Update: 6:10 p.m.
Steve Duemig, arrested on suspicion of DUI early Sunday morning, addressed the incident on his WDAE radio show at 3 p.m. Here is a sampling of some of his comments:
* "This is a very difficult situation and I will face it like a man.''
* "It was an unfortunate situation I was involved with on Sunday morning. ... I will face it and go from there and let the legal system take its course. ... I was literally in the driveway of my home.''
* "I apologize for putting the station on turd watch. ... It's not fun. I apologize to the station for putting us on a negative view.''
* "There are a lot of haters out there that will have a field day. That's expected. When you're the top dog, they come after you. They're going to attack. I can accept that. It's not fun going through it. This is not a prepared statement. This is from the heart.''
* "Many, many, many, many, many more make the decision to drive home than don't. And you can consider yourself very fortunate if you've never been pulled over.''
* "I apologize. I will accept the hate. I hope you don't use hypocrite (to call me.) I don't go after athletes who have been charged because it can happen to anyong.
* "I want to thank the station for supporting me. It has been very, very comforting to have some of the big, big hitters in this company saying, 'We'll get through it.' ''
WDAE-AM sports talk show host Steve Duemig was arrested early Sunday morning near the Feather Sound area in St. Petersburg on suspicion of driving under the influence. Duemig, also known as the "Big Dawg,'' hosts what is probably the most popular sports talk radio show in the Tampa Bay area.
Reached Monday afternoon, Duemig had no comment other than to say he would address the arrest on his radio show, which begins at 3 p.m.
According to the Pinellas County Sheriff's department report, Duemig was pulled over in his white Lexus at 1:39 a.m. Sunday morning. He was booked at 3:11 a.m. and released at 10:15 a.m. No other details were available.

Tom Jones doesn't sing "It's Not Unusual'' or shake his hips (well, unless you're willing to pay cash), but he does have plenty to say about sports. If it's funny, crazy, weird, irreverent or worth arguing, Tom has his opinions. So pull up a chair and get his two cents -- and give him your two cents, as well.
E-mail Tom Jones:
BWahahahaha. Couldn't have happened to a bigger A-Hole.

Lets see if he can MAN UP for once in his life

If 620 didn't fire Chris Thomas for his DUIs, they aren't going to fire Steve Duemig.
I'm a moderate fan of Duemig and was a huge fan of CT--he will likely follow Chris' lead on how to apologize and keep his job with his on-air comments.

Sounds like someone had TOO much fun at the Venue.
Posted by: John | June 16, 2008 at 02:20 PM
This is DUI #2 if I remember correctly...I'm sure it "wasn't his fault," etc. etc.

Fire him!!!! And I will listen to 620 again.

Never heard of this guy.
Posted by: Jay | June 16, 2008 at 02:26 PM
I hope he lets Jeramy Stevens come on the air for a week and scream to all of Tampa Bay that Steve Deumig is bad for the area and that we should all stop listening to 620 until he is off the air. Karma is biatch sometimes. Maybe next time he will learn to focus on what players do on the field and stay out of their personal lives. This guy has had a vendetta for Jon Gruden for 3-4 years too. Maybe Gruden could get some air time to bash him too.
Those who live in glass houses....

Couldn't have happened to a more deserving guy. You can always tell the hypocrites, they're the ones that act the most rightous and have the least tolerance. Wish I could buy the deputy a dozen donuts.
Posted by: Duane | June 16, 2008 at 02:38 PM
Wow. Yeah, he doesn't have a leg to stand on ever again about calling out everyone connected to the Bucs organization who has ever had a DUI.
Posted by: David Jenkins | June 16, 2008 at 02:38 PM
Rather than follow his lead of being dismissive and rude, I'll simply wish Mr. Duemig the best of luck in dealing with his legal troubles and, if he has a problem with drinking, I hope he seeks and finds help with that, too.
Posted by: Nathan | June 16, 2008 at 02:40 PM
Sounds like a bunch of disgruntled listeners Mr Duemig has ripped. Give it a rest. Any one of you a-holes on this blog could and should have had a DUI at some point in your ptiful lives. Where does it say what he blew folks. Remember innocence before being labled guilty....Get a life

Maybe he should take your advice
Posted by: shp | June 16, 2008 at 02:44 PM
Once is a mistake, twice is a habit. Will you continue to employ someone who puts other peoples lives in danger? I do believe in innocent until proven guilty(Duemeg does not, look at his perspective of Jerramy Stevens.) Duemeg should be suspended, with pay, until the resolution of this case. At that point, if found guilty, he should be removed from the sports animal as a representative of clear channel. Duemeg has, at many times, went off on tangets about drinking and driving and the law being too strict..............and he has not stepped up as a proper citizen who obeys the laws.

