Fan arrested at Trop for trying to hop Rays dugout

Fan
[JAMES BORCHUCK | Times]

Christopher Sciesinski, 33, of Sarasota was arrested on a disorderly conduct charge Wednesday night after he tried to jump over the Rays dugout onto the field, said Sgt. Karl Lounge of the St. Petersburg Police. Security staff and police had received complaints about Sciesinski earlier in the game. Officer Patrick McGovern pulled out a Taser gun, Lounge said.

"The Taser itself was never discharged," Lounge said.

Later, Sciesinski's friend Robert Mansour, 37 of Sarasota, was arrested on a disorderly intoxication charge. He started a fight with another fan, Lounge said.

Police said Sciesinski is a Red Sox fan.

When Sciesinski was apprehended on the top of the Rays dugout, the game stopped -- and both the Rays and Red Sox took notice.

"He got tattooed," Red Sox slugger David Ortiz said. "Holy God, that was a big dude, man. He had a lot of policemen all over him. …

"When you come to baseball games, it's something you’re supposed to enjoy. You don’t want to be acting stupid. You got kids around and things like that, so you want to make sure you behave."

Where were all these so called Rays fans at last year and 8 years before that? Boston fans are loyal to there team win or lose.
Are you loyal or will the place be empty again next year?
Check your attendance for the last ten years compared to Fenway!!!!!!!! nuff said

The Shocker

screw him ... he's a drugged up redsox fan that resisted arrest and could have, for all we know, had a plan to go into the dugout and hurt someone

to hell with his "rights" ... he lost those when he violently resisted arrest

they should have rodney king'd him!

Amanda

Shocked-
First of all, I hope you realize the really bad pun in your name when your comment is about a taser..
Second, I wasn't at the game when this happened. I had family there, though, sitting in the next section over. According to them, they said they wouldn't be surprised if this guy was on some sort of drugs, because his strength in throwing the cops off of him either two or three times (don't remember, sorry) was amazing. He just sort of tossed them aside, which is when he lunged towards the field. Could the cops have felt that someone was in imminent danger? Yes, it's definitely possible. Especially if he's fighting, impervious to strong-arm takedowns, and suddenly rushing towards the players on the field.
Again, though, I wasn't there myself, so I can't vouch for anything. This is just what I heard from a couple of family members who were there.

Shocked

The fact is Red Soxs fan or Rays fan the law is clear that an officer cannot aim their taser at the neck and head. The photo clearly show the officer doing it. Was he punished? NO! Should he been? YES! The law is the law unless you are the law! Officers should not be placed above the law and this is happening far to much across our country. The officers look at it as us and them. If we don't punish these offences there is no point in having laws correct? Was it truly needed after four or five guys already had the man under control? No Was anyone in imminent danger I doubt it. Maybe if they removed the sale of beer at the parks it would be more enjoyable and the true fans that prefer not to drink or be around drinks will go.

Matt:

You're silly and really don't know what you're talking about when it comes to baseball. The Rays have, far and away, the worst fanbase in MLB. Enjoy your little run while it lasts.

One and done.

CJ

Kudos, Amanda, for having some class and not getting sucked into this ridiculous rage... honestly... EVERY team in EVERY sport has "fake" fans, bandwagoners, diehards and yes, unfortunately those few obnoxious, arrogant fools that give a town & team a reputation as such. As a Sox lifer, I have been to games all over the country, where there has been a large contingency of Sox fans. Pre-2004, as an underdog, there were fans everywhere rooting for us, much like they do for the Cubs. As a visiting fan, I respect the home team and their fans, and would hope all others would do the same. Especially because baseball is a game where parents should feel safe & comfortable taking their children to a ballpark as they grow up to love the team too. I live in a city with no professional sports teams, so I travel wherever I have to to enjoy a Red Sox game. For the most part, I am treated respectfully by opposing fans, and enjoy talking with them and hearing their stories. There is nothing wrong with being a devoted, passionate fan. There is DEFINITELY something wrong with being rude, condescending and offensive in defense of your team. Not to mention what a bad example it sets for kids who are learning to act just like we are. And for what its worth, I appreciate what a young team like the Rays have done, whether I like them or not. Especially in this day and age where payrolls are OUT OF CONTROL and there are too many prima donnas getting paid millions just to let their teammates and fans down, year after year. I will always be a diehard Sox fan, but I appreciate GOOD baseball and wish I had grown up in the 50's when baseball was pure, before it became a big business and tainted by the steroid era. Congratulations Rays and Rays fans who have some semblence of class and can win like a true champion should.

