Chin receives release
Freshman forward Orane Chin has been granted permission to seek a transfer to another institution, USF men's basketball coach Stan Heath announced in a news release.
Chin is the fourth player since the end of the season and sixth under Heath to receive a release.
Chin averaged 3.9 points and 2.9 rebounds in 30 games this past season.

Even his own guys can't cut it? Yikes. Something is very, very wrong when half of the team transfers. To say that I am worried about next year's team is an understatement. I also highly doubt his ability to grab 4/5 immediate impact, Big East level players in such a short amount of time.
Chin was not a Big East level player, that was obvious. But right now, we don't have enough warm bodies for a scrimmage.

Let me see, when does basketball season start again, what November, no really it is in November.
I will say this about Stan he is becoming more like Tom Izzo everyday. From what I understand if this version of Stan was around the previous years he would still be at Arkansas despite the unfair politics.

Champ, While it does start in November, all the good talent for the next season is signed at that point as well. The leftovers fall through to the late signing period, which we are coming upon shortly. The leftovers usually are kids with some sort of question mark. Sort of like Chin last year. Obviously that didnt work out. Chin, regardless of talent, was going to get alot of minutes next year. He had one thing no one else has. SIZE! I guess Teague comes in and starts from game 1. Kind of scary. I hope Greg is right about Akol, because even he would be an extreme upgrade at this point. Next season is sealed by May, so it doesnt matter when November is....Stan has never been known as a great coach, so his big skill of recruiting better come through huge. Of course, I forgot he is getting Boynton for next year......

reality you just won me $20.
I knew you would respond fast to me right after I sort of responed to Dave W.
Any news that can be looked at as gloomy seems to draw out you and Dave W quicker then a hiccup, especially if the name "The Champ" appears as a recent post.
Now back to subject at hand.I'm sure Chin departure will not be a surpise if we all knew what he had to do or show in order to stay a Bull.I like the kid but a poor attitude towards putting in work will get you showed the door fast.
That could be the reason for the separation but I'm not 100% sure yet.
I will just wait until the truth comes out if at all, and keep following recruiting as I have almost everyday since the beginning of the year.

People have to give Coach Heath some time. You people act like USF has been UCLA, Indiana or Kentucky. I forgot that we have won consistently in the past. As an alum, we never were very good when Mac was here, or Greenburg for that matter. A rebuilding project takes 5 YEARS. Not 1 or 2 years, but a whole 5. This will only be year 2. When this group of players becomes seniors and graduate, then we can all correctly evaluate Coach Heath as a coach and a recruiter, but until then be a fan or not. Ride it out or not. Give him a chance to make his presence felt with his roster. Let him make his own mark on the program by bringing in his players or players that fit into his system. He WILL get a few good players, not GREAT ones yet. All it takes is one hotshot to transform a program. If Mayo can go to USC or Beasley to K-State or Ech 09' and Rosario and possibly Ebanks to Rutgers, then anything can happen. Stan Heath I do hope that you get 2-3 quality bigs and possibly a shooter this year. They will be quality players. Then, go after the STAR players next season.

Wasn't Chin a Stan Heath recruit??
Im a little lost on this one.
Oh well.
Posted by: Ari Hinkelberger | April 10, 2008 at 04:55 PM
Now, we have to see what will happen with Aris Williams. Will he stay or be shown the door?
And yes Ari he was a Heath recruit, but if you can't cut it, you just can't cut it. It shows that he shows no bias' towards "his" players. He just wants players that can actually play and is willing to work and I applaud him for that.
Posted by: AGW | April 10, 2008 at 05:07 PM
As high as Chin can jump his attitude towards work and the university is just as low.
Let's just say Chin earned his release, so see ya!
Now back to enjoying who will be the next to commit to USF, Simmons, Faber, surpise name, a transfer, or a name from the past.Whoever it might be I doubt he pulls a "Chin."
BTW good write up AGW.

