Column: Buying our favor with our own debt

CardsCongratulations! You and I have just taken part in setting a record.

For the five months that ended Feb. 29, the U.S. government set a record for spending more money than it took in.

If you are keeping track, we spent more than we took in by $263-billion. The way things are going, our total deficit for this year will be something like $410-billion.

Way to go, USA!

Now, whose fault is this?

It's the president's fault, for starters. Like many modern Republicans, he thinks it is "conservative" to keep borrowing money, instead of spending less or raising taxes.

It's Congress' fault, too. Congress is run these days by Democrats. They like spending money, especially if the Republicans are doing it, too.

And, of course, mostly it's your fault and my fault.... [Link to entire column]

“More likely, though, it will be a different household plumbing fixture that reminds them of what we did with their money.”

Absolutely brilliant… and absolutely true!

Spend a little, skimp a little. This is not the first time the country has had to overcome an enormous deficit. And this is certainly not the first time we have been through recession. Its not the most we have ever paid for gasoline, or the most we’ve spent on a war. And its not the most copper, silver, or gold have ever been worth. What it is, is a bad administration who was leading us down a dead end road got reelected. As if the ride wasn’t bumpy enough the first time around. Nope, America wanted an encore. Well can’t really blame the voters. After all the election was a toss up between two idiots in the first place, so we had to bite the bullet and flip a coin. We got who was available period. As far as the economy, yeah its bad now but the days of removing our money from the banks and burying it in the backyard are in the past. Rather than pull your hair out, pull your stocks. At least save enough for a pack of cigarettes and a beer while your filing those bankruptcy papers. Or, just stop spending so much. If you forget something at the grocery store, or they overcharged you a dollar for something don’t worry. Lay your obsessive compulsive ego aside and realize its not worth the three dollars in gas it will cost you to run back. Besides your receipt will still be good the next time around. If your dining out, please don’t think that by tipping 10% as opposed to the usual 15 or 20% your helping the economy. What your doing is making someone working to pay for college go without the gas money they need to get to work tomorrow. If you want to help try finishing your glass of wine rather than buying everyone else a round. I could go on and on but I think my fellow 8th grade graduates get my gist.
Sincerely, A concerned Floridain.

ANNOUNCEMENT: WEEKLY LIVE CHAT: Join Howard from noon to 1 p.m. each Tuesday here on TroxBlog for a live online chat about current events in Florida and the Tampa Bay area.

TroxBlog is the blog-home of Howard Troxler, a St. Petersburg Times metro columnist since 1991. His print column normally appears Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays on page 1B.

Born March 19, 1959, in Burlington, N.C., Troxler writes a mix of reporting, analysis, satire and commentary on state and local matters. He considers himself politically unpredictable with libertarian leanings ("I'm for gay marriage WITH gun ownership") but readers routinely conclude he is hopelessly biased against whatever it is they happen to be for. He is married to a woman who has more sense than he does and lives in St. Petersburg.
