Fan arrested at Trop for trying to hop Rays dugout

[JAMES BORCHUCK | Times]
Christopher Sciesinski, 33, of Sarasota was arrested on a disorderly conduct charge Wednesday night after he tried to jump over the Rays dugout onto the field, said Sgt. Karl Lounge of the St. Petersburg Police. Security staff and police had received complaints about Sciesinski earlier in the game. Officer Patrick McGovern pulled out a Taser gun, Lounge said.
"The Taser itself was never discharged," Lounge said.
Later, Sciesinski's friend Robert Mansour, 37 of Sarasota, was arrested on a disorderly intoxication charge. He started a fight with another fan, Lounge said.
Police said Sciesinski is a Red Sox fan.
When Sciesinski was apprehended on the top of the Rays dugout, the game stopped -- and both the Rays and Red Sox took notice.
"He got tattooed," Red Sox slugger David Ortiz said. "Holy God, that was a big dude, man. He had a lot of policemen all over him. …

I've been a fan since 1998. I have had the good fortune to see the Rays in 5 different stadiums. Everytime I go there I get into a great conversation with fans from other teams. Sure there's a little ribbing, but it is just baseball. The problem is, the only place that I get treated rudely (and it's rare) was at the Trop by fans of Yanks and Sox. Many times it isn't the fact that they are being rude to me, it's that it is so frustrating to hear "let's go Yankees" or "let's go red sox" coming from people who live here. Maybe the fans on here are being jerks, but we have put up with it for a long long time here in Tampa.
Hey I love the rivalry. I have in- laws that live up in New Hampshire and when I visited there, I wore Rays shirts everyday. and while I was there, no one was a jerk to me.
Why is attendance such a huge issue? I don't understand Red Sox fans on here making fun of us because of our attendance and then calling people bandwagon fans when new people show up at the ballpark. What does that mean? We should be filling up the park but only with people who have been fans for years?
baseball-reference.com is a great resource, but having been to the Trop for 11 straight years now, it is a die hard fact that before 2004, Red Sox fans never came out in such force as they do now. It simply didn't happen. The Yankee fans always came out to the ballpark better than Sox fans.

I think if some of both the red sox AND rays players saw some of these posts, they'd be embarassed of their own fanbase. This is America's pastime..both teams are doing great things into September..I think the sox fans are sitting on their WS a little too hard (btw, Im a sox fan) to see the rays are making amazing progress this year..and on the flipside I think the rays fans may be getting a little too sure of themselves as well..It's not even the playoffs..lets discuss in 10 days or so...then..after the division is won..lets talk playoffs..then..WS..because at the end of the day..if either team doesn't come home with a ring..then all we can argue is who's the best of the losers..

Can someone tell me what the headline on that page says?
For those who don't want to step foot on the Herald Sports site the headline reads:
"Sox can Forget About Another AL East Title"
Looks like your own newspaper has given up on you, maybe you should go complain on their website.

first off, go rays, you're right. secondly, as a sox fan from clear across the country in ca, and NOT a bandwagoner, thanks, just wanna say that a lot of the ish talkers on here are giving rays/soxs fans a bad wrap. i mean come on guys, both these teams are working hard to get where we all want to be in october. can't we all just sit back, crack a beer and thank god none of us are yankee fans! either way, see you in october :)

... I agree that some Sox fans are obnoxious and I've been one since 1970. But I'll bet this guy isn't nearly as obnoxious as that loud-mouthed heckler Rob Szasz. Unfortunately, there was a grandstand mike near him last night and I had to listen to his inanity the whole game--it just exacerbated the beating the Sox took.
I was at the Trop a few years ago and it was "Happy Heckler Night." Szasz bounced one in front of the plate and got booed mercilessly. A fine moment...

I met a Red Sox fan last night at the game who was insisting that both of their championships in '04 and '07 came from wild card spot. I told them that Sox won AL east last year holding off Yanks. He told me to look it up and when Sox play Rays in ALCS that I will have to tell him he was right. Ok Sox fans, you know your history even if it was less than 12 months ago? Ant Sox fans want to chime in?
Posted by: Go RAYS | September 18, 2008 at 05:29 PM
(Thanks for the kind words, guys)
Look, I'm anticipating a great rivalry between these two teams for a long time. Hopefully neither one of us falls off (don't really see that happening, but I'm an optimist), and it can be neck-and-neck for years to come.
I just want to keep it classy. Debate? Hell yes. Heckle a bit? Of course! It's baseball, right?
The personal attacks on both sides just piss me off. I'm talking about Rays and Sox fans alike here. (On a side note, do I feel as though Rays fans have been provoked into it due to way we've been spat on over the past 10 years? Yeah, but I'm a Rays fan, so I might be biased. You know, just a little) If it's not baseball related, give it up. And no, attendance is not really baseball related.
Here's my general rule of thumb: Don't say anything a Yankee fan might say. It's like a reverse WWJD.
Wish I could be at the game tonight, but I have a night class. See you guys tomorrow, though!
Posted by: Amanda | September 18, 2008 at 05:14 PM
Didn't the plane leave for Kansas last night?
Or, did you guys forget to take Toto after that game last night?
Genius may have been too strong, too soon!
Got to go or I'll be in Rays traffic for hours...