Champ,
Don't lump Dave W in with me. Dave is probably the best poster on this board. He is one of the few students that actually cares, and is very levelheaded. I on the other hand can't stand to see USF screw around when it comes to basketball, and I let it be known. Heath is not getting it done. I cant wait until next week, as I am excited to see what Stan can deliver to fill all these holes he has created. The roster is SOOOOO thin for next year, and all the Juco's in the world are not going to put the Bulls back together again. We better be bringing in 3 Juco's or else 0-18 is a LOCK for next year.

Are there any APR implications that go along with all of these guys leaving? Will we end up losing scholarships in the long run?
Posted by: Rich | April 10, 2008 at 07:41 PM
Aris Williams needs to be the last to be shown the door, he is taking up a scholarship.
Posted by: Tom | April 10, 2008 at 08:03 PM
That's a good question, Rich. We may be screwed on APR.
Thanks for the love, Reality. You and Champ provide opposite ends of the spectrum needed for debate. I merely synthesize the best opinions presented. Out of 40000+ students, maybe 5,000 can name three basketball players.
And as long as Champ feels like attacking me, I guess I'll respond just once. Having invested so much time and energy in USF athletics (actually, anything USF related), I am quite aware of how things work around here. I know what is good and bad; the basketball team has a lot of bad vibes right now. For football, I post the negatives because that is what the team is addressing right now as Spring Ball wraps up. After we crush Kansas this season, I'll tell you just how good the returning athletes on defense really are and that Demetris Murray is going to be an amazing player. But for now, we have depth problems on both lines and question marks at CB, KR, most evident, K.
The problem with Chin leaving as Heath's first high school recruit is that with all of the other defections, it makes Stan look impatient and tells a HS kid that if you can't cut it right away, you'll get no slack. That could drive away a guy like Chin who really needed to hit the weight room.
Posted by: Dave W | April 10, 2008 at 08:10 PM
the man has been coaching here only 1 year and fans here are already turned on him. disgraceful
Posted by: jon | April 10, 2008 at 08:17 PM
Dave you dont know why Chin was released. Given Champ's history of being right and obviously having some well placed sources of info, I have to believe theres more to this than we know.
Posted by: Nailz | April 10, 2008 at 08:36 PM
I haven't turned on Heath.
Guy turned around a horrible Ark program. It took him about 3 years to get it out of the gutter.
I say it takes him 4 years to get USF to 20-12.
I have faith.
I also think Mercer is the biggest signee that USF has had in a long long time. Guy was SEC freshmen of the year i think.
Mercer and Jones is a great duo. Now we just need two bigs to be an average Big East team.
Posted by: Ari Hinkelberger | April 10, 2008 at 08:56 PM
im not talking about you ari, i pretty much agree with a lot you say, along with agw, and the champ
Posted by: jon | April 10, 2008 at 09:06 PM
Winning cures everything. All of these so called fans that have turned on Stan Heath already will jump right back on the bandwagon if he ever gets them to 20-12 and a NCAA tournament. I promise you that. Its just like our football fans. We jumped on the bandwagon and finally started to pack Ray Jay once we made the top 25. Where was everyone during all those of 8+ win seasons? Basketball will be no different, trust me. Just give Coach Heath time and he will work everything out just like he has everywhere else. Everyone talks highly of him in coaching circles.
Posted by: AGW | April 10, 2008 at 09:53 PM
Also, Chin didn't need to balk up or hit the weight room like someone mentioned earlier, he needed to work on his perimeter games, as the only way he was a BE player was as a 3. Also, playing with passion and desire would have helped.
Posted by: AGW | April 10, 2008 at 09:56 PM
Well as I was reminded about Chin, he once checked in the St. John's game with a backwards jersey on.As my friend said that is all you need to know about Mister Chin.
Chin was given chances to show the coaching staff and his teammates that he wanted to be a part of this program.
Well let's just say Chin gave the middle finger to his now former coaches, teammates, and fans.Like I said earlier Chin earned his release and we all should move on without worring about the situation, because he sure as h*** didn't worry about us.Forget the guy.
If USF fans want to show their love and support to the school well just show up for the spring fb game with signs and creative chants for Krys Faber as he might just be there.
Show this guy how much we want him and how much we love the university. This guy is our starting center if we get him.
Posted by: The Champ | April 10, 2008 at 09:57 PM
I have this feeling that Stan Heath is a hard guy to play for..
Doesn't bother me, but I have a hunch its true.
Its just really ironic...This is the same thing that Mac did. Came in and ran everyone off. I have never liked this strategy, but new management in any field tends to do this.
I guess its all about changing the culture. I still think you can change the culture of the team and without getting rid of 85% of the players
I thought it was dumb move by mac and I think its a bit of an over reach by Stan.
But he gets the big bucks - not me.
Posted by: Ari Hinkelberger | April 10, 2008 at 11:57 PM
Great idea Champ regarding the chants and signs for Faber. USF Vote Faber in 08'. I think the fans at USF should take heed to this idea b/c we really need this guy badly. Then, everyone needs to pray for Akol to get a qualifying test score. Then hopefully we can get a JUCO player(s) to help us out on the wings. Need a shooter. Any idea how many scholarships we now have available? I think its 4 now right, maybe 3....With the possibility for 4 or 5 depending on Williams.
Posted by: AGW | April 11, 2008 at 12:10 AM
Great idea guys...but you think you can get USF fans who cant name our coach or players to yell for a recruit? Never happen.
Again Ari, Mac didnt chase off guys, guys ran from him. Remember Jimmy Baxter? I see where your comparison is coming from in general but its not the same. I am now extremely concerned about next year. I always liked CHin but he grew on me in out of conference games and was my guy so I stuck with him, even in his poor conference play. But maybe he should go. Wheres my guy who told me I was an idiot for agreeing with Reality about Florida Southern and U of Tampa having a better frontcourt? Our roster being thin for next year is an understatement.
You think if I take some grad classes they will let me try out? My jumpshot it water right now.

