Hazardous materials ...

There is a problem with a mercury spill at Comerica Park, but tonight's game between the Rays and Tigers is expected to be played as scheduled according to the Detroit News.

Here is what the News is reporting on its web site:

DETROIT -- A Detroit Fire Department hazardous materials team was at Comerica Park about 11:45 a.m. today continuing the investigation and clean up of a small amount of mercury that spilled at the stadium Tuesday night.

The team was at the stadium through the night after it was discovered that the mercury leaked from the cuff of a device used to test blood pressure, Detroit fire officials said.

Investigators take the release of mercury serious because the substance is toxic. But today's 7:05 p.m. game against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays is expected to be held without problems, fire officials said.

Comments

Maybe it's not relevant to this thread, but it's a response to the other article on sptimes.com.... I guess it could be tied into hazardous materials. Because Joe Maddon's managerial skills are hazardous to our future.

I hope to god that the reason these talks are stalling is that we are going to cut ties with this joker. There is no reason with the talent we have that we should have the worst record in all of baseball. I don't think any of the players take Maddon seriously. His decisions are frequently questioned publically by the players. The worst thing of all is that we are getting WORSE as the season progresses. We were scary early on this year, putting up some huge offensive numbers. Throughout the year, we have regressed as a team, the last thing you ever want to see from a team this young that should be in a development stage.

With the right manager, this team could excel. We could break the long-standing culture of losing. Maddon has not taken this team in a positive direction or given the fans anything to be encouraged by. This is the most talented roster we've had in the history of the team, and we are doing just as bad as ever, if not worse. I'm not usually the guy to call for heads, but at some point we have to draw a line in the sand and say enough is enough. Maddon is a clown, put him out to pasture.

Maddon has been the perfect manager for this team. His optimism, public support for his players, toughness as demonstrated by his refusal to give in to frustration, brilliant evaluation of talent, capacity to break down a player's skills into its components and ability to give everyone a role on the team are precisely what a young team needs. I do question whether there is enough baseball discipline being demanded, and it may be he has served his purpose and we need a manager who will call for more accountability, but I am not sure that is a problem traced to Maddon. He may be doing it behind closed doors, or he may begin demanding it more as the players become more accustomed to the majors.

Davey Johnson would be perfect for the Rays. He has a proven ability to develope a young pitching staff, has won everywhere he has been and has World Series street cred. He is at the age of one more job, so he would not be too expensive. Stu, show some stones and get a winner in here---not a cheerleader!
