Letter: Disrespectful reverse flag?

I have noticed, and I am sure I am not the only one but the right side rear (passenger’s side) of a lot of Saint Petersburg Police cars has a small  American flag sticker backwards. The left side is correct but who’s brilliant idea was this? I am very upset to see that we would let our city officials or city employee’s allow this to be put on the vehicle and be ok with this. I would like to see them removed completely or new flags ordered on the right side the correct way. Where is Mr. Rick when you need him to resolve such issues. What do you think? -- David K., St. Petersburg (Proud to be born and raised here but now starting to wonder.)

Petraeus_2Howard here. I think you protest too much. Display of the flag with the stars to the right is not unheard of. In military uniforms with a flag patch on the arm, the stars are worn "closest to the heart," that is, on the right side of the flag on the right arm. Here's a photo of Gen. Petraeus with exactly such a patch. According to the web site www.ushistory.org, there are some people who would like to change the regulations and have the stars always on the left. It's so interesting that we get our dander up over a piece of cloth. Why? So we can blindly "support our troops" and tear up over our wonderful country and be led around like sheep by our politicians who we allow to do some terrible things around the world but, by golly, we put our hands over our hearts when that flag shows up, and those colors don't run.

Someone should tell Bush "it's about YOU keeping your hands off our freedoms, stupid."

If you don't respect the bill of rights, what does that flag stand for?

PIN ON PATRIOTS are disrespecting it by wearing flag as clothing.

A made in China with lead paint flag --- what is that a symbol of?

ANNOUNCEMENT: WEEKLY LIVE CHAT: Join Howard from noon to 1 p.m. each Tuesday here on TroxBlog for a live online chat about current events in Florida and the Tampa Bay area.

TroxBlog is the blog-home of Howard Troxler, a St. Petersburg Times metro columnist since 1991. His print column normally appears Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays on page 1B.

Born March 19, 1959, in Burlington, N.C., Troxler writes a mix of reporting, analysis, satire and commentary on state and local matters. He considers himself politically unpredictable with libertarian leanings ("I'm for gay marriage WITH gun ownership") but readers routinely conclude he is hopelessly biased against whatever it is they happen to be for. He is married to a woman who has more sense than he does and lives in St. Petersburg.