Its so wonderful how KARMA works.
Posted by: rld | June 16, 2008 at 02:47 PM
Yeah, Duemig doesn't care if someone's not actually been proven quilty of anything. It's never stopped him from assuming the worst and using it to fill his air time, so I don't he deserves the benefit of the doubt from anyone else. As you sow, so shall you reap.

Sileo may be the worst talk show host in the history of radio.
Why does he have a job?
Posted by: Andrew | June 16, 2008 at 02:49 PM
While I do like Steve's show, I don't prefer the Animal at all. Steve is caustic but Ron & Ian are as mundane as watching paint dry. Check out 1010 The Beast. As for the DUI charge, it does seem as if Uncle Karma is biting Steve in the rump.
Posted by: Rob | June 16, 2008 at 02:55 PM
Man Steve you would think these people have seen you as often as I have at Courtside. Hows that arrogance working now. Enjoy the next week/year of payback. you always where an @$$O.

I hope he gets fired and Justin Palowski can get his spot. Justin is the best sports talk host in Tampa. He is fair and does not have an agenda like this loser.
This could be the break Justin has needed. For all of the sports talk fans in this town, lets hope so.

Also first it was in his Driveway and then it was close to his driveway.. Then he uses his Heavy Hitters at Clearchannel.. There are no Heavy Hitters at Clear channel
Posted by: colt | June 16, 2008 at 03:15 PM
DUI law says if you drive anywhere in the state. You can drive on your own property and if drunk you go to jail. So if you are in the driveway......to bad
Posted by: Carl | June 16, 2008 at 03:17 PM
I like the Big Dog. I don't care about his personal life. While were on the subject of Silio... who cares if a fat "has/never been" loud mouth miami fan if he becomes a Rays fan. We don't want you!!!! Good luck Steve. You won't lose listeners......
Posted by: Todd | June 16, 2008 at 03:21 PM
You spit heads never made a mistake...yeah right. Steve does more for the community then all of you put together. He is one of the best sports talk guys anywhere. You goobers hate him because he is right most of the time and you are not able to argue with a more superior sports mind. I’ll bet most of you should have 3 DUI’s yourself but you were just lucky and never got caught. He is still the man!

Listened to his comments and they were a total cop out. No accountability. Stated people should let the criminal justice system run its course. Well fathead that works for everyone, not just for you and a DUI charge, which you infer is meaningless. Maybe Jeremy Stevens will get lucky and Duemig will have to attend a DUI class with him. If that happened, we would all know there is truly a god.
Posted by: Duane | June 16, 2008 at 03:41 PM
I haven't listened to him for 3 months now. JP has moved to the same time slot on 1010 sports. This is just another reason to turn the dial. Hypocrite!

Posted by: Houston | June 16, 2008 at 03:46 PM
To be fair, his comments on Stevens were on the other charges, not just the DUIs but the far more serious offences. Like him or not, he is right about sports most of the time. If he only went a block, he should have walked.
BTW Sileo sucks and so does 1010, every single show.

Big Dog is a LIAR about not calling out anyone on a DUI. I distinctly recall him calling out both Jon and Jay Gruden regarding their DUIs.

You never heard of JP Peterson? Have you ever watched the Bucs pregame shows, Super Bowl coverage, any local sports coverage on tv? He now has a show on 1010 from 3-6p and has good critical analysis that is fair, unlike the other guy who just rants.

BTW-michael and todd, you might think 1010 sucks, but please state facts: 1010 is local in the morning and those guys know infinite more about the local teams than that idiot Sileo. If he says, "that guy (insert Rays player here) is not bad" one more time, I might have to rip my radio right out of the car. And those guys on 1010 aren't bad and JP is really good to listen to.

