Rays rally for 4-2 win over Angels

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Willy Aybar broke an eighth-inning tie with a two-run double, and the Tampa Bay Rays rallied to beat the Los Angeles Angels 4-2 Tuesday night for their ninth victory in 11 games.

The AL East leader overcame a strong pitching performance by Angels starter Ervin Santana, who took a no-hit bid into the sixth and left with a 2-1 lead after allowing one run and four hits in seven innings.

What's with the attendance? 15,000 for a team with the best record in baseball? That's a disgrace.

Good point Dean. They are 1-8 against the Angels and 19-7 against the rest.

I think the East is gearing up to knock the Red Sox down. Cleveland has mad it point to be full strength to play these guys.

9=8 put it perfectly...

This was classic Rays. Bottom line.

Last year, in a game like that, the team would've started preparing for the next day in the 7th. I love the grit of this team. Last year, they had heart. But this year they have heart and grit!!!

I'll be there tonight section 142. Hopefully Rocco gets the call in RF tonight. I'm sure he's itching to get in a game at the Pit.

GO RAYS!!! I'll see you scumbags out tonight!!!

Brian

Is there any question this is Joe's team; this guy is quietly tenacious. When it is time to reflect on the year, we will have to think about his gutsy decisions, standing up to Percy, calling out Crisp from the mound, and last night's argument when he took a chunk out of two knucklehead umpires.

Dean

The Rays now have a better record than the Angels. But, would the Angels have had the best record in the first place if they had had to play a larger number of games against the Rays, Boston and New York or Toronto instead of Seattle, Oakland and Texas?

This game was classic Rays 2008. Great starting pitching (Shield was strong), amazing defense (no errors, awesome catch by Gabe Gross in RF and laser show from BJ in CF) and timely hitting by role player (Willy Aybar's clutch 2R hit in the bottom of the 8th). And, just to top it all off, strong finish by Wheels, striking out 2 of 3 batters faced in the 9th for the save. It's been a little while since the umps tried to rob us (they did it a half dozen time in the first 2 months of the season), but even that popposed up tonight. This game is a micro version of our season. What a game!

Like the legendary Icarus ...

the Angels flew too close to the Rays - and have now plummeted back to earth!!
