Rays unveil new logos, uniforms
The Rays have a fresh look as of this afternoon, as the team unveiled its new uniforms and logos, blue-themed colors, and shortened name.
The Rays showed the new uniforms off at St. Petersburg's Straub Park on Thursday afternoon, and will be in downtown Tampa Friday for a free event at Gaslight Park starting at 11:45 a.m.
Players will be at area Champs Sports stores this evening from 6-7:30, with the new merchandise available for purchase.
While the idea of dropping Devil from the team name is new, this is the second time the Rays have changed uniforms, but new ownership touts this as the start of a new era as the struggling team begins its second decade.
The Rays changed the name of their website to raysbaseball.com.
"We are now the "Rays" -- a beacon that radiates throughout Tampa Bay and across the entire state of Florida," principal owner Stuart Sternberg said. "Tampa Bay and the Sunshine State are beautiful places. We want the Rays to reflect the best our region has to offer."

They don't look as bad on the real players as the drawings that were leaked made them look. I'm still angry that the road Jerseys don't have "Tampa Bay" on them.
Posted by: Sal | November 08, 2007 at 05:42 PM
i cant believe they caved in to being politically correct and got rid of the devil. we're not even plain old rays anymore (as in sting rays). now we're 'rays of light.' unbelievable. if u want ppl to go to the games put a better team on the field!!!
Posted by: Marshall | November 08, 2007 at 05:55 PM
utterly BLAH. sternberg makes me violently ill. this organization doesn't deserve high expectations. nor should i be wasting my time typing on their blog. but i am anyway.
Posted by: UGH | November 08, 2007 at 05:58 PM
I'm telling you know and mark my words....Taking "Tampa Bay" off the front of the jerseys is the first step in moving the team out of the area.
Posted by: Max | November 08, 2007 at 06:10 PM
I dunno...I guess I like the new look. It is a good idea to part ways with the past, when the past has not been good. A new attitude, a new look, and the next thing ya know we're battling for a play-off spot. Hey, it could happen.
Posted by: Terry | November 08, 2007 at 06:16 PM
That is the best that they could do??? Meh......what a snoozefest.
Posted by: Larry | November 08, 2007 at 06:20 PM
I think that better players would be a more significant step in the right direction...
I like the lettering, but I really don't like the road jerseys not having "Tampa Bay." Do any teams wear road jerseys without the location name on the front? I think the Cardinals are like that, but who else? My final criticism is that the road jerseys are a little too light. I think a tan-colored jersey would look great.
Posted by: Dave W | November 08, 2007 at 06:21 PM
OK, those are cute. Really funny. Now, the joke is over, when are they going to reveal the real jerseys they are going to wear?
Posted by: DW | November 08, 2007 at 06:23 PM
Wow, those uniforms are so boring and plain.
Posted by: Bob | November 08, 2007 at 06:27 PM
I think they are actually decent. I like the simplicity of them. But I do agree that I wish the road jerseys had Tampa Bay on them. These are also way better than the ones that leaked a month ago.
Posted by: Jonathan C. Mitchell | November 08, 2007 at 06:38 PM
HATE, HATE, HATE it. It's bad enough they took "devil" off but then they had to take the whole stingray thing away and turn it into rays of sun? That's pathetic. Sheesh. What is this, the Up With People of baseball? Sting Rays attack. Rays of sun softly float to the earth and then prematurely age you.
Posted by: Barbara | November 08, 2007 at 06:41 PM
The new logo is absolutely horrible. The "rays of light" concept is so lame and uninspiring, and the uniforms are much uglier than the old ones. I am so disappointed that this was the best they could do after all that research. This is a really embarrassing step backward for the franchise.
Posted by: garret | November 08, 2007 at 06:42 PM
I had the uniforms on my website for awhile and I think now as I thought then, they suck. The dark uniforms make them look like Kansas City or Toronto. I liked the Green Vests and the Grays. And don't be surprised when they change the name again to the Sun Rays or the Rays of Sunshine in the next few years, as is indicated by the little sun in the corner of the "R". Its a sad day in Tampa Bay...