EDM

All these posts are completely ludicrous! You Rays fans have ONE winning season and suddenly MLB is supposed to respect you?!?!? You say the Sox have only won 7 WS in 100 tries...how many winning seasons do you have. So YES we are comparing apples to oranges...TB is "enjoying' their first winning season and is still being upstaged by Red Sox Nation and the Yankees. You still don't get any respect and in spite of the fact that you can't go to the WS (you aren't good enough) you need to just settle back and watch how the big boys do it! Nice though that you had the stones to take on the Sox fans with such a show of force on this post...too bad you can't find a few more fans to fill in the front rows of the Trop so all the world won't see what a bunch of bandwagoners ALL OF YOU really are. Hope you do take the division so you have something to show for the season...cuz that's as far as you are going. White Sox are going to hand it to you (or the Angels if that be the case!) Welcome to the post season...it ain't as easy as it looks and you pansies in Fla don't have a clue. Hell, without the northerners visiting down there, you wouldn't have enuf $$$ to have a field or a team so kiss our butts for giving you what life you do have you arrogant, selfless retards.

Jerod

the greater majority of Rays fans on here really have zero clue as to what they are talking about when it comes down to the red sox and their fan base. if you dont want karma kicking your team out of the playoffs, then i suggest you play nice. whats even funnier to me is how mean we can all be to one another. we're all human folks, and after all it is just a game :)

REDSOXPORVIDA

if the World Series comes down to who deserves to win it, it's gonna be the Cubs. Good job to the Rays so far, but you haven't won anything yet. trash talk should be held for when your biggest opponent is out of the way. and guess what, we're still nipping at you.

Rich

"Parents who are stuck in their pasts forcing their children to be what they never could."

i think most parents would want their children to be what we could never be. but i dont think being a baseball fan of my team qualifies as soemthing i could never be.

Jimbo

And that mentality right there, Rich, is why there's no Rays fan base. Parents who are stuck in their pasts forcing their children to be what they never could. Your kind makes me both nauseous for the present, and fear for the future.

So, people like you can only blame yourselves, not the fans like me, for the lack of sell outs. And people like you can only blame yourselves when you (improbably) get your wish the Rays leave, forcing you to go to the nearest AL stadium, Arlington, TX, to see your precious Red Sox or Yankees. Good thinking!

Rich

"Vagrant, stop forcing your childhood team on your kids. Let them be free thinkers and choose for themselves"

i would probably slaughter my children before i raise them rays fans...besides, what would i tell them when the team makes the inevitable move to a differnet city?

Jimbo

Me? I've extremely respectful, until you treat me like crap. Then, expect the same in return.

And taking the game personally? I come from the Northeast myself, and I know for a fact that NY and Boston takes their sports way too seriously, too. It's called passion, and I'm glad to see there's passion finally in the Trop. Just because it's the passion you're not used to makes it wrong.

Vagrant, stop forcing your childhood team on your kids. Let them be free thinkers and choose for themselves. My kids can choose whoever they would like to root for, even if it's a team that I don't like. Baseball is an extremely family-friendly sport (the most of all the majors), and I highly encourage you to bring your kids. And use the pic that started this whole debacle of a thread as a life lesson for them: "If you treat anyone in a disrespectful manner, there will be consequences to your actions. This is why you should always respect people's differences, no matter what. But, if they get physical with you, you have every right to defend yourself."

Trust me, this is an isolated incident caused by a drunk, arrogant fool. Just don't act like the above guy with your kids around, because they learn by example.

Craig

Yes, we take it so seriously that we feel compelled to write novel-length posts on another teams blog all about ME ME ME

Keep 'em coming guys, I am truly amused at this point. And p.s. you know nothing about me or what I take seriously, but whatever makes you feel better. Maybe I'm just bored this morning. hmmmm

*hands RSS a yummy banana*

Red Sox South

This is what I mean when I say Rays fan take this game personally instead of just have fun with it.

Thanks Vagrant you are so right

Vagrant

My money is on Meth Lab. Def. Meth Lab.

Vagrant

and with the awesome education system of Florida and the South in general, i'm surprised half these people can even read.

Rich

Craig- whats you line of work- alligator wrestler, or do you run an illegal meth lab. its got to be one or the other...

Vagrant

and Jimbo

if you're sick of being treated like a third class citizen, then present yourself better. I have a tendency to call them as I see them. Respect works 2 ways.

