Papelbon: It happens
The Red Sox didn't sound too devastated based on the quotes that came out of their clubhouse after last night's loss, courtesy of the Boston Globe:
From closer Jonathan Papelbon, on Dan Johnson's game-tying homer:
"Ball three, strike one, strike two, home run. Pretty simple. You fall behind, 3 and 0, that's not obviously what you want to do. You throw a ball middle belt-high over the plate, 3 and 2, when a hitter's sitting probably fastball, what are you going to do?
"It's part of the game. It's not going to be my first blown save, and it won't be my last. That's going to happen. There's a human factor involved in this thing. We are humans, and we are going to make mistakes. I'm human. I didn't throw the pitch where I wanted tonight."
On the impact of the loss:
"We're going to fight and grind. Especially here at home, it's obviously tough to lose. But we've still got a long season left, we've got a lot of games left, and this one game is not going to determine whether we're going to make the playoffs or whether we're going to be a good playoff team."
From 3B Mike Lowell on the game:
"It shows that they're a very good team. They don't back down. This was a nice win for them. We had such a nice emotional lift after Jason (Bay's) home run. You feel like you have all the confidence in the world with Pap. But Pap's a human being, and that's going to happen."
And there was this perspective from Globe columnist Bob Ryan on Dan Johnson's homer:
"It was a stadium silencer here and it would have been the cause of immense celebration in the Tampa-St. Pete area if only anyone actually cared about baseball down there. Dan Johnson hasn't even been to the Trop as a member of the Tampa Bay Rays yet, but we can safely say those people don't deserve him.''

I just sent a very expressive e-mail to classless sore loser Slob Ryan from the New Beast of The East, so join in Rays Republic & let him know we aren't going to take their smack anymore once & for all, so they better get used to smelling the Rays rear in the standings.
Go Rays!!!!

Send him an email. I am sure he will enjoy them. I am a Tampa native, but I used to live in Boston and it's sad to see how little class people like Bob Ryan, David Ortiz (his silly ball 4 stunt), Coco Crisp, etc actually have. Kind of sad because I love Boston. Nice to see guys like Mike Lowell and Terry Francona show some class, so I'll give some props to those two.
Here is Bob's email address:

I may switch over to the Boston Globe to see what Mr. Ryan has to say about last night's game.

I am an idiot. I am ols and stupid and I poo in my pants. I wear Depends and it is still not enough. I am great friends with Papelb***h. We hold hands and smooch in the moonlight. I am the one that gave Ortiz the name "Big Papi"....because I am his b***h. Actually, I am just a b***h in general. I suck at life and am hopeless.

Lori-
You said it. No two loudmouths I like to see lose more than Papelbon and Martin Brodeur.
Nice to have another lady around here, by the way. I mean, besides Papelbon, of course.

Hey Bob, Hows Brady?
Posted by: Gareth | September 10, 2008 at 07:41 PM
Few things in life give me more pleasure than watching Papelbon blow a save. Pompus jerk, he deserves it.
Posted by: Lori | September 10, 2008 at 06:15 PM
Okay, Bobby..."We don't deserve him" or "You can't afford him and we can?"...
the Price(NPI) has been paid...Home Grown Talent...none of your 5th Avenue Sprees going on in Tampa Bay...
$40m does as $40m allow...
Plant,Water,Weed,Harvest...it works in the big city, too!
Best part we can still see the look on your face when you write like a spoiled glute...
maybe we'll have D.Price here to closeout a Boston home series when our non-deserving get back to the farm.
Do we have anyone in the system named McDonald?

Might have to send Bob Ryan an email asking him how Boston's attendance was back in the 60's? Didn't they only average something like 9,000? Oops!
Posted by: Ray | September 10, 2008 at 05:56 PM
It's not so much that WE deserve Dan Johnson. It's all the pompous jerks in Boston who deserved him just like they deserved Mookie Wilson's ground ball and Bucky Dent's and Aaron Boone's home runs.

Before I start I have been to 20+ games this year and 10-15 games last year.
To be honest with you I rather watch the game at home with a 12-15 dollar 12 pack of Miller Lite vs 5-7 dollar 16oz cup of beer. Plus I watch every game when I am home when they play. Living in Tampa and traveling there with the worest Interstate in the world. Is not my favorite thing to do, but I do make a live baseball game every chance I get.
Just a thought, where would Boston be if they did not have Bay? They do not deserve a player like him!
Go Rays

Whatever happened to "Payback is a B----"?
Now it's "Oh uhhhh, it happens... I'm going to blow some saves sometimes. No biggie."
Looks like Mr. Papelfail has lost a bit of confidence.

