“Tim Beckham @1: Redux

by Kevin Goldstein

Last night the story came out that Posey wanted a truckload of money (still the case), and that the Rays were selecting Tim Beckham (also, still the case). However, to make the assumption that those two things were intertwined was not correct. The Rays are selecting Tim Beckham first overall because after weeks of going over video, statistics, scouting reports, and maybe consulting a few lucky charms, they decided that Tim Beckham was the best overall player available. Sources within the organization have indicated that the organization feels that they could have negotiated with and signed whomever they decided was the best pick in the system regardless of money, and it’s easy to believe, as several talent rankers, including yours truly, have Tim Beckham as the top talent in the draft period, and therefore agree with the pick. There are still plenty of players at the top, including Posey, Aaron Crow and Yonder Alonso making money demands that are effecting certain team’s thinking, and while money changes everything, it doesn’t look like it had any influence on the Rays thinking.”

Alan

This has NOTHING to do with being cheap. Plenty of analysts rate Beckham as the best talent in the draft. It's the right call.

I Hope You're right

Just don't be surprised if you see Posey in pinstripes before you see Beckham at the Trop.

Bill

I disagree. Last year they said the same thing about Price, that he was unsignable..........and the Rays overpaid to get him in and get him in early...

Agreed

This was all about with not wanting to pony up for the 2 best players (Alvarez and Posey).

Reality

Cheap