Craig

But I didn't read it, and I don't plan to, either. Keep typing though, you dancing monkey. HA HAAAA

GO RAYS!

vagrant

Being a Sox fan living in the Bay area, i can honestly say that I will NEVER go to another game at the Trop, much less a Rays-Sox game again, unless I have no kids that night and enough money saved up for bail. People can talk about Sox fans all they want but I have never seen ANYONE at Fenway yell and curse out a whole family, kids included, supporting the opposing team. As much as we may maybe labeled as "massholes" etc. etc. I would rather be a respectful person than a drunk, redneck, fair-weather fan with a cow bell.

Jimbo

You're telling US to stop insulting, fighting, and being sarcastic? How about the last 10 years in the Trop when 3/4 of the "fans" were wearing Red Sox or Yankees colors and the home team fans, like myself, would be booed and harassed in MY OWN STADIUM for wearing then-Devil Rays colors? How about the fights that would constantly break out at those games when HOME TEAM fans were trying to defend themselves from jerks who decided because they were losing they needed to punch someone, cause they should "never lose to the likes of you"? Or, how about the people, dressed in all red or pinstripes, who, if even talked to by a "lowly" D-Rays fan, would be nothing but condescending and inconsiderate?

We're tired of being bullied and pushed around in our own stadium. We're tired of being treated like we're 3rd Class citizens when we walk into our dome (which you guys hate, BTW, don't forget that, but you act like you run the joint). We now have the team to back up our own defense. But most importantly of all, until this year, very few Red Sox and Yankees games have been sold out, meaning that not even the AWAY TEAM'S fans wanted to show up, let alone the Rays'.

So, I'm sorry the red carpet isn't rolled out and rose petals thrown at your feet anymore. I'm sorry that Rays fans aren't accommodating your every beckon call. And I'm sorry that you yourself may not fall into this class, but your "brethren" have made every single person in this area hate you so for the decade of abuse we've taken. We're now going to stand up and not take it anymore.

If a Sox fan (which has happened this year) attacks me, I will defend myself as needed, and I will have help this time. If a Yankees fan make a snide remark at me, I will retort and they made not like it. And if anyone says we don't deserve a team to my face, I will explain the reasons why we do (as I have here numerous times), or I will ignore them, because they apparently know nothing of baseball (like Dave, who demanded that we be more knowledgeable "before you run your mouth" but thought the 1919 Black Sox Scandal cancelled the 1904 World Series) and don't deserve a response.

Welcome to The Pit, where you will only be welcomed if you're wearing Blue and Gold, or you have the manners of a civilized human being. Otherwise, be prepared to be treated like we've been treated for the last 10 years. If our words don't change your tone, maybe some of your own medicine will!

Red Sox South

Hey Craig;

No I rather you read it, is always nice to talk to Fans like yourself with no respect to others plus last time I check I didn’t have to log in with a special Rays fans password to post my blog here, …………………… that’s the good thing about living in the USA, freedom of speech anywhere baby.

Love Red Sox South

Craig

um, yeah it's a RAYS BLOG durrrrrr

try boston.com - I'm sure they'll love to read your 10,000 word dissertation about yourself there. LOL indeed

Red Sox South

Hey Craig obviously you do care if not you wouldn’t be reading and responding to these blogs …………………….LOL

Craig

blah blah blah...

Nobody cares!

HEY JIMBO

My point exactly, we live in Tampa not Boston, so even us Boston fan should have a very hard time trying to get tickets living here in you town but because there is no support from this town is easy to get tickets. I go to EVERY SINGLE RED SOX vs TAMPA game and is so easy to find tickets. Maybe you are one of the few true Rays fan, and the reason why us Red Sox Nation comment the way we do is cause you guys seem to be doing good for one year and are acting like if you have won the World Series and trying to make us look like if we are a new team who just started playing baseball. Most of you Rays fans don’t know how to act and that’s what this blog is all about. Remember is just a game and Red Sox, Yankees & Rays are always going to battle to get first place every year but we can’t win them all. This year the Rays are doing great, enjoy it instead of trying to put every one else down. My point is that people rag on us because we have passion and love this game, 1918 was the last time we won before winning in 2004 we were supporting our team back to back and we stuck there every game. And let me remind you this, incase you are not to familiar with baseball history:

Red Sox was founded in 1901
We have won 7 World Serious and still hold the Championship until the end of this season.
We have been there and done that, we have been supporting our team through thick and thin in good and bad, we will fly from Boston to any state to support our team.

