OK, just in the spirit of full disclosure: It was two cookies. One oatmeal raisin, one chocolate chocolate chip. Very good. And literally lasted longer than Leavitt.

Thomas Simonetti

"Reporters drove in from Bradenton, from Lakeland, from TV affiliates all over the Tampa area, and they left with a soda, sandwich, potato salad, chips and a cookie."

A cookie? Be honest, Greg. You know you ate at least three.

Unless I'm neglecting to remember someone, the last time a 'name starter' was academically ineligible for FSU was last season (2005). It was starting defensive lineman Clifton Dickson. Prior to that a notable name that sticks out would be starting QB Chris Rix (ineligible for the bowl game due to FSU rules regarding exams) and starting WR Marvin Minnis (ineligible for BCS Championship Game vs. Oklahoma due to poor fall semester grades). Minnis actually walked at graduation, but as it turned out, didn't officially graduate and missed the game.

Greg,
Always appreciate your candor w/USF sports, not just football. CJL has a job to do on the field and I believe he wants his kids and coaches to stay focused. It's been a tough off-season after a very good year in 05. Don't take it personal.

Go Bulls!

So, Leavitt is losing control and Bowden and Coker are in control?? You have got to be kidding......The difference is that due to their historical football excellence, those schools are deeper so the loss of a few players does not affect them as much. When is the last time we heard about a "name starter" (ala Watson) from "the U," FSU or UF being academically ineligible? It ain't gonna happen.....I am glad USF seems to have good players to step-up and play. This year may not be the best from the standpoint of the record, but it could set the stage for "better character" of the team in the future.

LOL ... crasy how some think Leavitt is losing control.

Far Far From It !

Go BULLS !!!

Jim is being childish. He has created this mess by the way he is running this program. He has let many of these players slip or push the rules. Just look at Terrance Royals on national TV a few years back when he was yelling at Jim.

It appears he is losing control and for some reason, he thinks this will help him regain it. I hope for his sake it works, but something tells me that it is going to backfire.

Bill in Clearwater

I honestly think the printing of the suspensions has started this hole process. Jim is mad and everyone in the media is going to get the bland interviews as a punishment

John sabin

Beside all this controversy, how is Andre Hall doing with the Chicago Bears ?

Rick Gershman

The headline quote is clearly from Leavitt, not from you, Greg. Because that post was long. Loooong long. You're breaking the Eric Deggans record for long-ass blog posts, brother.

Still, fascinating stuff. And good insight into how sports journalism works behind the scenes.

Meanwhile, you've made me that much happier I don't write sports anymore... :)

I say Leavitt is being "open." These infractions go on with other universities, but you never hear about them. What you hear about at those schools is someone choking two women, someone taking thousands of dollars for doing nothing, someone pointing a gun at people, etc. At USF you are hearing about teenagers who smoked pot, and academic ineligibility. These guys made a mistake, but they are not threatening people's well being.

I'll take pot and a "D" over guns and beating women.

Doug Currier II

Now, just remember, when you get a 15-20 minute interview/press conference with Leavitt, don't complain about "coach speak" and cliches. Not that any member of the media ever complains about that...

What's the point?

I know the point. He's trying to get the media off his back. USF has had a lousy off-season with academic problems, drug problems, arrest problems, recruiting problems and now he is being called out by the media on it. He's just dodging the questions because it's starting to look bad on him and the USF program.
Why make everyone in the USF program shut up? So nothing else gets out that doesn't look good for USF. There are still questions about several players academics standing, questions about the players failing drug tests and if he's going to shorten the suspensions (WHY!?), questions about the quarterbacks who haven't looked too good in the past, etc. There are questions surrounding the entire program right now and Levitt doesn't like it because none of them are positive.
What I really want to know is, how much is Leavitt hiding?

Greg - He is, of course, steamed about the info on the suspended players. I can understand that....BUT.....the public does buy the tickets. I think the community would embrace the program more if he opened up a little.

He has to be worried about McNeese and afterward. There are a lot of "new" players. I have to believe Watson is grades and they are awaiting a ruling on eligibility. The Monday depth chart on the offensive line was interesting.

St.LouisBull

Let's be fair. You could have taken two sodas. And those sandwiches are pretty good.

E.T. Thomas

Thanx for a great blog Greg!

We know how Leavitt is with the media ... and this lately (I HOPE) is just a small bump in the road of being able to report on USF Football.

It's no secret he is upset (wasn't sure if pissed is allowed here) at a cetain reporter and agree that he should not take it out on all the media.

Ryan Roark

Man, those interviews were exhausting just to read. I mean, how do you deal with that?? Leavitt's got to be the worst interview in college sports. I love what he's done to build this program, no doubt, but he's got to put his personal feelings about the media aside and understand that this is a SIGNIFICANT part of a Big East football coach's job. That's the reason he's making seven figures! Get over it, coach! You actually have a few fans out here, ya' know?!?!

As publicity savvy as Genshaft is, this can't sit well with her. It will be interesting to see if she or Woolard take Jim into the 'woodshed' for a little talk.

Arrogance is ugly, period.