Duffiedawg, thanks so much for sharing that. I got a good laugh and also thought about how true that is!! :) I just love the game of baseball and the Red Sox, win or lose. Of course winning is more fun but either way! I was actually disappointed when the Sox beat the Rays by so much the first game because it was a blowout. Loved the second game because it was so close and exciting! The third, it felt just like the first to me, only a little more sour due to our loss. ;) Good luck to your Rays!
Posted by: Mel | September 18, 2008 at 04:41 PM
Mel, (BoSox Fan), I agree with you, Amanda is a class act, and from her posts, knows and loves baseball also.
I have to share the following with you, as a BoSox fan, I think you will appreciate (I am a Rays fan in S. GA):
BOSTON - Her baby, Christopher, then 7 months old, was asleep in his crib. Her husband, Jeff, one of the nonbelievers, had also gone to bed.
Dale Scott, it seemed, would be a witness to history all alone. And that was fine with her. It was Oct. 25, 1986, and her Red Sox were one strike away from winning their first World Series since 1918.
"I was crying with joy," Scott said.
Minutes later, it was over. Bob Stanley had thrown a wild pitch. A ball had gone between Bill Buckner's legs. The Mets scored three runs in the 10th, and the Red Sox had lost again.
She walked into the kitchen where the night's dishes had been washed and stacked. Scott was flinging pots when her husband came running.
"He kept saying it was just a game. That the baby was going to cry. I said, "You don't get it, do you?"' Scott recalled. "I said, "It's okay if the baby cries. He'll be a Red Sox fan, he might as well learn now."
This has been an incredible season for the Rays, and the rivalry has only been marred by the actions of Coco Crisp (Coocoo Puff to us Rays Fans). Some of the best baseball in many years have been shared by fans of oth teams.
Posted by: Duffiedawg | September 18, 2008 at 04:24 PM
I hope so, Scott G. And then I hope the Sox unleash their guns and show no mercy! Unfortunately, those pesky Angels leave me just a little concerned.

SO TYPICAL, Red Sox fan FROM Sarasota, not Boston! Probably never even been to Boston or Fenway. LOL. I am a Rays fan but at least I have been to Fenway. The police had to do what they did you never know what this idiot was going to do, maybe try to hurt a player? Why do people have to be so stupid? Typical bandwagon Boston fan. GO HOME WHITE TRASH
Posted by: Stephanie | September 18, 2008 at 04:03 PM
Bigsoxfan - I agree with acting like genlemen. A little banter is fun and pretty much expected, but no need for our fans insulting each other.
See you in the ALCS!
Posted by: Scott G | September 18, 2008 at 04:02 PM
Hey Scott G.
This wasn't insulting to you though, right? I thought of that statement as a joke, or more like, I like the Ray's talent, but I'm still a Sox fan. Of course I don't want to see any team but mine win it all.
You see, 2003 hurt me big time. I was too young to really understand 86. Your team is tasting some success. If you lose after all this, it will hurt. 2004 was huge redemption. All was forgotten. Welcome to the AL East Rivalry (but let us all be gentlemen about it).

It's not just here in Tampa.
These guys go to a game to get drunk and try to get on television. They don't go to watch the game.
The less said about these jerks, the better.

Bigsoxfan - You had a nice post until you threw in "Just don't come crying to papa if the Rays choke in 3 games in the ALDS."
That's a week jab at the Rays. We could turn it around and say the Red Sox choked the in the last 2 series against the Rays, losing 4 of 6 with 1st place on the line.
Anyway whatever happens with the Rays in the playoffs it's a great season and the Rays are stacked with talent to be in this situation for the next several years.