Kazmiroholic, here is one you will enjoy:
BOSTON - Her baby, Christopher, then 7 months old, was asleep in his crib. Her husband, Jeff, one of the nonbelievers, had also gone to bed.
Dale Scott, it seemed, would be a witness to history all alone. And that was fine with her. It was Oct. 25, 1986, and her Red Sox were one strike away from winning their first World Series since 1918.
"I was crying with joy," Scott said.
Minutes later, it was over. Bob Stanley had thrown a wild pitch. A ball had gone between Bill Buckner's legs. The Mets scored three runs in the 10th, and the Red Sox had lost again.
She walked into the kitchen where the night's dishes had been washed and stacked. Scott was flinging pots when her husband came running.
"He kept saying it was just a game. That the baby was going to cry. I said, "You don't get it, do you?"' Scott recalled. "I said, "It's okay if the baby cries. He'll be a Red Sox fan, he might as well learn now."
The Curse Of The Bambino is alive and well in St Pete, after all, he played here many times. His ghost is leering at the pretty girls on the beach during the day, and haunting the Red Sox at the Trop at night.

It's hard to know by watching the game just on an old computer, but wasn't CooCoo Puff the last out?
Think that game was a direct pitch at the whole Red Sox team, we beaned them in Beantown.
GO RAYS

F*** Y**, Bob Ryan
Posted by: DIZ | September 10, 2008 at 01:31 PM
I usually like Bob Ryan but that was just a stupid thing to say. Why ruin a great game with a stupid thing like that. I hope they get swept by Toronto.
Posted by: Bob Ryan | September 10, 2008 at 01:10 PM
What a class act Mike Lowell is.
This was a great game and one we needed. I can't wait to see Boston at the Trop, I hope we sweep them.

"if only anyone actually cared about baseball down there."
We care, TV ratings are up, right? Doesn't that count for something?
The attendence discussion needs to be put to rest till the end of the season. If the playoffs don't sell out, then yes, bash us. Don't let this attendence bs take away from a great season.
Posted by: Fuber | September 10, 2008 at 12:50 PM
... Bob Ryan is an a**hole
He is not even worthy of this statement
(but I do feel much better having said it)
Posted by: Rich | September 10, 2008 at 12:25 PM
joeknowsbaseball: I believe it 18 for the division/ 12 for the wild card
Posted by: Mike | September 10, 2008 at 12:17 PM
I don't know which is better, The Rays greatest win ever, or Papela$$ getting shelled by a pack of minor leaguers for a blown save. It was a thing of beauty. And as far as Bob Ryan goes, let him slander the Rays fans. As long as we win, he can write whatever he wants.
Posted by: Mike | September 10, 2008 at 12:16 PM
Did you see the look on Humanoid Papeldebunk's face?
Priceless!
Anyone know what the Rays' magic number is today?
Posted by: joeknowsbaseball | September 10, 2008 at 12:10 PM
another side note:
The last line says "...those people don't deserve him."
The guy hits one home run and all of a sudden it's like we have Lou Gehrig playing his heart out in a wheel chair hooked up to an iron lung struggling to round the bases. Gimme a break!
Deserve what??? A guy who wouldn't be in the bigs if we didn't have 4 key players sidelined? How lucky we are!
He came through big, but I would rather have a healthy CC, Longo, BJ, and Riggins in the lineup.
Maybe Mr. Ryan should question the Red Sux front offices decision to pass on him along with 30 other teams when he was on waivers. Sore Loser!
Posted by: Ray F | September 10, 2008 at 12:04 PM
All this garbage about the area not deserving the team due to a lack of attendance on specific games would lead to the following conclusion: NY doesn't deserve the Yankees. Lou Gehrig hit his last home run at Yankee stadium in front of fewer than 3,000 people. Based on that game's poor attendance, the Yankees should move to Portland. They'd obviously have been better off over the last 60 plus years. That's the type of tortured logic morons have to use to justify a statement like that.
Posted by: cak | September 10, 2008 at 11:13 AM
so the basic jist of the article was... THE RED SUX LOST!!! Deal with it Boston Globe. It may not happen again tonight. It may not happen next week at The Trop, but last night the Red Sux lost.
Maybe Bob Ryan doesn't realize that attendance is up 30% at the Trop this year and will be up next year as well because of our success.
To Mr. Ryan I say: "Second place must be tough on you to insult an entire region of the country, huh?"
Posted by: Ray F | September 10, 2008 at 11:11 AM
Note to Bob Ryan: Nobody outside of Bah-ston gives a rat's *** what you think.
Posted by: Tony | September 10, 2008 at 11:09 AM
And Bob Ryan once again proves he's a complete tool. I hope the Jays catch them so he can cry and write about how baseball is worse now that the Sox and the Yanks are out on the golf course instead of playing October baseball.
It won't happen, but it would be nice.