Posted by: Greg | November 08, 2007 at 06:42 PM
Unreal...Just when you think it can't get any more embarassing to be a DRays fan, they go and do things like put out terribly boring uniforms, retain their drunk of a pitching coach, and keep Elijah DOUCHE around!! Keep piling it on!!
Posted by: LP | November 08, 2007 at 06:49 PM
How does the Jersey Rays sound? that's where Sternberg wants to move the team.
Posted by: agatha | November 08, 2007 at 06:50 PM
instead of downgrading the name and uniforms how bout they upgrade the players
Posted by: Marshall | November 08, 2007 at 06:54 PM
These Jerseys actually make the Rays look like a real baseball team. You might think the jerseys look boing but it actually makes them look like they have the potential for tradition. The "Devil Ray" was ridiculous.
Posted by: Arthur | November 08, 2007 at 06:54 PM
1) need pinstripes
2) need to say "Tampa Bay"
Period.
Posted by: J Simon | November 08, 2007 at 07:15 PM
Absolutely bland, lame and unoriginal, period. There will be no rest and no stopping my complaints until Tampa Bay is restored to the road uniforms, period. This is unconditional and their calculated, deliberate mistake.
Stu Sternberg, you sir have really made me very disappointed. Now you will explain yourself. You just blanded and muted the iconic nature and severed the identity of the club with the fans. Its a clever ploy, I give you that, and your business acumen is undeniable.
But I will get and I will not rest until an explanation is given, let alone the RESTORATION of TAMPA BAY on the road uniforms. You want to be OUR team, the put OUR COMMUNITY on the uniform!
Posted by: Joe | November 08, 2007 at 07:29 PM
I don't care if they wear tu tu's and and call themselves the "Ray"nbows if the win 90+ games a season. Until then the Bucs, Lightning, and Bulls will get my cash.
Posted by: Kevin | November 08, 2007 at 07:31 PM
i'd like to make one other comment.
to me personally, the lack of "tampa bay" on the roads is atrocious.
but most atrocious is the script/font they elected to print "Rays" in. IT'S AWFUL!!! IT BURNS MY EYES!!!!!
Posted by: UGH | November 08, 2007 at 07:32 PM
never mind. i looked again and the whole uniform is downright ugly, tacky and just plain horrendous.
Posted by: UGH | November 08, 2007 at 07:33 PM
I love them!!!!! Stop the whining!
Posted by: Joel | November 08, 2007 at 07:37 PM
Mr. Topkin or Mr. Shelton or Mr. Romano or whoever reads this. I hope there is a real inquisition of the Rays front office to truly get these men to admit they underestimated the public on the road uniform issue. I am not going to accept this regardless of how well the team plays.
I will not rest until Tampa Bay is restored to the road uniform. And if that means giving a personal piece of my mind in a thoughtful, intellectual and reasoned manner, then I will do it!!! Period, end of story. They can give "coded" answers why the "branding experience" was more important but taking "Tampa Bay" out of the Rays is a slap in the face.
Posted by: joe | November 08, 2007 at 07:37 PM
I already posted a comment on the stupid rays of sun, but I also want to add that I too find it reprehensible that Tampa Bay is not on the jersey. I'm convinced they plan to move the team. What a slap in the face.
Also, that spark thing or whatever it is on the jersey looks like something you want to brush off.
Posted by: Barbara | November 08, 2007 at 07:47 PM
JOKE, WE THE FANS ARE NOT STUPID WE UNDERSTAND THE STALLING UNTILL THE GREATER PLAN CAN HAPPEN WHICH I BELIEVE IS MOVING THE TEAM SOME WHERE ELSE..UNIFORMS, RAYS TANK, BIG SCREEN IN CENTERFIELD NICER BATHROOMS, HOW ABOUT SOME PITCHING AND ANYTHING BUT LAST PLACE 10 YEARS IN A ROW. WHAT A FARM TEAM WE ARE WE LOOK LIKE THE BRIDGEPORT BLUEFISH, GREAT THEY have more ATTENDANCE. I'M A VERY FUSTRATED FAN WHO AFTER 10 YEARS SAYS ENOUGH; SHOW ME IN 08 OR GO BUCS AND BY RAYS
Posted by: scott | November 08, 2007 at 07:49 PM
No reference to Tampa bay......Riduiculous idea who runs this organisation anyway
Posted by: steve | November 08, 2007 at 07:54 PM
rays yipee how about tampabay jellyfish i'm just so fustrated that i had to chime in again rays i can't believe that is the name of a proffesional sports team how about instead of buccaneers its tampa bay waves...........will some one please tell me why we even bother any more with all this hoping and dreams of contention just to see the same old stuff..bring back boggs and mcgriff at least we could have are kids seem some legends play.
