Get your geek, art and fashion on!
With the Rays playing the Red Sox at this weekend, you can expect the crowds at the Trop to be absolutely insane. If you'd rather not spend your kid's college fund on tickets, there's still enough craziness going around the bay to satisfy your need for a little weekend insanity.
Sure to scare the blue-hairs
When I hear Necronomicon, I immediately think of a man with a shotgun and a chainsaw hand fighting hordes of the undead. If you got that reference, then this event is for you. The Necronomicon convention is Friday through Sunday in St. Petersburg and will feature lots of sci-fi, horror and a whole assortment of geekiness. You can read up on some of the events (like the Necronomi-Prom on Saturday night!) in Jay Cridlin's exceedingly nerdy article and decide if you want to pack up your d20 and check it out.
Good times, bad art
If the thought of seeing anyone dressed as extras from the Matrix makes you cringe, check out Art Gone Bad at 688 Skate Park on Saturday (10/11). The show features lots of low-brow art and a do-it-yourself multimedia art extravaganza. There's also a Texas Deathmatch skateboard contest. I'm not sure how it's going to work exactly but it definitely has me intrigued.
Shouldn't models already be sexy?
If you want to keep it classy this weekend, Fonzworth Bentley is on his way to the bay to help you do just that with the Pursuit of Sexyness fashion show at Studio Inc. this Friday (10/10). Expect a bright and flashy show that shows off some of the most chic of Tampa fashion. Remember the dress code: sleek and sexy.
One of everyone's all-time favorite movies, The Goonies, is showing for free at River Tower Park on Saturday (10/11). This is one of those timeless films that is watchable over and over. The slick-shoes never cease to be hilarious. Seriously, does anyone NOT like this movie? Make it a free-movie weekend with Young Frankenstein playing at the Riverwalk area of the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center on Friday (10/10).
Don't worry. Be happy.
If you want to do something a little more Florida-style, make sure to check out the Flip-Flop Fling at the Sirata this Friday (10/10). Expect a lot of margaritas, Jimmy Buffet and a beautiful sunset on the beach as well. It's the perfect way to unwind and relax on Friday after a stressful week of news.
