Rookie Wade Davis battles through several early jams to pitch seven effective innings, Ben Zobrist drives in his 85th run and Carl Crawford steals his 60th base of the season as Tampa Bay clinches the second .500 record in franchise history. The Rays score two in the first on Zobrist's double and a single by Willy Aybar, who has three hits, and add insurance in the seventh on B.J. Upton's sacrifice fly following Reid Brignac's one-out triple.

Rays 7, Orioles 6

Tampa Bay rallies for the second straight game, hitting four home runs and overcoming a 6-3 deficit to beat Baltimore. Willy Aybar hits a tying three-run homer in the seventh inning, then Burrell drives in the eventual winner with a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Jose Lopez hits a tiebreaking homer off Dan Wheeler in the eighth inning as Seattle ends Tampa Bay's four-game winning streak and officially eliminates the Rays from postseason contention. Rookie of the year candidate Jeff Niemann, bidding for his 13th win for the fifth time, pitches effectively into the seventh inning but gets a no-decision. It is Niemann's fourth quality start (six or more innings, three or fewer runs) in that span.

Tampa Bay wastes a tremendous major-league debut by Wade Davis as Brandon Inge hits a ninth-inning grand slam off Russ Springer following walks issued by struggling Grant Balfour and J.P. Howell, giving Detroit a three-game sweep. Davis allowed only three hits in seven innings and struck out nine, a Rays record for a big-league debut, to outpitch former Ray Edwin Jackson. Lance Cormier threw only 17 pitches in getting four outs but was pulled with one out in the ninth as Balfour, Howell and Springer failed to record an out among them.

James Shields and the bullpen give away a 6-3 lead late, sending fading Tampa Bay to its third loss in a row and fourth in five games. Carlos Pena drives in his 100th run of the season for the Rays, and Evan Longoria matches his rookie total with his 27th home run.

The Tampa Bay Rays scored two in the ninth but came up short against the Detroit Tigers, losing 4-3 on Friday night at Tropicana Field. The Tigers scored three runs in their half of the ninth then held off the Rays' rally.

Rays fall to Red Sox 6-3

ST. PETERSBURG — Clay Buchholz pitched six effective innings, Jason Bay drove in two runs and the Boston Red Sox hurt Tampa Bay's playoff hopes with a 6-3 win over the Rays on Thursday night. The Red Sox took two of three from the Rays — Boston's first series win at Tropicana Field since Sept. 21-23, 2007 — to extend their AL wild-card advantage over Tampa Bay to six games. Texas trails Boston by three games.