Posted by: scott | November 08, 2007 at 08:01 PM
The exclusion of 'Tampa Bay' on the road jerseys is really offensive.
Posted by: Kevin King | November 08, 2007 at 08:06 PM
The new unis - BORING, and that little ray of Sunshine, come on! Way to woosie! Looks more like little league. Tampa Bay needs to be put back on the away jerseys. You're ticking off the only Rays fans left! We're the ones who support the team! The blue is okay, but come on, really, they do look gay!
Posted by: Pat | November 08, 2007 at 08:35 PM
Puh-leese - let's get real, do you think this is really going to help our team? Sternberg and his crew really need to reconsider adding Tampa Bay to the away jerseys. And that little "ray of sunshine" let's just get laughed off the field!
Posted by: Randy | November 08, 2007 at 08:39 PM
The only uniforms that I can remember being this ugly are the 1970's houston astros. Nice Job Stu and Co. Now we really are the laughing stock of the league.
Posted by: bill | November 08, 2007 at 08:52 PM
pulease. They've talked about dropping the "Devil" for years. How can they say this is a new idea?
Posted by: Chris | November 08, 2007 at 08:52 PM
Hey Stu, that's what we really wanted to be known for, A Radiating Beacon, Of what? Who writes that garbage for you.
Posted by: Bill | November 08, 2007 at 08:59 PM
People said the same stuff when the Bucs changed from Orange to Red and Pewter....I like it, but I wish it was blue...makes me think Blue Rays instead of Bleu Jays....
Posted by: Joel | November 08, 2007 at 09:00 PM
I think they should've unveiled it during the fourth game of the World Series.
Posted by: Scott and Alex | November 08, 2007 at 09:02 PM
How original. Looks nothing like a blander version of the Padres-Royals jerseys. Well worth several years of research, experimentation and deliberation.
Those are gonna be the best jerseys for the best 65 win team in all of baseball.
Posted by: Ray Barley | November 08, 2007 at 09:08 PM
Ugh! My 86 year old grandfather has more exciting duds in his closet.
In anticipation of the new logo/uniforms, I had prepped family and friends that they needed to look no further for my holiday gifts. After tonight's unveiling, I emailed all and said "no thanks, I spoke too soon, don't spend a dime on any of it."
See you all next season...I'll be the guy in green.
Posted by: James | November 08, 2007 at 09:25 PM
Amazing how this downtrodden franchise complains of losing money every year, but find ways to push ugly logos and uniforms in the meantime. It's a crime that devoted baseball followers in Tampa Bay are punished by MLB with deviant baseball owners who only look to pad their wallets and put out a minor league product in a worthless dome devoid of any baseball tradition. In 10 years this franchise has purposely refused to invest in high-caliber pitching. Just do us a favor Stu.......leave and take your lousy organization with you!!
Posted by: Tim M | November 08, 2007 at 09:28 PM
The colors are fine, the logo is OK(the primary logo should still have the actual ray swimming beneath the "Rays" mark), but the removal of "Tampa Bay" from the away jersey is disgraceful. It's an insult, plain and simple.
Posted by: Mike | November 08, 2007 at 09:34 PM
WEAK. If you're going to make changes... make changes. Just like everything else- a real half a** job guys.
