Tebow spotted at Bucs game

Tebow_talk420

Kristi Cheatham shares a picture she had taken with Tim Tebow the Sunday after his Heisman trophy win.

She describes the scene: "I grabbed him at the Bucs game prior to the halftime announcement that he was there. He was 'low profile' and I was quite surprised that no one around me noticed who he was. Nice gentleman. Great to meet him."

Crazy for tiki bars?

Tikibar
Labor Day is almost here. That means we have one last long summer weekend to enjoy the best of the Florida lifestyle. And by that, we mean partying at our favorite tiki bars!

The younger crowd goes for the party atmosphere of Shephard's on Clearwater Beach or the South Beach Sunday after over at Crabby Bill's in Tampa. Others prefer the laid-back, family-friendlier action at The Hut in Madeira Beach.

But what we want to know is this: What's your favorite bay area tiki bar? Drop us a comment and then don't be surprised if you see the tampabay.com krewe sitting beside you next time. (We'll be the ones swilling down those frosty mai tais.)

Rays fans vs. the umps

Still steaming over the ump's call in Sunday's Rays game at Chicago? Short of stranding that misguided official on the roof of Tropicana Field during a hot August night, there's probably no appropriate justice coming for bay area baseball fanatics.

"As much as the Rays might feel obstructed by the controversial call involving A.J. Pierzynski in Sunday's loss to Chicago, there isn't much they can do about it," writes Rays beat writer Marc Topkin.

But tampabay.com readers suggest otherwise:

Mike
says: "Kinda makes you want to take raw eggs to the next home game for the umps."

We can't condone throwing objects at the umps -- that's a sure way to find yourself booted from Trop -- but here are some other ways fans can send a message.

PROMOTIONAL GIVEAWAYS: Glasses for the umps (maybe some of those leftover Joe Maddon ones from last year?), coupons for eye exams at the neighborhood optometrist, jars of baby food with Pierzynski's mugshot on the label.

PRE-GAME MUSIC: Three Blind Mice, Collide, Walk Away, Nobody Loves the Ump (remember that classic I Love Lucy episode where they sing this with Bob Hope?)

FAN SIGNS:

An eye chart that spells out Pierzynski (Big P, smaller IER, even smaller ZYNSKI)
Free Willy from Surreal World!
Where's the Geico Lizard? We need collision insurance!

Kids on a plane? The horrors

Airline travelers have lots to say about today's column on flying with a baby.

Bridget Hall Grumet  discovers her baby no longer earns her pre-boarding perks. No mention of tantrums or diaper-changing on the plane. "We need a little extra time to get settled," Grumet wrote. But tampabay.com readers took the opportunity to criticize the whole notion of traveling with a baby.

Chuck asks parents of infants to stay home: "I fly every week for work. Nothing is more irritating than the mom with the 3 month old on her lap next to you. New parents, consider staying home the first year and off planes, restaurants, and movies as a courtesy to others."

Ashley says: " Parents have to realize that your children screaming for two hours on a flight will irritate everybody. If someone makes a rude comment, deal with it. But your child is obviously uncomfortable, sad you don't care enough to think of their happiness."

"My parents were SMART enough to keep me off planes until I was past the age of 10," BK wrote. "If you have kids, DRIVE, or make gramma and grampa come to YOU. Your newborn won't remember the trip, anyway.

Then others jumped in to defend the harried parents.

ML wrote: " I'd rather sit next to a kid than have most of you overweight people taking over my seat. How about that!

Another reader wrote: "Did it ever occur to you that sometimes parents HAVE to take their little one with them, (funeral, wedding). And some of those times are scheduled for when the baby is supposed to sleep, but then the plane is not on time? Suck it up, buy earplugs!"

Lockup: Here is another in the continuing series by Times photographer Chris Zuppa about life in the Hillsborough County jails. This report is Video court: On one screen, they see Judge Walter Heinrich working from his bench in downtown Tampa. Two video cameras transmit the inmatesÍ image back. They're present for various reasons. Some are suspected fugitives, murders, thieves, prostitutes and sexual predators.