I don't personally like him. His language and rudeness disturbs me. he does know sports. He also favors Tiger Woods way to much. He is very cocky also. I think since he is a role model type person, he should be taken off the air until this case is decided.
Posted by: Don | June 16, 2008 at 04:59 PM
His ratings are built on bad feeling, negativity, and hypocrisy. No wonder the backlash. Lots of listeners actually sound vindicated. That's how much people can't stand this guy.

Remember back in 2000 when that pimp of the airwaves (and sports featherweight), Ron Diaz, got arrested for DUI?
Remember the idiotic story Diaz made up about how the cop said he could go, so he went home and ate his Checkers food and drank beer. Diaz later pleaded no contest, thus confirming his status as putz.
If Duemig is falsely accused, he should fight it in court. If not, he screwed up. We all do from time to time. We're all hypocrites from time to time, too. For his sake, though, I hope Duemig follows the Chris Thomas/Nancy Alexander example rather than the Ron Diaz example.
Posted by: Dave | June 16, 2008 at 05:07 PM
Steve Deumig is the biggest joke in Tampa. How that guy has been able to be on the radio this long is beyond me. The crap that spews out of his mouth is never ending. Maybe he should spend more time drinking and less time on the radio. It would be better for everyone, especially all of the athletes in this town.
Posted by: eric | June 16, 2008 at 05:14 PM
I hope they fire Duemig and replace him with Jeremy Stevens. I bet that guy knows more about hockey than Duemig or any sport for that matter. I just love the fact that people are ripping this low life apart. They should have locked him up for a week just for fun.
Posted by: Chaz Michael Michaels | June 16, 2008 at 05:21 PM
Duemig is doing real well as a radio talk-show host. He tells the people just how its supposed to be and aggravates them as you can see with the bad responses. Having a DUI and now being a non-drinker I can say that you people better knock on wood. Especially all the Gruden A## kissers who drive home drunk from the games. Good luck to all!
Posted by: mark | June 16, 2008 at 05:27 PM
The way he talks you just KNEW he was a substance abuser. He wont lose his job to this because his bosses fell its OK to drink and drive, if they didnt he would have been fired the minute they knew about it. makes the whole station look like a pile of brown poooo.
Posted by: Rodger | June 16, 2008 at 05:54 PM
I'm sure Duemig will find away to spin this into it somehow being Gruden's fault! I think he deserves the same treatment he has called for regarding Stevens - FIRE HIM

I am a casual listener of his show and really believe people need to let up. There are two sides to every story. I have never had a DUI but I give support to him. He has been a very giving member to our community and we need to stop with the stones being thrown at him. Enough.

You people are pathetic.
"He sounds like a drunk and bets on sports."
Guess what? THAT'S COOL! That's how people have fun! Drinking and sports betting are two of the best activities I can think of.
You booze rookies are the people who get bombed twice a year and kill people on the road.

I question the decision to use this particular blog as a discussion forum for this story. I'm sure it was with great joy that the main entry was made after Tom Jones was blasted for that juvenile column on horse racing on Steve's radio show.
Seems like a catty move to me.

DYI's are a prime source of revenue and promotional opportunities for cops...Whether you have 2 or twenty they will do ya for the $$$$... Where else can they make a quick $3 or $4 K for the system!
Plus, cops are some of the biggest abusers I know! They just wont usually write-up each other...Should'nt drive drunk but, the justice system reeks of unjustice these days!

I never agreed with Big Dog on his views of Gruden. I never wish a DUI anyone. 90% of the people who posted probably drove while over a 0.08 in the last month and did not get caught. Maybe this will take him off his high horse a little though, but I wish him luck in his legal matters.

I've never gotten a DUI/DWI but I know a lot of people that have. Some were stupid drunks that couldn't control themselves. Others were responsible professionals and parents that were in complete control of themselves that were pulled over because something on their cars weren't working properly. They had a few beers at a ballgame or after-work happy hour and had the misfortune of passing a cop with a keen eye. The bottom line is it could happen to anybody that chooses to drink. All under-the-influence drivers scare me but hypocritical dumb_ _ _ es like Deumig that don't learn from their initial mistake or misfortune scare me the most. If reports that this isn't his first time are true I hope he loses his job.