Posted by: MC | November 08, 2007 at 09:43 PM
I like the new look, and it seems the players like them too. If they like 'em and feel better playing in them, then I'm all for it. There's a change in the air, very similar to when the Bucs switched colors. This is really a positive time for the Rays now, but you couldn't really blame them if they were possibly looking at other areas to play in the future. The majority of fans I read on these blogs are nothing but negative, and who wants to be around that. True fans support their teams regardless of how bad things might get, or the color of the uniforms or the name on the away jerseys. I mean, give me a break. I get the frustration, but give this group and this team a chance. It wasn't too long ago the Bucs were a consistently bad team and had horrible ownership, were sold, changed unis, brought in a couple of key players, and turned it around (but it didn't happen overnight).
Posted by: JOHN | November 08, 2007 at 09:43 PM
They took the picture of the Ray away because they're going to move the team. I just know it. Stu is a traitor to Tampa Bay and the loyal fans.
Posted by: Barbara | November 08, 2007 at 09:43 PM
They're as lame as their ad campaign. Probably the same geniuses who came up with an ad campaign about a baseball team WITHOUT ANY FRIGGING BASEBALL PLAYERS IN IT.
Posted by: Bob | November 08, 2007 at 09:45 PM
They hit a HR on the hats. I always hated the old hats. The jerseys are ok, I liked the green much better though. But, not having Tampa Bay on the road jerseys is a complete disgrace and slap in the face to this region. Stu said he wanted to make this team a regional giant and a part of the community, yet his first move is to take Tampa Bay off the road uni's??? I don't get it. They need to realize right now what a HUGE mistake that is and fix that by the start of the year. Otherwise the region that is forgotten on their jerseys will soon forget this team. I love the Rays. I live and die with them all summer. But, I am appalled that they are taking Tampa Bay off the jerseys. Completely unacceptable!
Posted by: Mike Creyton | November 08, 2007 at 09:52 PM
The Texas Rangers called, they want their hat font back.
The Royals, Padres, Blue Jays, Dodgers, Mariners, and Brewers called, they want their plain blue and white jerseys back.
Posted by: Ranger | November 08, 2007 at 10:05 PM
Disgraceful, insulting and disconnected from OUR tradition, OUR community and, I daresay, OUR money. It makes it plainly obvious that these are shrewd businessmen with NO real interest in contributing to this community. Their so-called community building is a facade to string us along until they can find a better market. They do not understand this area, they do not understand us. They can keep their stinkin' "product". This is from a guy who (used to) drive around with a "Rays" frontplate on his car, win or lose. Hey guys, while they're still here..they are OUR team! Put OUR name one the uniforms or go scratch.
Posted by: Eduardo | November 08, 2007 at 10:25 PM
DO YOU PEOPLE HAVE ANYTHING POSITIVE TO SAY?! If you people represent the fans of the Tampa Bay RAYS, then the team SHOULD move. You people SUCK!!! BLAH, BLAH, BLAH!!!
Posted by: Ray of LIGHT | November 08, 2007 at 10:28 PM
Wow. That's it huh? When I saw these leaked about a month ago I was praying it was a joke but lo and behold here we are with the most boring and stupid looking uniforms in professional sports. Ray of sunshine? Are you FREAKIN KIDDING ME? Well, the Trop will look nice half the season filled with Yankee and Red Sox fans. I'm trying real hard to remain a fan of the home team but they have got to give us SOMETHING besides free parking. 10 years of what? Losing, losing and more losing and now these uniforms that look like they were designed by a first year graphics design student at IADT.
Blech! No thanks. I like the old unis MUCH more.
Posted by: Phil J. | November 08, 2007 at 10:31 PM
I am surprised that with the uproar over the lack of "Tampa Bay" on the road unis when leaked a month ago, that the ownership did not address that transgression before the big release party. I guess they just don't listen to their fans, just to the "marketing" and BS "focus groups"
Posted by: garvin | November 08, 2007 at 10:56 PM
Absolute Crap uniform. I try, year after year, to get behind the home team, but they just keep falling further and further. The un-Tampa uniform is yet another bumbling stumble. Did they actually pay somebody to come up with the new design? Shameful.
Posted by: Al | November 08, 2007 at 11:02 PM
Hmmm, I hated the Bolts jerseys, until I saw them on the ice. Then, I thought they were ok. Still wouldn't buy one and the same applies to the Rays as well. The team needs to commit to either spending the money to compete against the Sox and Yankees or not. That is the real concern, not a colorful thread or the end of the devil. I like the "Devil" gone from the jersey. No longer will I have to explain what a "Devil Ray" is to out of state fans. Thank God!...