Pythons in the Everglades: With no natural enemies except gators, pythons in the Everglades are reproducing like bunnies. Scientists think that tens of thousands of them are now slithering about, devouring native critters and anything else that breathes. It's impossible to kill them; most of them are inaccessible. So scientists are reduced to trying to study and track them. It gets worse, too. At least one study suggests that pythons would be right at home in a wide swath of the country from southern California to Delaware. Watch an audio slide show.

Paycheck to Paycheck: Facing foreclosure on her home, Maria Juhasz, 46, has learned that a recent appraisal says her home is worth $40,000 less than she paid for it three years ago. She is selling parts of her garden, piece by piece, to reclaim some of the money she put into it that she'd never get back when the house is seized. Video

Friend --

I have some important news that I want to make official.

I've chosen Joe Biden to be my running mate.

Joe and I will appear for the first time as running mates this afternoon in Springfield, Illinois -- the same place this campaign began more than 19 months ago.

I'm excited about hitting the campaign trail with Joe, but the two of us can't do this alone. We need your help to keep building this movement for change.

Please let Joe know that you're glad he's part of our team.  Share your personal welcome note and we'll make sure he gets it:

The fickle finger of Fay

Tropical Storm Fay will remain just that: a tropical storm. All hurricane warnings in the bay area have been canceled and local agencies have lifted orders.

Of course, school districts can't rescind their cancellations.

Are you annoyed that kids are home for what likely will be a really rainy, windy day? The Hard Rock Cafe was about the only business that vowed to stay open. Several local counties recommended or ordered evacuations yesterday with news that Fay was heading our way.

Now what when the next warning comes? Will residents heed the same advice?

August 18, 2008

Ready for Fay?

Tropical Storm Fay is continuing on its path toward the Keys and is expected to become a hurricane that hits southwest Florida tomorrow. Locally, the Tampa Bay area could see strong winds and rain Tuesday.

Numerous agencies have canceled meetings and area school districts (Pinellas, Hillsborough and Hernando) announced they won't be open tomorrow.

Our reporters are in Naples, Sarasota and Punta Gorda and are publishing the latest storm news in our Storm Watch blog.

Reader: 'Crist throws McCabe under the bus'

Gov. Charlie Crist has ordered a review of a state prosecutor's investigation clearing a police officer in the shooting death of  Gibbs High student Javon Dawson

Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney Bernie McCabe on Wednesday defended the thoroughness of his investigation and questioned the governor's decision. And readers are challenging Crist's move as well:

RH says Crist caved on this one. "Where is the support for his State Attorney? Oh no, his support goes to the Uhuru Movement and their demands. ENOUGH!"

Shanequa says she's glad to see that the state is flush with cash to redo this investigation. "If no one at the sceen is talking, why will the outcome be any different? Crist is a Politician and a worthless one at that."

John says: "Unbelievable.  You pay a guy to do a job and for some PC reason the Gov. gets involved."

"Just when you think this nonsense is finally settled, Crist throws McCabe under the bus," Piobair says. "I guess that he'll pander to just about anybody."

Readers keep it cool Longoria

Long John Romano writes about the 'frightening' news that Evan Longoria has a fractured wrist and will join Carl Crawford on the sidelines as the Rays injuries pile up. "Seriously, this is about as bad as it can get for Tampa Bay," the Times columnist writes.

But tampabay.com readers are staying cool, staying away from the panic button.

Tim in Seattle says the Rays still have a solid team. "Keep it real, Rays fans. Playoffs this season is a possible goal, even with Longo and Crawford out. Bringing up the D word is just bad kharma!"

Mike reminds Romano there are other players on the team: "Isn't there a whole bunch of other players on this team? As good as Longo is, he is not the only reason the Rays are in 1st. Stop with the worry wart mentality. If this team is going to win it all, it will take the whole team! Time to step it up!"

Has airport safety gone too far?

Scanner Columnist Sue Carlton writes about the new full body scanners coming to Tampa International Airport and says she feels like we're giving up too much in the name of security. "Safety" starts to feel like we are surely being punked," she writes.

Tampabay.com readers aren't looking forward to this new screening either.

Ann says this all sounds like a egregious invasion of privacy. "We are becoming a "Big Brother" country. I wonder when they are going to ban books."

Mark sees some benefits in the scans. "There are possible benefits:' It's twins.' 'You have a kidney stone.'  'Better get that gallstone checked when you get to Chicago.'"

