How to pick the perfect fall six-pack of beer

With each fall comes another opportunity to assemble the perfect seasonal six-pack. Of course, this is often a six-pack in name only, as many of the latest seasonal brews come in large- format bottles (with a price tag to match). That just means that you’ll need to assemble some friends and family to share with, and who can argue with that? Here are six picks to get started. — Justin Grante_SFrBAbita Pecan Harvest Ale

As the name suggests, this toasty amber ale is brewed with roasted Louisiana pecans. The base beer is fairly neutral, allowing the sweet and nutty pecan character to stand front and center. It drinks not unlike a liquid pecan pie — though it’s a bit less sweet, thankfully.e_SFrBAvery Rumpkin

Despite its diminutive size, this brew is intensely bold and decadent, clocking in at an extra hefty 17.5 percent alcohol by volume. Spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and, of course, pumpkin, Rumpkin is aged in rum barrels for a rich and sweet fruitcake finish. Treat this one like an after-dinner cordial: served in a snifter and shared with good company.e_SFrBBreckenridge Pumpkin Spice Latte

Unlike the coffee shop craze, this beer is actually light and dry, poured from a nitrogen-charged can, a la Irish stouts like Guinness, Murphy’s and Beamish. It’s smooth and creamy, with a seasonal kick from additions of coffee, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove. It gets better as it warms, and it’s great straight out of the can.e_SFrBNorth Coast Cranberry-Quince Berliner Weisse

The third entry in North Coast’s new seasonal series of spontaneously soured Berliners, this one features fresh cranberry and quince, a pearlike fruit popular in parts of northern Africa, the Middle East and Europe. It’s packaged in a clear bottle, showcasing a beautiful, vivid rose hue. This Berliner weisse is tart but not sour, with a festive fruit flavor that adds a balancing sweetness.e_SFrBHarpoon Flannel Friday

Named after the annual wardrobe change that occurs at Harpoon’s New England breweries at the start of fall each year, Flannel Friday is a hoppy and robust amber ale that finishes with an unexpected but refreshing splash of citrus.e_SFrBUinta Oak Jacked Imperial Pumpkin Ale

At 11 percent alcohol by volume and aged in oak for more than six months, this is definitely a bottle to share. It’s part of Uinta’s Crooked Line series, heady, barrel-aged brews released in cellarable, 750ml corked-and-caged bottles. It’s rich and spice-forward, with loads of vanilla and caramel flavors.