Posted by: bolts canucks fan | November 08, 2007 at 11:17 PM
If you were at the event, you heard the "lukewarm" reaction of the crowd when they got their first glimpse.........that's all you need to know.
I want one question answered: Are we sunshine rays or rays that swim?
Pick one and go with it. You cant have both.
Posted by: Shoop | November 08, 2007 at 11:40 PM
I went down with my family to the "Party". It was lame. They had a Champs tent that was selling the "new" Rays merchandise which is available "exclusively" at Champs. The local media was out in force and guess what, they unveiled everything right around 6:00 p.m., just in time for Sternberg and others to be interviewed live on all the local media outlets. This whole event was like a major choreograhed publicity stunt designed around making money. Even the beers were $6.00 from the beer truck. Then they kept plugging Champs 800 times. It's sickening, especially when they won't spend a dime to bring quality players here.
Posted by: Tim | November 09, 2007 at 12:07 AM
Yeeesh. The team may have been bad, but at least the uniforms have always been pretty cool. Now they both stink.
Posted by: Rex | November 09, 2007 at 12:12 AM
I like them the look of the new Unis. I did like the old green and will miss it but perhaps a new look and another off season of improvement will make all the difference. This team will be very fun to watch next year I guarantee it. As for the road unis, I agree that they have to put "Tampa Bay" back on it. Anyway, go Rays and hopefully I can buy a new hat tomorrow at the airport as I'm travelling out of town.
Posted by: Don | November 09, 2007 at 12:38 AM
I can't understand not having "Tampa Bay" on the road jerseys. Ownership talks a good game about its commitment to the area and then allows something like that. It's perplexing.
Of course, winning will make those uniforms look fantastic. Let's hope we see it.
Posted by: Rays | November 09, 2007 at 12:45 AM
The Bucs called, they want their headlines back. Great show tonight!
Posted by: Tampa Ed | November 09, 2007 at 01:47 AM
this franchise = garbage. the owners = useless trash.
Posted by: trash | November 09, 2007 at 01:53 AM
These are easily some of the worst jerseys EVER - these rank right up there with the old school bucs jerseys, the old quebec nordiques, hartford whalers, 70's astros, old school denver nuggets, and the current oregon footballs teams uniforms. What a travesty. Thanks for nothing, Stu Sternberg.
Posted by: Holden McGroin | November 09, 2007 at 02:03 AM
How will anyone ever recognize the team when the uniform changes EVERY YEAR!
And yes, it looks just like the Mariners.
Posted by: Russ | November 09, 2007 at 02:08 AM
Eduardo, Agatha, and Barbara are correct. Management plans to relocate this team. Agatha's New Jersey guess is not a bad one...in fact, it makes total sense on several levels.
As for Joel, he sounds like he's on the Rays payroll along with Bob R. They're both definitely underpaid and as soon as they mature as decent bloggers, Sternberg will trade them for blogging "potential."
Posted by: jr | November 09, 2007 at 02:33 AM
My goodness - all this negative talk about how they dress. Think about it, folks - where else can a family of four go for a couple of hours of truly exciting entertainment for only about $500 including two beers, two cokes and a hot dog? And parking. I think it includes parking. Cut 'em some slack on the clothes. It's not like Ybor - ya know? And they wear their hats straight.

I have no Idea what some people are saying. The croud love the new look and the night was great. Way to go Rays
Posted by: Charlie T | November 09, 2007 at 07:55 AM
I moved to Maine about four years ago. I have battled Red Sox Nation and defended the Devil Rays as young and up and coming. I even said, heaven help me, that we had new ownership and things were looking up. Also, I would return to Florida for at least one series a year and had the MLB package. NO TAMPA BAY ON ROAD UNIFORMS IS UNACCEPPTABLE, AND THERE IS NO DEFENDING THE CHILDISH, TOURIST SUNBURST UNIFORMS. I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO EMBARRASSED OF MY TEAM.
