Just the update you guys have been waiting for: former USF assistants Rod Smith and Greg Frey have notified West Virginia athletic director Ed Pastilong they intend to follow former Mountaineers coach Rich Rodriguez to Michigan, the MetroNews of West Virginia reported Friday.
Smith and Frey were in limbo after Rodriguez accepted the Michigan job, but it appears both will have spots on his Wolverines staff. Smith and Rodriguez have known each other since Smith was his quarterback at Glenville State; Frey had no ties to Rodriguez until this season but clearly showed enough to make him Rodriguez's choice to coach his offensive line at Michigan. Former USF assistant Calvin Magee has already been announced as Rodriguez's offensive coordinator.
Yes, I know you want an update on the Ben Moffitt situation, and we'll have something later tonight. Big games Saturday for USF's men's and women's basketball teams, and I can report that forward Amu Saaka, who broke his nose during Wednesday's win against Rutgers, practiced with a specially fitted mask over his face Thursday and will be able to play with the mask on during USF's game at Syracuse. Coach Stan Heath has not decided whether he'll start Saaka or freshman Orane Chin, who had nine points Wednesday, getting most of the minutes at power forward after Saaka's injury.

Times sportswriter Greg Auman, who covers USF, will post news and thoughts on the Bulletin and we invite your participation in the comments area.
hey it could be worse...

Strange as it sounds, I can't bring myself to delete that last comment.

I was talking to the guy at the truck stop at 301 and Dade City about this Ben Moffitt story and he said he hadn't heard.
I just ordered some grits and talked about "Little E's" new ride next year.
Oh well.

Man. The Moffitt stuff is not about him and his wife getting divorced. If that was the whole story, it wouldn't have been front-page news. It wouldn't have been anything.
It's a story because she said he cheated his way through college. It seems to only tell her side of the story, but Moffitt said he didn't want to comment. So it'll stay a story until everything is cleared through the school and the ncaa.

Well judging by the 208 replies to the Moffitt story and the fact that almost all replies to this story are also related to Moffitt, I think some people are looking for more information. I agree, it is a personal matter and Mrs. Moffitt should have kept it that way, but you guys can't blame Greg.
More importantly, Greg do you get to see basketball practices? I was just wondering how well Saaka had adjusted to the mask. He obviously wasn't a big fan of wearing it Wednesday night.

People really need to freakin chill out. A bunch of babies you'll sound like. Ben Moffitt plays for a Div.I program therefore his success or failures will be pointed out to the public. Greg is the best "beat" writer USF could ever ask for. All of ya'll haters need to shut up and quit complaining.

It's understandable to hold back judgement on Moffitt until both sides of the story are presented, but there is absolutely no reason to attack Greg. He's simply doing his job by reporting what he was told by someone he considers to be a reliable source. Some of you only want to hear the good news about USF, but the reality is that if a story is newsworthy -- even if it's negative -- it's Greg's job to report on it.
Don't kill the messenger.

He's a college student, I'm a man, I thought you were a man, your paper is garbage, and you Greg Auman are GARBAGE.

No, I do not want to hear about an update on Moffitt's divorce proceedings. Thats a PERSONAL matter between him and her and their lawyers, to make a front page story about her side of the story sounds more from what I expect from a cheap tabloid not a responsible one. I am very dissapointed at how this issue has been covered and I must say I have lost a lot of respect for the St. Pete Times.
Im not saying that negative reports USF related should not be published but we all know divorce trials get ugly and many lies are told in them. I could have seen you saying Moffitt is going thru a divorce and leave at that until the facts and the divorce is final.
As I said I am very dissapointed.

I like your work a lot, Greg, but no, I'm not waiting for a Moffitt update--rather, I'd like to read a piece on our basketball team and the game tomorrow, and read what people have to say about that.

usf needs a new beat writer

I still like you, Greg.

I've lost all my respect for you, Greg.
Nobody's asking all your stories to be positive, but you crossed a line.
Update on Moffitt? don't bother.

WOW.... a post about something sports related. Finally...

i know a few guys in that news room. They're getting a huge chuckle over the stir this is causing. It's probably half the reason they continue.

He's not listening to his readers:
"Yes, I know you want an update on the Ben Moffitt situation"
No, no we don't.
Posted by: Chet Humphrey | January 04, 2008 at 05:33 PM
Agreed... leave the Moffitt situation alone. It's trash reporting and Greg, you're better than that. Stick to covering the Bulls and not the local bitter wife/divorce court proceedings.
Posted by: Jerome | January 04, 2008 at 05:28 PM
what could you possibly 'update' us on the Ben Moffitt situation? Were you classy enough to interview the children or are you polling people in Tavares and Sumter on their opinion of the couple.
You all give TMZ a run for their money!

Oh snap.
We need to schedule with Michigan.