Bottom line people, because of MADD, if you drink (at all), you're eligible to get a DUI. Period. Irrespective of what you think of Duemig, the DUI laws are way out of control.

I listened to his show today and he said he “never ragged on any Buc player” that got a DUI. On his web site where he talks about Jeremy Stevens in his podcast, he brings up his DUI’s a number of times. Ian Beckles this morning wanted to know how many Buc Fans bothered to show up at the Fan Fest (which was around 30,000 or so) and how many fans booed Coach Gruden (which the host said was only 2) to his surprise! This is the crap this station is all about. And the fans that call in and have valid points are wasting their time. This station has become the “National Enquire” of the airwaves and nothing else matters to them……..”Go Bucs”

All you Duemig haters, remember this. He will walk away from this charge. He will walk away screaming like a stuck lrish pig. Now you think about that when he beats the rap.
Posted by: Cheryl | June 16, 2008 at 07:51 PM
Wow, now we'll know if there's equal justice. My guess is he didn't blow, as that's what he always instructed on his show. That's a 3 month license suspension. NO driving at all. He's a visible guy. The cops will know if he's driven to the studio or the various places the show broadcasts from. I bet he'll get a high-priced attorney and will get off, but I'm really curious to see how this driving privilege plays out. For the average Joe, he can't drive at all for a year and only after 0 days to and from work (if he's been granted a hardship). Very interesting.

You people want bad radio? Listen to the bafoon that's on in the morning on 1010. He comes on around 7 or 8 in the am. To qoute from a recent framiliar movie "Dude, I literally said nothing" (40 year old virgin). I think his name is Pepper? Don't know if that's a stage name or his first name or what?
This guy never has any opinion about the local scene. You can tell he doesn't have a clue what to say or add.
That other guy T-Kraz carrys the subjects. I have to imagine that guy is pulling his hair out having to share the air waves with pepper.
I try people, I try to listen, but this pepper guy makes Sileo sound like he should be syndicated nationally. If they just let that other guy that talks with him just do the show alone, I swear it would have some purpose in this town.
Until then...620 to the end!
P.S. does 1470 still exisit?

WDAE needs to step up to the plate and fire him. It's all very simple. DUI is just one small step away from mass murder, and he should pay the price accordingly with his job and at least 2 years in the slammer.

After being away from Tampa for going on 3 years now, I realize why the Bay area is still suffering through subpar sports personalities such as "Big Dawg" and Sileo. There is a big red-neck population throughout the area which doesn't object to being talked down to and who enjoys mental midgets on the radio taking the contrarion position on every issue no matter how insane it makes them appear to the listener.
Posted by: Corey | June 16, 2008 at 09:38 PM
I have a feeling that Mr. Jerramy Stevens, who was ACCUSED, as are all men of many things, of a crime, is sitting back tonight and drinking some fine wine and smoking some very fine reeefer and basking in the glory of this jerk's demise. It will all be over for Duemig. Too many in the area hate him and this gives the brass at WDAE their out to fire his aasse. Yes Duemig, Mr. Jerramy Stevens is MORE welcome in this town than YOU. Don't let the door hit you in the aasse. You're finished. It's over.

I quit listening to the animal after CT passed away and was given XM radio. I have switched to Sirius now and will very, rarely listen to local sports radio anymore. It is all about bashing the coaches and which party I am going to or hosting. Local radio sucks, either on am or fm. Sorry, but satelite radio give better traffic info and has more channels to choose from. Its either my iPod or Sirius when I go anywhere anymore.

What is all the fuss? Everyone who drinks drinks and drives. They go hand in hand. Just some get caught and others do not. But every drinker drinks and drives at some point. Heck, who can hail a cab in this town? It takes hours for them to arrive, if they do at all. DUI is a big county revenue source and that's why they arrest people for it. Duemig will buy his way out of this. It will run him $18-$20k with the attorney and the payoffs, but this will be nothing more than a nuisance for him, like a pimple on the asss. This will go away and all will be right with the world.