Eric says "Let's be clear. This does NOTHING to enhance your security- only the illusion of security. Traveling by air has never been safer because airline passengers no longer sit quietly like they did before 9/11. No matter. The terrorists really have won."

How about you: Will you feel a bit safer or a lot more naked?

On July 20, Times Senior Correspondent Lucy Morgan reported on the mysterious activities in North Carolina of Miamian Domenic Rabuffo, who is shepherding a real estate development on a remote mountain that is completely out of character for the area. He is building huge luxury homes sandwiched on 1-acre tracts, in a gated community he values at more than $200-million.

Rabuffo has been buying land, often paying dramatically more than it's worth, and selling it to people who pay even more. The buyers, some having never laid eyes on the property, all obtain big mortgages.

Now, reports Morgan, SunTrust Mortgage officials accused 14 of those property owners of falsifying their income with they obtained mortgages totaling more than $20-million.

All abuzz over Scientologists in Clearwater

Today's story about the Church of Scientology buying a prime parcel in downtown Clearwater has tampabay.com readers talking.

One reader wants to know: "With maybe 50,000 members worldwide, where are they getting this kind of money in cash?"

If the five acres become a church facility, it will mean another valuable piece of waterfront land comes off the property tax rolls. And that didn't sit well with some readers.

"Why are these properties coming off the tax rolls, especially in times as they are now? This is NOT a CHURCH or a religion," Casey says.

"Is this really the smartest move? " Suzy asks. "There are better ways to develop the beautiful city of Clearwater!"

And Shelly is wondering about Scientology's most famous member: "They haven't even finished their so-called Super Powers building.  Say, has anyone seen Tom Cruise flying yet?"

To Favre or not to Favre

The Brett Favre saga has landed in Tampa Bay. The Packers quarterback spoke with Bucs coach Jon Gruden Tuesday night about a possible trade to Tampa Bay, and now Bucs fans are talking.

Jerry has been replaying videos in his head: "I recall a video clip of Jon Gruden berating Chris Simms for his inability to grasp the terminology of a play he had called in practice. He followed up with the comment that Brett Favre never had that problem. Now he has the chance to prove it."

Too much indecision for Jay: "Favre is making a fool of himself. he had a great career and could have gone out with style. Instead he has made himself the fool."

Wayne of Port Richey has faith in Favre, for a couple years: " Yeah! With Favre we can win the Super Bowl! He has about 2 years left, and by that time Vick will be out and we can get him and dominate!"

Sharon says it all comes down to one thing: " It doesn't matter which quarterback I'd choose.  All that matters is who will make the most money for the Glazers."

It's all about Favre for Dennis: " Love Brett, if he can't play with the Viking or the Bears, then God bless him with Tampa."

Favre, Garcia? Too many QuarterBucs?

Shoppers unite

Tough times call for tough words about grocery stores. Tampabay.com readers showed their loyalties in response to today's story about grocery chains fighting to keep their shoppers.

"Publix better lower their prices before buying up and building all these new stores. I was Publix shopper for over 30 years and with their recent "rip off" attitude I've moved on. A few cents is nothing, 2 or 3 dollars is substantial," Lori says.

Sharon shows her loyalty to Publix: "Publix is clean and friendly, and when I take advantage of their sales, I always come up with the best pricing there overall. Go Publix!"

Mac is already predicting the end for Publix: "It's lights out for Publix too when Wal-Mart parks one of its Neighborhood Market groceries across the street from each Publix store."

How about you? Publix, Wal-Mart or are you ready to start growing your own food?

Rays thank devoted fan

Tb_celeste

Celeste Spoon of Brooksville wrote last month about falling in love with the Rays. She got hooked while she was home-bound recovering from surgery.

She wrote last week to say that the sent her a Rays shirt with her name on the back and promised to send her game tickets as soon as she's well enough to make it to the Trop.

She ended her note to me with this humorous line: "I tell my friends that I don't smoke, I don't dip (whatever that is), I don't chew, I don't drink, and I don't swear. BUT I do lock the doors, turn off the phone pull the blinds, and get comfy when the Rays are on T.V."

Enjoy the game, Celeste.
