes in the DH role for now, which means there won't be much playing time for Jonny Gomes.

Sunshine - finally!

The Rays got to step outside in the sunshine for the first time Tuesday when day-long clouds cleared out just before batting practice.

Manager Joe Maddon has much the same lineup Tuesday with Jae Seo on the mound as he did in Monday's loss:
Crawford, lf
Zobrist, ss
Baldelli, cf
Wigginton, 1b
Young, rf
Iwamura, 3b
Dukes, dh
Navarro, c
Upton, 2b

The bullpen is likely to be a popular topic of discussion in Maddon's pre-game media session.

April 09, 2007

Texas shiver

It doesn't feel much like Texas with temperatures in the 50's as the Rays are going through batting practice. Manager Joe Maddon joked about a chance of snow, but it shouldn't be quite that bad. The temps should warm up after some overnight showers.

Rocco Baldelli is back in centerfield as expected, which means rookie Elijah Dukes will have to learn how to handle the DH role. Also, Josh Paul is catching in place of Dioner Navarro.
The full lineup:
Crawford, lf
Zobrist, ss
Baldelli, cf
Wigginton, 1b
Young, rf
Iwamura, 3b
Dukes, dh
Paul, c
Upton, 2b

Maddon said he hadn't decided yet how often Baldelli would play center, and he also said he told struggling SS Ben Zobrist (hitting .059) to not try so hard.

April 08, 2007

Marquee matchup

There's nothing like a 10-foot-tall inflatable roach to preview today's marquee pitching matchup.

As part of Mascot Day here at the Trop, the Zooperstars -- Harry Canary, Ken Giraffey Jr., Derek Cheetah and Ichiroach Suzuki -- performed their rendition of N'Sync's "Bye, Bye, Bye" before the game.

Entertaining it was, but it was just the opening act for Rays ace Scott Kazmir going against Toronto's Roy Halladay in today's series finale.

Rocco Baldelli is back in the Rays lineup, batting third in the DH spot. Ty Wigginton moves over to second base today to give B.J. Upton a day off and Elijah Dukes is back in center, hitting seventh against Halladay, who was 4-1 against the Rays last season. Carlos Pena is at first for the second straight game to give the Rays another left-handed bat.

Kazmir handed Halladay his only loss against Tampa Bay with 8 2/3 innings of two-run ball in a 5-2 win last April 9.

The Rays 23-year-old lefty appeared up for the challenge, striking out Reed Johnson and Lyle Overbay until allowing a towering solo homer to Vernon Wells.

He struck out Frank Thomas to end the innings, but is one run all that Halladay will need?

April 07, 2007

Saturday night fever ....

There was still plenty of excitement at Tropicana Field from Friday's dramatic walkoff win as the Rays took the field for Saturday's game.

The big news was that Rocco Baldelli returned to centerfield for the first time since mid-March, having been limited to DH duties since recovering from tightness in his right hamstring. Manager Joe Maddon also gave 1B Carlos Pena and SS Brendan Harris their first starts, with Ben Zobrist taking a seat and Ty Wigginton moving to DH. Elijah Dukes was also out of the lineup.

Maddon plans to go back mainly to his regular lineup for Sunday's marquee matchup between Scott Kazmir and Roy Halladay, though did raise the possibility that he would use Pena again to get an extra lefthanded bat in the lineup.

Home opener festivities under way

ST. PETERSBURG -– The 10th Devil Rays opening day started Friday much like the first in 1998.
Lots of excitement. Measured expectations.

Yes, there’s a new flower garden, fresh paint and a bigger rightfield video scoreboard.
“But they should have spent that money on a relief pitcher,” said an almost grumpy Al Willis, picking up his season tickets.

The Rays new owners oozed goodwill last year offering perks like free parking. But that charm has now dulled under the intense pressure of the win column.

A sellout crowd of more than 38,000 was expected Friday. Thousands of fans had already made their way to Tropicana Field hours before the 7 p.m. game. Some fired up their grills and tapped a beer keg. Some searched for extra tickets. One group from Valrico painted their chests --- G-O-D-E-V-I-L-R-A-Y-S-!-!-!