Posted by: Brian | November 09, 2007 at 08:40 AM
What's with that twinkle? Obviously they saved alot of money on design and had some 3rd-grade class design the new look. Now, they can get into the A-Rod bidding sweepstakes.
Sure.
Posted by: BaysBall | November 09, 2007 at 08:53 AM
and um calling the team the Rays is not a new idea. I first heard it in maybe 1997. How bout the D-RABS?
Posted by: BaysBall | November 09, 2007 at 08:56 AM
The new uniforms and logos are really, really bad. They changed for the worst. Maybe they should be the Sunbeams becasue no one will understand the change from sea creature to ray of light. They are getting ready to move. That is the only reason to take the city off the away Jersey. Hopefully they move to Orlando (where I live) and we can get a new uniform and name and leave the past 10 years of misery behind. I'm done with driving 2 hours for a baseball game.
Posted by: AJ III | November 09, 2007 at 09:58 AM
Why all the hoop-la about uniforms? It's the men in them that count and I will support them even if they wore Santa Claus suits. I have around 15 green shirts and I intend to buy new ones to support my team GO RAYS
Posted by: Lorretta Estrella | November 09, 2007 at 10:07 AM
I like the new glint, classic fresh look. It will grow on some over time & it will look alot better with more WINS in them; so all u whiners, i have alot of cheese in the fridge for u and get over it cry babies, because u probably aren't from here anyways and are acting like fake Rays fans. Some of u would conplained & bellyache if u hit the lottery for millions. I'm proud of where I'm from, live, the team & will continue to support them regardless of what any of fakers post. Go RAYS!
Posted by: RayRay | November 09, 2007 at 10:32 AM
As Shakespeare said, "much sound and fury signifying nothing". Last year they brought out new uniforms deleting "Devil" from the jersey and no one said a thing. This year they bring out new uniforms in a carefully orchestrated "event" and they create a firestorm. On the one hand $tu must be pleased with the turnout (7,000 is about what they get for a Blue Jays game in August) and the buzz it created. Quite frankly I'm surprised that many people cared. On the other hand he can't be pleased with the overwhelmingly negative reaction to the new uniforms. And the omission of "Tampa Bay" on the road jerseys will do nothing to dispel the perception that $tu is a carpetbagger bent on bleeding as much profit as possible out of the team without trying to be competitive and then either selling, contracting or moving the franchise. As for the new uniforms themselves, I find them surprisingly bland and lacking any real distinctiveness to set them apart from any other team, unlike the old green ones. I have about 20 Rays game, batting practice, minor league and allstar jerseys but I refuse to shell out money for $tu's jerseys du jour. I had enough trouble holding my nose and paying for season tickets this year. One thing I am curious about from the merchandise salesfest event, how was Kevin Costner's group?
Posted by: Ray of Sunshine | November 09, 2007 at 11:36 AM
In a word: awful. "Tampa Bay Rays" sounds like the greeting Dewayne gave to Raj on What's Happening - "hey hey hey." It's just plain stupid. Thanks so much, Mr. Sternberg, for making us a bigger laughing stock. Stellar job.
Posted by: Nathan | November 09, 2007 at 11:48 AM
What are they trying to say with that "glint". It's an awful design element. It's also one spoke away from looking like a scientology cross or christian cross. Maybe with spiritual power the can overcome being at the bottom of the league...
Posted by: J-Rays | November 09, 2007 at 12:41 PM
Awesome Job, Sternberg!! Perhaps the new uniforms will bring them 50 wins next season! Now that would be something to celebrate!!!
Posted by: Ray | November 09, 2007 at 02:14 PM
Hey Stu. A fashion maven you're not, booby. Okay, getting rid of "devil" appeased the bible bangers but at least keep a fish involved, even if it is gefilte. How about the Tampa Bay Lox? This would be the team that would smoke the opposition. It would also open up all kinds of marketing possibilities at the Trop Food Court. You could offer luxury boxes for seventh inning brises, too. Do anything but put a quality product on the field. L'Chaim!!
Posted by: aggreived | November 09, 2007 at 08:37 PM
Dude...The Tampa Bay Lox would apply because they would be the team getting smoked.

