Thanks for reminding us what this day REALLY means, Howard. We contantly need to be refreshed on the institutional knowledge at hand when we so often marginalize a national holiday as framed by the gawdy and particular trimmings.

Independence Day it is, and thanks for including the roll call of honor.

Happy 4th to you and yours!! I'll be staying home comforting my three dogs .....the neighborhood ballistics usually start at three and go on all night long......

Lorraine

Amen

"But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security."

I fear we are reaching this point, but Americans...

"are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed"

...hence the continual re-election of incumbents.

RE Guy,HOW COME YOUR EXCLUDING FLAME-THROWERS?

Please people! The Declaration of Independence is the American equivalent of Lenin; it's been dead forever and preserved in a glass case for the peasants to gawk at occasionally.

I mean, be honest; wouldnt you really rather be kicking the RAYS can around?

sure don't take much to stir up the fascist element.

About This Blog

Welcome to TroxBlog, the web-home of columnist Howard Troxler, where he and readers discuss his column topics and current events. The goal here is to focus on the merits of issues, instead of personal attacks or knee-jerk partisanship.

Howard Troxler has been a St. Petersburg Times metro columnist since 1991. His print column normally appears Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays on page 1B.

Born March 19, 1959, in Burlington, N.C., Troxler writes a mix of reporting, analysis, satire and commentary on state and local matters. He considers himself politically unpredictable with libertarian leanings ("I'm for gay marriage WITH gun ownership") but readers routinely conclude he is hopelessly biased against whatever it is they happen to be for. He is married with no children and lives in St. Petersburg.
