The Pinellas County School Board generated headlines this week with a proposal to provide affordable housing for some of its teachers. And Pinellas is hardly alone.
A bevy of other Florida districts have floated similar plans in the past year, including Pasco, Broward and Orange. New York City's program targets harder-to-find teachers (math, science, special ed) in high-needs schools.
Is that the way to go?

Let's park FEMA trailers outside all our schools. Teachers could live there and not even have to commute to work. The formaldehyde fumes wouldn't bother us, we're used to working in buildings with lousy air quality already. You could even take the trailer rent out of our paychecks.

You load sixteen tons, and what do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt.
Saint Peter, don't you call me, 'cause I can't go;
I owe my soul to the company store...

Hahaha on the Learning Communities comment. You do have a point. What other group of college educated professionals, many with advanced degrees, require this public assistance? So shameful, Florida!

Imagine the list of do's and don'ts that will accompany the deed.

What other college educated professionals require public "affordable housing"? This is an embarrassment. Pay teachers enough to take care of themselves already. Besides, what makes you think they want to live with other teachers? Or is this just another way to get them to work together in so-called "Professional Learning Communities"?