“Anything can happen,” said Kevin Hug, a middle school geography teacher who took the day off to get ready for the game against the Toronto Blue Jays. Hug, a converted Chicago Cubs fans, knows a thing or two about being patient. The Cubs haven’t one a World Series since 1908. So to Hug, the Rays 9-year drought seems almost trite.

Sellout for opener

The Rays announced Thursday that Friday's home opener was officially a sellout.

A limited number of obstructed view seats have been made available, but otherwise all tickets have been sold, with a crowd of about 38,600 expected.

Meanwhile, there were snow flurries at Yankee Stadium as the Rays started pre-game drills on Thursday.

Cold weather changes ...

With bitter cold in New York, manager Joe Maddon played it safe by not playing DH Rocco Baldelli and C Dioner Navarro, who both have had hamstring problems. Jonny Gomes will DH Thursday night and Josh Paul will catch.

Maddon said he made the decision for precautionary reasons.

The full lineup is:

Rain won't go away ...

Wednesday's game was postponed due to rain. No makeup date was announced, but it won't be Thursday, when the forecast is again iffy. Most likely there will be a day-night doubledheader when the Rays return to New York in July.

Manager Joe Maddon decided to push all of his pitchers back a day, which means RHP Jae Seo will now work Thursday night's game in New York, James Shields will pitch the home opener Friday, and Casey Fossum will pitch Saturday against Toronto ace Roy Halladay. Scott Kazmir will come back on an extra's day's rest to face the Blue Jays Sunday, and No. 5 starter Edwin Jackson will pitch the opener of the series in Texas on Monday.

The Yankees will push Andy Pettitte back a day, so the Rays will probably stick with much the same lineup Thursday they were going to use Wednesday, with Elijah Dukes moving up to the No. 6 spot and lefthanded-hitting Akinori Iwamura dropping to eighth.

Maddon did say he would wait to see just how cold it was - a wind chill in the low 30s is expected -  before deciding whether to play DH Rocco Baldelli and C Dioner Navarro, who both have had hamstring problems.

Cantu will report to Durham

Disgruntled and demoted second baseman Jorge Cantu will report to Triple-A Durham in time for Thursday’s season opener and will be focused and prepared to play hard, agent Steve Canter said Tuesday.

But whether Cantu plays again for the Devil Rays could be another issue.

Cantu responded to the demotion by requesting the Rays trade him, and Canter initially didn’t want to address whether Cantu could put his hurt feelings aside to eventually rejoin them or how long he would be willing to stay in the minors. (He contacted the Times later to say Cantu would play wherever he was assigned.)

"Our request was firm. I think that sums it up," Canter said. "I think right now he’s focused on going to Durham and working hard. He’s made the trade request, and we’re going to go from there."

Cantu has been in the majors since coming up in 2004 and was the Rays’ team MVP in 2005. He had a poor and injury-marred season in 2006, has been working hard to rebound and was stunned at the demotion saying, "I am not a minor-league player."

Canter said his conversations with Rays executive vice president Andrew Friedman did not include any deadlines for a deal. The Rays are not obligated to honor the trade request.

"The club did not provide a time frame," Canter said. "He’s going to go there and work and turn this into something positive. He’s going to get after it. He’s a tough guy."

The Rays have had concerns about Cantu’s defense, specifically a lack of range, and decided to send him down when they were comfortable that B.J. Upton could do a better job at second base. He also was considered for a part-time designated hitter role and lost out on that to Jonny Gomes. At Durham, Cantu is expected to be primarily a DH.

Canter disputed the Rays’ evaluation of his client.

"The club said they moved Jorge off second base because of his defense. But Jorge didn’t make an error all spring, and his range has vastly improved. So I question the validity of that," Canter said. "I think the facts speak for themselves."

Canter also suggested the Rays might miss Cantu more than they think.

"There are other leaders on the club, but I think this club is going to miss his leadership and his bat," Canter said. "He also was one of the club’s most popular players and appreciates all the support of his fans. That being said, Jorge will go to Durham and turn this into something positive and with class."

This is a big year for Cantu (who has a $410,200 salary in the majors and $213,480 in the minors) because at the end of the season, he was to be eligible for arbitration and the big raise that comes with it. Eligibility is determined by major-league service time, so a long stay in the minors could force him to wait another year before cashing in.
