Grothe named to Maxwell watch list

USF sophomore quarterback Matt Grothe is one of 65 players named to the watch list for the Maxwell Award, given to college football's most outstanding player.

Grothe, last year's Big East Rookie of the Year, is the first USF player named to the Maxwell list. Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn won the award in 2006. He's one of only 10 sophomores on the list, and one of five players from Florida schools, joining FSU receiver Greg Carr and Florida's Percy Harvin, Andre Caldwell and Tim Tebow.

He's also one of eight Big East players on the watch list, with Rutgers running back Ray Rice, West Virginia's Steve Slaton and Pat White, Louisville quarterback Brian Brohm and receivers Harry Douglas and Mario Urrutia and Pittsburgh receiver Derek Kinder.

oh hell yeah!

expectations are starting to get a little out of hand.

Grothe is good, but he isn't a "Maxwell" award winner.

Come on guys.

This season is worrying me. We could have a hugh let down.

CJL needs to get the expectations in check.

We need a Lou Holtz to remind his team that we aren't that good.

All of these expectactions and lists are starting to scare the _____ out of me. I guess we can't sneak up on anybody this year.

I think with what happened with Rutgers and Boise St. last year alot of the media is looking for a darling. However, I'm not sure anyone should complain about the team getting a little media hype ... if nothing else it will help recruiting. CJL will keep the guys grounded.

You can't help but be excited about the potential for next season ... I don't see undefeated but with the secondary we have, the D-line, and so many returning players ... a 2-3 loss season with some time with a ranking number next to our logo on TV won't be that overly high an expectation.

I don't think any fan should discount Grothe being on this list ... his numbers last year show the potential for it ... he has as much merit there as the other two quarterbacks from the Big East based on his performance last season.

Pat the kid on the back and expect him to keep getting better ... a few more years of solid quarterback play will be a welcome thing for bulls fans.

How is Tebow on that list he hasen't even started a game yet.

Exactly ... at least Grothe has some stats to put him into conversation ...

I guess the figure in that offense a running QB that can throw has the potential to put up big numbers. Right now USF has the best college QB in this state. If he continues to develop (less turnovers) he could be amazing. He has the ability to take us to the promised land.

Agreed on the potential for Grothe. His turnover ratio is a bit inflated with some last minute bombs into the end-zone that didn't go as planned, but that is something to improve on.

I think the receivers are going to prove to be capable of helping him as well. I am really excited at the apparent speed we are getting at receiver with some of the younger players stepping up. It may be hard to replace Randolph, but there are some guys in that core that have proven to be big impact players. Hopefully, they keep it up.