A sad, sad day for the Tampa Bay community and family. I pray for his family and that he is helped with his severe alcohol addiction.

Hang in there Steve, and disregard the haters.

I didn't listen to the show so all I have to go in are the contents of the quotes listed in the article. Based on that, it sounds like he's sorrier about getting caught than actually doing something wrong. That, and the comments about it being something that can happen to anybody (echoed frighteningly by more than a few commenters) are pretty disturbing sentiments. Drinking and driving is the stupidest thing a person can ever get in trouble for because it's 100% preventable. There are always alternatives and to ignore them because it's inconvenient is stupid and selfish.

So, Big Dawg, forget the radion station...how much shame did you bring to your daugther with your DUI?
If WDAE continues to employ this sorry excuse for a sports broadcaster, MADD should be picekting outside of their offices every day.
And you wonder why people decry the lack of integirty in the business of journalism and broadcasting...here's a classic example.
Steve Duemig is the drunken slob your mother warned you about!
And even I could do a better job as a sports show talk host than this prejudicial lame brain.
Give it up, you "Big Dawg" --- get back in that Lexus and get the hell out of town. We don't need you here any more.

The Big Dog will do nothing more but hire a high profile defense attorney that is experienced in defending DUI Cases. Go through the whole legal process, & settle the matter in court. Without going to trial, and wasting the taxpayers money.
The deputies will collect their witness fees, and investigative costs. And move on to arrest the next DUI offender they come across.
If the Big Dog was at the Venue that night. Why did he not go out of the back enterance of the parking lot of the Venue. That takes him right into his Feather Sound Neighborhood. Without driving onto Ulmerton Road.

Bashers coming out of the woodwork? Wow! All this, "In your face", attitude? Got to love, the lecturous, high-almighty folks who lead such exemplary lives.....
Looks just like all the Democrats I follow with bumper stickers all over their cars blaming everyone else.....
How about some sollutions? Let the guy pay his price and his dues to society..... It will be stiff. Maybe this time he will get it.
As for the rest of the Hipocrites? Look in the mirror.

And this is news? Some drunken, sorry, sloven, slob gets a DUI and this is newsworthy? Good God, I'd rather read about Leona Helmsley's dog than this.

Some of the posters on this message board seem to be possessed by Satan and his wickedness. Mr. Duemig is a human being with a soul. We all need to pray for him so he can win the battle of this terrible disease known as "chronic severe alcoholism." He will be in my thoughts tonight when I go to bed.

Steve is due his day in court.I should say when you beat all the test like I did you can win very easily. So people need to stop being cheap shot artists at duemigs expence.

The cops aren't always right, just ask Cato June. They dumped his charge so fast their heads spun because they knew it was a bogus arrest. There are many crooked cops out there. many good ones, but MANY crooked ones too. I hope he'll beat the rap.

if you have ever listened to steve's show he actually defends and makes excuses for drunk drivers. just like in his statement.."i was in the driveway"/ "more drive [drunk] than dont"/ "you are lucky if youve not been pulled over". He is disgusting. what if he hurt someone? i bet my husband he had at least 1 DUI so i was not shocked. ive always called him steve DUImig.

Steve's command of the English language is that of a pre texting era 5th grader. His ratings are high because he picks a side then spews his venom. I have never heard him offer any insight only mangled metaphors and he NEVER lets facts get in the way of his argument. Driving a block while drunk is to far. Get out and walk!!

Duemig, Beckles, and Diaz are the Three Stooges of sports talk radio in Tampa Bay...not an original thought in the idiotic brains of any of them...and Sileo...well, he missed his calling at Disney World when someone else got hired to play Goofy.
Posted by: Tom M | June 16, 2008 at 11:27 PM
MR. DUIMIG IS CLEARLY AN ALCOHOLIC HOPEFULLY HE GETS THE HELP HE NEEDS BECAUSE IF NOT HE WILL BE WEARING TOETAGS INSIDE OF TWO YEARS BECAUSE HE IS OBESE AND TOO OLD TO BE POUNDING BOOZE LIKE AN 18 YEAR OLD.
