    Legacy of Jeb Bush
Was Jeb Bush a positive force for Florida education?
Yes, he created a reform model for the nation to follow.
No, he destroyed the public school system.
Wait a second. Charlie Crist is governor now, right?

Today's news

Bsecti_school_2574191 Bsecti_school_2573201 CAN'T THEY JUST GET ALONG? Pinellas superintendent Clayton Wilcox (left) and School Board lawyer Jim Robinson (right) are battling over just about everything behind the scenes, with Wilcox questioning Robinson's competence in a recent e-mail. Board members say the men either need to grow up or someone needs to move on. "This is not the first chapter in this saga, but I think it might be in the school district's best interests to have this be the last chapter," chairwoman Nancy Bostock said.

MORE THAN EVOLUTION: The State Board of Education actually approved many more science standards than the one dealing with evolution. Now, school districts will begin preparing teachers to deal with the changes. See sidebar here.

SCHOOL OFFICER CLEARED: State and local officials have determined that Gulf Middle SRO John Nohejl did nothing wrong after looking into how a friend with links to porn appeared on his MySpace page that was directed at students.

EDUCATING CHILDREN WITH AUTISM: Parents torn between sending their autistic children to a public school or personally tending to their needs decide to open a school of their own in southeast Hillsborough.

TOP OF THE CLASS HILLSBOROUGH: School, library seek walkway (B.T. Washington Elementary); Business students take home big win (Wharton High); Fifth-graders aid preserve (Robinson Elementary)

DEALING WITH IT: Palm Beach schools stand to lose $15.5-million in state funding before the end of the fiscal year, the Sun-Sentinel reports. "We are not treating it as though the sky is falling," superintendent Art Johnson says.

NOT SO BAD: University system chancellor Mark Rosenberg says budget cuts won't be as deep as first expected, the Tallahassee Democrat reports.

SOLACE AT EDISON: Joseph Wise, Duval's fired superintendent, lands at job at the nation's biggest school management firm, the Florida Times-Union reports.

WANNA GRADE THE FCAT? A state subcontractor is advertising for test graders on Craigslist, saying a background in education isn't necessary, WFTV-9 in Orlando reports.

WILL THE SMALL SURVIVE? Feeling the budget crunch, school districts across Florida are considering whether they can afford the expense of running smaller, often rural, schools, the Orlando Sentinel reports.

THEY'LL DO IT THEMSELVES: The Palm Beach school district adopts a locally-funded teacher performance pay plan after rejecting state funding for a similar program, the Palm Beach Post reports.

ONE-YEAR REPRIEVE: The Collier School Board relents on imposing a new high school schedule for next year after students protest, but won't say what it will do after that, the Naples Daily News reports.

Comments

Why not open up comments just for Wilcox's lastest bully fest? When are the editors at the Times going to admit they made a mistake by befriending such a low life?
