Australian pine wars II

Australian Pines (Casuarina trees) are not indigineous to this area and are probably the dirtiest tree one can imagine.  They rob indigineous flora of nutrients and continually drop their needles, creating a continual mess. In this area they are nothing more than a weed.  There is no salutary reason for having them in public parks. The sooner they are all eradicated the better. Good for whomever is responsible for this program. -- Anthony Camisso, Tierra Verde

Comments

Sea oats and Australian Pines are two of the most salt tolerant plants.

Crackers, planted the pine trees to provide shade in salty sand regions because they were the only thing that would grow and provide shade. They can be found throughout the Caribbean as well as the South Pacific.

I love to hear the wind blow in these giants when a storm or cold front is moving.

I disagree with the state and county on the eradication.

If the truth be told… “WE” are not indigenous to this area either.

About This Blog

ANNOUNCEMENT: WEEKLY LIVE CHAT: Join Howard from noon to 1 p.m. each Tuesday here on TroxBlog for a live online chat about current events in Florida and the Tampa Bay area.

TroxBlog is the blog-home of Howard Troxler, a St. Petersburg Times metro columnist since 1991. His print column normally appears Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays on page 1B.

Born March 19, 1959, in Burlington, N.C., Troxler writes a mix of reporting, analysis, satire and commentary on state and local matters. He considers himself politically unpredictable with libertarian leanings ("I'm for gay marriage WITH gun ownership") but readers routinely conclude he is hopelessly biased against whatever it is they happen to be for. He is married to a woman who has more sense than he does and lives in St. Petersburg.
