Blue suede grooves - It's Tuesday!
We punched today's date into the handy-dandy events database at entertainment.tampabay.com and this is the best of the best today:
Bruce Nye the Elvis Guy: If Elvis were alive today, chances are he’d be chillin’ at Gators with a margarita in his hand. That could be a problem, since Bruce Nye puts on such a convincing performance as the Sultan of Sideburns that Priscilla herself could get confused. Nye does private events as well, so if you’ve got a hunka’ hunka’ burning birthday coming up, look him up. 6:30-8:30 p.m. Main Bar at Gators Cafe and Saloon, 12754 Kingfish Drive, Treasure Island. (727) 367-8951.
Jonathan Richman: You may not recognize Richman’s name, but you should have heard of his former group, The Modern Lovers, the proto-punk garage rock pioneers of the mid '70s. Still doesn’t ring a bell? He was one of the sappy Greek singers who crooned along with the plot of There’s Something About Mary. Now you got it. 8 p.m. Skipper’s Smokehouse, 910 Skipper Road, Tampa. $12 advance, $15 at the door. (813) 977-6474.
USF Wind Ensemble: If the stress of the economy and the election has got you down, relax with the music of some of the top graduate and undergraduate brass, woodwind and percussion performers in the School of Music. 8-10 p.m. Theatre 2 at University of South Florida, 4202 E Fowler Ave., Tampa. $12, $6 Student/Seniors. (813) 974-2323. arts.usf.edu.
Coming up on Wednesday
- You can only imagine what kind of stuff goes on at something called Rich Guzzi’s XXX Hypnosis at the Improv.
- One of Tampa Bay’s hottest young musicians, Matt Hires performs as Skipper’s to celebrate the release of his new live EP and major-label debut.

Leigh Armstrong is a connoisseur of anything new, cool or strange. After a stint in Korea drinking soju and eating live octopi, Leigh is back in Tampa Bay and ready to experience everything from ultra-hip to the uber-weird.