Man oh man some of you people are just sad.
Bobby Fenton did an interview with Mark Fernandez yesterday; there is a high possibility that Tampa Bay will be back on the road uniforms in 2009. It's called establishing the new brand.
Posted by: DRaysBay | November 14, 2007 at 08:45 PM
Its important that the organization is held to that promise. Its imperative that Tampa Bay is indeed restored to the road uniform

I'm gobbling up some new Rays gear this week-end, & will wear it proudly like all of us Rays fans should. It's definitely a new day in sunshiny/future is bright Tampa Bay.
Tampa Bay will be back on the uniforms soon, just relax and enjoy the ride & the Sun.
Posted by: RayRay | November 15, 2007 at 08:43 AM
It better be. I have never made any demands in my life, I really haven't. But this is one area where I won't break on. Bring it back!! Not just for the obvious reasons, but as an incluisve item everyone can jump on and enjoy. It may be back, but I pray and hope they don't "forget" about it!
Posted by: Tim | November 15, 2007 at 07:40 PM
These Rays unis look too much like the Royals. If sternberg wanted to really make a splash and try to sell the an "baseball image" to the Tampa area, he should've considered the St. Pete Saints throwback uniforms the Rays wore once this past season. They were classic (pinstripes, block lettering, navy, etc.) and the flamingo on the sleeve looked pretty cool. But, no, he had to screw it up and come up with the lamest sports mascot idea in the world. Even the "Pancake Syrup Makers" is better than this "ray of light" crap.

Let's dream. First, forget the stadium and the player quality for the moment. What moron is in charge of choosing the new color schemes and logo. "You can call me Jay or you can call me Ray......." The great tragedy of Tampa Bay sports is that the Bucs had the misfortune of winning a super bowl in San Diago. Could there have been an uglier victory cap? Our beloved Blood Crimson Red and Black on a blue, another shade of blue, and gold/yellow. It was ugly. The smart teams are going black, dark reds and marketable colors that people like to wear (Houston, Toronto, Arizona etc.) These people are stupid....."Our little rays of sunshine will light up the baseball world with fear and respect". And we will do it in blue, another color of blue and gold/yellow.
Ok, the stadium. (I will "never" buy a product with the new color scemes/logo)I say build a beautiful new stadium on the water with a retractable dome. Lets enjoy the best of outdoor baseball when it can be comfortable. "The outdoor crack of the bat" for one". And "be kept cool", as DaveP posted. As well as dry, when required.
Now for the team. Who knew Josh Hamilton was going to spend years cracked up in the backroom of a Bradenton Tatoo parlor before being ready. "Rocco"! It was great to yell "Rocco"...the new Yankee Clipper of the South. What a loss if he doesn't come back. And still we have a nucleus of young players that could be built upon if they decide to do it. It won't be cheap. And in fact, the quickest way to a series trophy is to have George get tired of the Yankees letting him down, selling them for the most money by far anyone ever paid for a sports team, buying the Tampa Bay Team (name to be determined)and moving down where the heart of his business empire beats. He could build us a winner in three years that would have such an enormous impact on American history that the entire crew of Seinfeld would reunite to make fun of him again.
Short of this devine intervention we appear to be in for more let downs. Let's face it, if these dumb asses don't have the sense to not choose the ugliest colors available, and don't take fans into consideration when changing team names, they sure as hell won't figure out how to build a team the masses will support and be proud of.
It could have been the Tampa Bay Gypsy Warriers!!!!! Black and red and pewter. Grrrrrr!!!!! not "This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine......"

This "ray of light" stuff is down right sad. I'm not a sexiest or any thing, but it just sounds like a WNBA team name. I guess stu is trying to piss us all of so he can vindicate himself when he moves the team to somewhere else. That St. Pete Saints idea mention earlier, although I think it's a dish on Tampa, is actually not that bad.

It's obvious there are a lot of disgruntled fans out there. What do you suggest to get fans behind the ball club? A complete name change or better designed uniforms? I'm a student with the project to give the Rays a new brand identity and would love any feedback possible!!