Wow, sorry to see the lame fans on both sides. I'm a huge Red Sox fan, but respect the talent that the Rays have. Sort of reminds me of last year's Red Sox (heh, same team this year!).
Sox had a bad night, but overall they've been playing better as the weeks roll along. They look to be a threat in the playoffs.
Devil Rays fans...er...Rays fans, it is good to be excited about your team. Just don't come crying to papa if the Rays choke in 3 games in the ALDS.
As for those "Red Sox" fans. We usually respect good teams. This is why historically we were called "The smartest fans in baseball". Sadly, as the bandwagon occurred the last few years, we have a bunch of unintelligent baseball fans (football fans) giving us a bad name. Grow up.

Amanda-You are one of the poster on this whole board that ever has something nice to say and can make your point without being rude. I am a Sox fan from New England. Yes, I moved down here but the reasons have nothing to do with baseball. But because I moved here does not mean that I have to give up supporting a team that I have followed my whole life...one that my Mom followed and her Dad followed and his Dad. And you are right, I have posted on this topic numerous times and I am a respectful Red Sox fan that never says anything negative about other fans. I always sit here and say when the Rays have a great game and beat us..."Nice game". But all these other Sox fans that are just so sh*tty and negative do ruin it for us. Because then I have to sit here are read all this crap that we are all the same, which is not true. Can't anyone just sit and let people be a fan of who they want to be a fan of without telling them to move back or that we ALL suck? Seriously. Anyway, Amanda, thanks for your insight on everything and keep up with the respectful posts. Because I am starting to lose respect for Rays fans because of all this so it is nice to know that there is a Rays fan that understands. Good luck with the rest of your season. October should be tons of fun and excitement!
Posted by: Mel | September 18, 2008 at 03:26 PM
Uhhh, I feel bad because my team lost to yours so I'm going to uhhh, pull my trump card and insult your attendence. And if that don't work, then... then... Your team is gonna suck next year, even though they are stacked with signed talent under 25, that's the ticket. Go SAWKS. I feel like a much more complete person now, sometimes trolling blogs in my parents basement is the coolest!

Red Sox Fan
You have no business talking about injuries. 2/3 of our outfield, sometimes the entire outfield, was in AAA a month ago, and we took 4 of 6 from you. Not only that, we lost Longoria for more than a month. Remember Dan Johnson??? He was in Durham the day before he took Papelbon yard!
Of course our AAA can't compare to your AAAA(?). Where did you get the extra A? Must be you guys are just so superior!
Posted by: M | September 18, 2008 at 02:50 PM
Red Sox Fan- yes you are missing Bay and Drew but we were missing CC and BJ. Further, we have been missing those two guys plus our Superstar 3rd baseman for a month and have kept pace with you. So dont bring that injury crap into the discussion. You are the deeper higher financed team and we have overcome all the injuries to still be ahead of you.

What's so bad about facing Anaheim? Go ahead and check out how well their pitchers have been throwing the ball since the ASB, they're not too stellar.
Most Ray fans don't realize that the Red Sox were missing two key players in Bay and Drew. Yes, we thought our AAAA team could handle you for the series.
Sad, we underestimated the silly Tampa Bay Rays that are funded by our revenue sharing.

I'm from New England. Now that I live here I go to the Trop and watch the Rays (I'm a season ticket holder). It's great what the Rays have done. I wish them well. But I'll always be a Sox fan; it's just not something you can change your mind about after 40 years. So when the Sox are in town I root for them -- politely.
Good luck, Rays, you deserve all the credit you're getting. It's going to be a fun postseason.

I know these type of "fans" are new to most Ray fans, but they're a common nuisance around most ballparks.
It's baseball and it happens. The only solution would be to ban drinking at the ballpark, but they'd never do that.

WHO IS THE TAMPA BAY HECKLER AND WHERE IS HE?
That has to be my favorite Rays fan. I've never seen someone so devoted and put so much time and effort into doing a great job at "playing" with the other team.

You guys didn't FOLLOW baseball in 1999.

This was a typical drunk person, not a fan. First let me say, at that moment, security and the Police did a great job. As for my next comment, they did a horrible job, He was removed by a St Pete PD officer earlier in the game, then was able to come back to his seat. Why? I was 2 sections from the "person", he was up all game, be a stupid drunk a#*hole. Why was he let back in? I saw numerous fights, one in right field, one on the third base side, one corners in right field. Every fight I saw was a Drunk Boston "fan".
These are not fans, the a drunk'n idots. I am a true Rays fan, season ticket holder for 6 years. I jar with the Sox Fans, Yankee Fans, or whoever roots the oposite team, but its in all fun...we never fight, we shake hands after a loss or Win.
Thats my peace...I am out!
