At a time when newspapers across the country are in dire financial straits, the St. Petersburg Times should strive all the more to make certain the product it produces lives up to the self-hype of how great the newspaper is. Nevertheless, the Times is in need of new writers and editors. For example, in "Shooting from the lip (by Tom Jones)" Jones writes of Bobby Knight, "As Sports Illustrated's Richard Deitsch pointed out, Knight once called the media "one or two steps above prostitution." Jones then asks, "But now their good enough for him?" Should this not read, "But now THEY'RE good enough for him?"

This is below entry level journalism. In fact, this is grammar school English. At the risk of appearing as if I am picking nits, this is just one of a plethora of embarrassing mistakes the self-described "best newspaper" has published lately.

Please, get your act together and stop the aggrandizing. There is no reason for mistakes such as this to get past both the writer and editor. Your product is not all that and hasn't been for some time.

i took issue with the knight comment, but in a much different way.

knight made sportswriters's jobs impossible? really?

i seem to recall reading a book in college, "season on the brink," where knight -- unlike dean smith for one -- granted john feinstein unlimited access to both his personal life and his team for an entire year.

i can't count how many columns i've read about knight press conferences where knight was, in short, umpredictable.

i may be wrong but it seems knight has given sportswriters and columnists more than enough fodder over the years to write about, both good and bad.

i mean, would you really rather have some nondescript coach who was beyond vanilla who only spoke in tired, overused cliches and as a result, said nothing?

knight's like the "bad guy" in 'rasslin': you may hate him but damn, he's entertaining.

tom's weekly columns are an example of why newspapers can survive. analysis: that's the key. any fan/reader has dozens of options on where to get game results -- just minutes after the game finiish; not 1/3 of the day later.

but insightful analysis and behind-the-scenes information is what i am looking for, and what many sports fans are looking for. it's also why i go to other blogs like thebiglead.com and sportsbybrooks.com.

i may not agree with everything tom writes -- and AP Style should never, ever be confused with English grammar -- but i enjoy his columns.

please keep it up tom.

Knight is entertaining, yes.

AP Style assumes proper grammar. Tom did not.

About This Blog

Tom Jones doesn't sing "It's Not Unusual'' or shake his hips (well, unless you're willing to pay cash), but he does have plenty to say about sports. If it's funny, crazy, weird, irreverent or worth arguing, Tom has his opinions. So pull up a chair and get his two cents -- and give him your two cents, as well.
