USF defensive end George Selvie, leading the nation with 13.5 sacks and 27.5 tackles for loss, is not among the four finalists for the Lombardi Award, given to the nation's top lineman.
LSU's Glenn Dorsey, Virginia's Chris Long, Michigan's Jake Long and Ohio State linebacker James Laurinaitis are the finalists -- linebackers are eligible if they primarily line up at the line of scrimmage.
The first three finalists are seniors, and Laurinaitis is considered a possibility to leave early for the NFL Draft, so Selvie would easily be a front-runner for next year's award. Selvie is still a strong candidate to be a consensus first-team All-America at defensive end. He needs five tackles for loss in his last three games to break the NCAA record of 32, and he would need seven sacks to break the Big East sack record, set by Louisville's Elvis Dumervil.

Times sportswriter Greg Auman, who covers USF, will post news and thoughts on the Bulletin and we invite your participation in the comments area.
dave, a lot of IF's there, but if you wanna play that game, then IF we recruited better and had better gameplanning (like not falling for stupid fake FG's and punts), THEN we wouldnt have looked like fools to the national media.. plummeting from #2 to nothing in a month.
let's see here: problems with RECRUITING and GAMEPLANNING-- who is in charge of those to aspects? i'll let you fill in the blank.

Only cee can find fault when a guy gets 4 tackles for loss in a game. Let me guess, if Selvie had been 5*, he would've had 20 tackles for loss, because these things must be mathematically correlated.
Posted by: Dave W | November 08, 2007 at 11:40 PM
those obviously weren't enough. which is why he missed the cut and why we are 1-3 against conference foes.
Posted by: cee | November 08, 2007 at 11:12 PM
He had 2 sacks against UConn. He had 4 Tackles for loss against Cincinnati but no sacks.

I have watched the last 3 games and haven't seen Selvey's name called. Did he get all his sacks early in the year?
Posted by: jt | November 08, 2007 at 06:46 PM
Maybe because 1/3 of his sacks came against ELON!!!!! USF is sorry and the fans are big babies!!!!

Cricket? What next? Kabadi?
Posted by: Sanjay | November 07, 2007 at 01:17 PM
13.5 sacks, 27.5 tackles for a loss, how does he NOT make the final cut? Maybe, the award should go to Dorsey, but you can't argue that Selvie shouldn't be one of the other 3. Our scedule is competitive enough for him to have been challenged in the same way. This is PURE school name recognition or again (like the H-award, blindly linked to wins, even though there is very little a D-lineman can do about dropped passes or missed feild goals.

Why would anyone really take a guy who posts by the name of "Sanjay" seriously?
This is a football thread ... we're not talking cricket here my friend!
PEACE

I think Sanjay's got his Sarcasm Caps Lock on and doesn't realize it.
And guys, I can track the comments here, so I'll go ahead and share a secret: there are lots of anonymous posters. Not just one guy by any means. Unless you're posting with a name linked to an e-mail, it's still pretty anonymous to me. Some of you guys are here enough to have built reputations for yourselves, so you have that to live up to, which is good.

We all know that all SEC football players go to all their classes and never fail out. Right? I am sure George Selvie would not have a problem academically at an SEC school.

J at 8:00. Tongue-in-cheek man. I was just mocking some of the chicken-littles who post on the blog. Relax. I think CJL has done a great job building the program to where it is now. Is he the guy to take the program on the next huge step upwards, I don't know and am not convinced he is. However, he has earned the right to try.

Who keeps posting that garbage with no name. Man up coward, drop a name so we can track your rediculous statements.

Hey 7:46, so you happen to know selvie's class attendance record or are you just an idiot talkig crap? It amazes me the people that get on here and say bad things about kids they don't even know. What morons! GO BULLS!!

Sanjay, you are a riot with the "CJL sux" comment about Selvie not winning the award because he wasn't a 5-star recruit. While you are probably right that he's not a finalist largely because he wasn't a 5-star recruit, linking that to "CJL sux" is almost idiotic. Keep in mind that if it weren't for Leavitt, no one would have ever heard of Selvie. He was a 1-star offensive lineman with no other Division 1 offers (not just 1-A, Div. 1). Leavitt was the one that had the forsight to recruit him and move him to D-Line. It was a great move for Selvie and he's now one of the best D-Ends in the nation and will no doubt be playing on Sundays in a couple years. Leavitt and his coaching staff may have had some bad game calls these last few weeks, but they are amazingly insightful recruiters.

"If Selvie played at an SEC or Big 10 power he'd be in the top 4."
If Selvie played at an SEC or Big 10 school he would have to go to class!
Posted by: | November 06, 2007 at 07:46 PM
When you lose 3 straight and your name isn't called in any of the games your going to drop out. USF is unraveling.
Posted by: | November 06, 2007 at 05:55 PM
I don't know mcuh about the other players, but Selvie's a sophomore. He wasn't particularly dominant last year--I'd rather think that adding him to the list this year was a huge compliment, rather than leaving him off originally (or his not being a finalist) an insult to him or the team. He'll have a real shot of winning it next year.
Posted by: Ken | November 06, 2007 at 05:50 PM
It's tough to argue against those guys ahead of him, though. Long has probably been more important to UVA's success (they don't have the same talent level we do), the Big 10 guys are fantastic players, with Laurinitis having great stats on an undefeated team and I'm sure that Long has graded out extremely well, and Dorsey is one of the most dominant guys on the inside, even without the numbers. I think that Ari is right- the losses really hurt his case (especially with the 0-fer at RU during our biggest game ever).

If Selvie played at an SEC or Big 10 power he'd be in the top 4.
Posted by: Kyle | November 06, 2007 at 04:54 PM
First the Lombardi people leave him off the watch list. Now he is not one of the 4 finalists. If he had been a 5-star recruit they would have given him the damn award already. CJL sux.
Posted by: Sanjay | November 06, 2007 at 04:47 PM
The other players are much more established. It's about name recognition -- Selvie wasn't even on the watch list for this award until just before the semifinal deadline. Selvie's in good position to be a favorite for this next season.
Posted by: G.A. | November 06, 2007 at 04:45 PM
That is BS.
Posted by: Blake | November 06, 2007 at 04:37 PM
How does a guy that has a chance to break those records not make the list?
Posted by: Windbane | November 06, 2007 at 04:37 PM
Yeah he is.
This was a big break out season.
Those guys are on defenses ranked 25 or better, (OSU-1, LSU-2, Mich-20, and Virg-25, and just for good measure USF-18)
Posted by: GP | November 06, 2007 at 04:36 PM
I bet he wouldn't have missed that cut if didn't lose three in a row.
Guy is a stud.