My friends and family fly down here to see the Sox cause is easier to get tickets here than in Boston so that should tell you something. And regarding your number to chew on, great I am glad you are doing good, and you should also, you fans are giving a bad name to the team by acting the way you guys do when you win a game. By insulting, fighting, being sarcastic and talking bad about other teams after a game is not going to make you look good. Remember is not over till October.

My point is that you should enjoy the game, be glad that you have come back from the bottom and are fighting your way up to the top, support your team and top being so rude to other fans just cause we have history.

Craig

Gotta love the self-important sox fans, still on the Rays blog days after their team got whooped and left with their tails between their legs, sitting there demanding answers. HA HAAA

The answer to all your questions is BITE ME.

Jimbo

I was there, Red South South, and have been for about 37 games this year. What about you? Where were you Monday night when only 27K showed up? If the RSN's so strong, why weren't all those empty seats bought out by the "throngs" that are "die-hard" Red Sox "fans"?

C'mon, this is a two-way argument, and all it does is make both sides look stupid. Our attendance is officially better than any season we've had in our 10-year history (save the first year, since it was new and exciting, see here: http://www.tampabay.com/sports/baseball/rays/article817525.ece ), which is an increase of more than 33% than last year, and considering we've just started having a winning team after 10-years, I think that's an accomplishment unto itself. No team is moving anywhere anytime soon (except to a new stadium?), and the only way to get more fans is to win; be honest, no one like a loser. Every single team, except the Rays, have ended their season at one point or another with a winning (.500+) season, so once we end this season, more people will realize they're for real and hop on board for next year.

So, enough with this. The people saying we're going to move are the people who are afraid of us in this division: ESPN, the Red Sox, Yankees, Blue Jays, and Orioles fans. Hasn't anyone thought about that? What do they have to gain if we move? An easier road to a division pennant (or, in ESPN, better rating since the Red Sox and Yankees bring more money to them). So, their argument is extremely biased and not warranting any further explanation or comment. We all know things are improving by leaps and bounds. Why do we, have Tampa Bay Rays fans, continue to feel the need to defend our improvements? The numbers (W/L, ERA, attendance, etc.) show we're better than last year, and the decade before that. Let's let our numbers do the talking for us, instead of getting into shouting matches with imbeciles.

And here's a numbers to chew on:
90-61 - best record, by 20 wins, we've ever had, and the season's still going
3 - Magic Number to make the playoffs
10 - Magic Number to take the East
9=8 - enough said....

GO RAYS!!!

Red South South

By the way what happen to all your so call true Rays fans last night when you played the Twins....... all of a sudden you can see plenty of empty seats and then you dare to say Red Sox fans are fake???? Again you all jump on the wagon just cause is moving, and again do remember it’s not over yet, oh and yes to those Rays fans who didn't see the game last night (bandwagons) they lost.

Mike

You guys get a winning season and all of a sudden you care about baseball. It isn't about attendance, it's about you Tampa fans pretending to care now that your team does well.

We will be in the playoffs one way or another, and we will see what happens. No doubt that both of these teams are good. But we will see.

Jimbo

Hey Dave...the Black Sox scandal had nothing to do with the 1904 WS being cancelled. It was the arrogant owner and managers of the NY Giants that felt they were far superior to the upstart American League teams that they just refused to play.

The Black Sox scandal was about 15 years later.

How's that for "Tampa" stupidity?

Red Sox South

My response to these Rays fan posting in this site is this:

You guys instead of ragging “GOOD TEAMS” who have history marked in the history of baseball since the beginning of last century and have several Championships under their belts and start supporting your home team like you should maybe there wouldn’t be so many of you jumping the wagon just cause is moving in the state of Tampa. In the game of baseball is all about winning and losing, and finding out who is the best, and yes I do admit the Rays are doing GREAT this year and you guys should be proud instead of trying to put other teams down to make you feel better. But I do understand this is your first time tasting a bit of what you thing is victory so you don’t know how to act. Remember we don’t get not even 1 penny from the Red Sox, Yankees or Rays players instead we are the one putting our hard working money to by tickets to support them, but then again Tampa fans don’t even do that, it is sad that it takes the Red Sox and the Yankees to come to town so the Trops can get sold out. And to the Rays fan who said all of us Red Sox should go back to Boston to our rat infested city all I have to say is that if it wasn’t for all these Red Sox fan here down south, you wouldn’t be able to sold out your so call Stadium. I welcome you to Fenway and see what a real baseball field looks and feels like.

