Links for Nov. 1 Times: Right by Miles

In a previous St. Petersburg Times story, Right by Miles, we told readers about the accident involving a Polk County sheriff's deputy in which the Polk Sheriff's Office concluded that the deputy played no role.

The story suggested he might well have actually caused the accident. At the time, we knew about photos of the accident that supposedly showed it was hit and knocked off the road.  We obtained those photos, showed them to indepedent forensic accident investigators, who tell us that the pictures are a slam dunk: the car was hit. It did not run off the road by itself, as the Polk Sheriff's Office has always maintained, rather, it's deputy hit it.

An ad for Barack Obama is saturating Hispanic TV stations in key battleground states, such as Florida, Colorado and Nevada. What is most striking about the ad is that Obama speaks Spanish almost flawlessly. Republicans are crying foul, noting that Obama is pretending to know Spanish when he really doesn't. Rays' dream season ends

Mall developers ask: Downturn? What downturn?

At 10 a.m. today the $156-million Shops at Wiregrass opens at the epicenter of the local homebuilding collapse and the worst retailing climate in decades.

"Economies go up and down all the time, so we build for the long term," said Jim Richardson, East Coast retail development boss for Forest City Enterprises Corp., which built Wiregrass in a joint venture with Goodman Co. of West Palm Beach. "But if we tap into the pent up demand we saw here last weekend, this project will turn out wonderfully." Read story

Tampabay.com readers have been drawn to the tale of Summer Moll, the 4-year-old girl who survived a crash that killed her mother. As she recovers from the accident, a custody battle is brewing between her grandparents and her father (who had been absent from Summer's life for three years).

Several readers have asked how they can help with Summer's medical expenses, which have already hit $500,000.
