Fearing foreclosure? There's help

If you’re having trouble hanging onto your home, there’s help. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services on Wednesday encouraged homeowners who are at risk of foreclosure to get free legal assistance.

Florida Legal Services and the Florida Bar Association have partnered in establishing a toll-free hotline that will help consumers find a free attorney. Florida is second in the nation next to California for homes in foreclosure, with 77,000 state homeowners in foreclosure, according to Florida Legal Services.

“Home ownership remains a foundation of our society, leading to stability of families and contributing significantly to our local, state and national economy, and any effort that helps families keep their homes in this uncertain economy is beneficial,” said department Commissioner Charles Bronson. To reach the hotline, call 866-607-2187.

(Un)Real Estate offers a peek at the housing market usually reserved for insiders. While it focuses on the Tampa Bay area, it won't neglect dipping into the rest of Florida and beyond. Its goal? Simple: To help you keep a roof over your head without losing your shirt.

Times business reporter James Thorner has covered the Tampa Bay area housing market since 1999 and writes a weekly column on the topic in the St. Petersburg Times. Having recently bought and sold a house here, Thorner has shown his insights are more than theory. He's got the burn marks to prove it.