Sox On Baby

sjn

Who cares if he is a Red Sox fan? Bottom line is he is an adult that was out of control and got what he deserved. So many people have stated "go home sox fans" isn't it part of the "game" to have fans from both teams there? Show some respect for each other for pete's sake. It's a game people - get fired up about something that matters and will make a positive difference in your life.

harold

The thing I find so lauhable is that these so called Boston Fans are nothing like the majority of Boston Fans I know. The Real Fans lived through the years of being second to the Yankees. THese obnoxious types calling themselves "Fans" act as if they actually took part in the games . As if they swung a bat. They Think that Since Boston won a championship that somehow that make them champions.
Since the Sox are second to the Rays this year they feel like that make them second rate. I have known many Boston Fans and they understand what its like to be disappointed by your team. These other people? These loudmouth, in your face obscenity filled "fans". They have always been second rate. All you have to do is listen to them . THey cant wait to tell you how pathetic they are. Never confuse these loudmouth obscene punks with real Boston Fans. A Real Boston Fan remembers the years of agony before the recent sucess. The media and these bandwagon fans can only talk about the attendance because they have too much of their own self worth invested in the Red Sox winning.
THese Poster talking about the Rays are gonna move , THe fans don't deserve Blah blah blah. The Fact is that the fans didn't deserve to be treated to a losing team with an anti fan owner for the past ten years. Thats what they didnt deserve. These scars will heal. The fanbase is growing. Ignore the Media hype and the obscenities of the wannabee "Nation" Talk to a longtime Boston fan and you can get a more accurate portrayal. Not somebody that became a fan in 2004.
And not somebody that gets their drink on and screams obscenities into the faces and ears of children.

dave

tampa's terrible, youre dumb. sox won the very first world series, and would have won the second if not for the black sox scandal. know your stuff before you run your mouth :)

Amanda

Jen-
We'll convert you... just you wait! ;)
Regarding the announcers, I assume you're referring to the television ones (the radio guys are outstanding).
Those tv guys... I don't know. Dewayne Staats has been doing play-by-play for over 30 years now. I think he's pretty darn good. I hope this doesn't sound horrible, but I just don't think he's ever been the same since his wife passed in 2005. I know he's remarried and from all accounts I hear he's happy, but it just seems like he never got his announcing "spark" back.
Joe Magrane? Apparently some people out there think he's worthwhile, since he was invited to do analysis for NBC during the Beijing Olympics. I just don't get him. He can be amusing at times, but I just find him annoying. Loyalty is a trait to be commended, but his loyalty has crossed over into homer-ism (I like that. Trademark pending).
I think the best move would be to let Magrane move on to other opportunities and get a new guy for Staats to work with, someone who will get him back to his old form.

Jen

I LOVE the Red Sox. This is my first baseball season away from RI and the Sox. Although I miss them dearly, I have been watching the Rays games. Why, you ask? Because I love the game of baseball. It has been a great season, and the Rays are a story of hope. However, I must comment on the Rays announcers. Do they understand baseball at all? They never talk about how the game itself is played. I have truly been spoiled by the knowlege of Jerry Remy & Don Orsillo. They make each game as unique as the Sox. Best of luck to both teams...

bunkerhill

This new sox/rays rivalry is great, hope it lasts past Octoba. No matta whaatt, anotha great paat of this Septemba we can all root fa - the Yankees vs. Jays in the race for 3rd, go Jays!

Holy Soxfan

Did some MORON suggest BJ Upton was on roids? Wow. That has to be the dumbest thing ever typed on any device that allows for typing.

wow all these rays fans on here running their mouths about boston fans running their mouths. little hypocritical ya think????? and typical too. btw your welcome for filling your stadium and the revenue sharing.

jimmy

Loooove hearing Upton's name come up on Sportscenter!! His highlights are funny as hell! Heckuva ballplayer but MAN, what a flake!

Joe Dunn

I think I will move up north and root against the home team..... Except for retirees, most you knuckleheads who moved here couldn't make it up north. If you don't like it here.... GO BACK!!!

Red Sox Fan

Carl Crawford is garbage and BJ Upton was a fluke, the Red Sox loss of two HR hitters in Bay and Drew is bigger impact.

LOL @ Rays fan overvaluing a guy with a career .330 OBP LMAO.

BJ Upton? yeah one good year, uh huh uh huh. enjoy the roids?

even without manny, the red sox are still the AL East cream of crop. i'lll love that al east title.

DLOL

Rays lost. Panic time in Tampa!

jimmy

Was Jonny Gomes even at the park last night? I figured that once security had that dude pinned down with a choke hold that Jonny would jump in and start pounding away!