If I was Coach Heath and Aris does end up leaving the program I would try to use those two scholarships on players that are high-risk, high-reward with the hopes that they work out and change around the program if not he should take the approach that they were better than Chin or Williams. Here are a few names to consider:
Bud Mackey (pg/sg), Darnell Dodson (sf), Clarence Trent (sf/pf), Kiwan Smith (sf), Leon Freeman (pg/sg), Joey Cameron (pf). If not he could always go after players like Tyrone Armstrong Jr., David Diakite, Chris Early, Aziz N'Diaye, Ken Moore and Sampson Carter. Just to throw some names out there. Hey, we suck, so take a chance on some troubled but talented kids. Its worked for other schools sometimes. You just have to hope their troubles are behind them. I know I'm going to take heat for this.
Posted by: AGW | April 11, 2008 at 12:49 AM
No heat from me AGW. I'll take a few years of probabtion for a couple of years of glory.
Bad press is press. Right now we get none.
Posted by: Herman Momart | April 11, 2008 at 12:58 AM
You get none? Et tu, Herm?
I'm not making a suggestion by any means, but I just want to be the first guy here to drop the phrase "Faber College." It's too easy, guys.
Posted by: G.A. | April 11, 2008 at 01:13 AM
We get great press here in Tampa. I can honestly say I read the Tampa newspapers more than I ever read NY papers. And they are supposed to be the media capitol of world. I meant press nationwide. Sportscenter status, you know what I mean.
Posted by: Herman Momart | April 11, 2008 at 01:34 AM
I agree with Herm. We need to get some explosive players who are bring attention to our basketball program. Whether it is good or bad, it doesn't matter as long as people are saying our name north of Fletcher.
Posted by: jarred | April 11, 2008 at 03:43 AM
Great, let's bring in all the criminals. AGW, I cant believe you actually think that is a good idea.
Bud Mackey???? Do we not have enough drugs on campus?
Joey Cameron? Do you know why he left Seton Hall?
Trent 09 recruit no?
Leon Freeman, Can't read, and has bullet particles in his body.
Are these the kinds of kids you really want?
Is winning that important to put other students at risk?
Posted by: reality | April 11, 2008 at 08:26 AM
I'm sure Coach Heath has a plan for all of the spots he needs to fill. I think it's great he has the spots available. It would be much worse if we could get some better players but had no scholarships to offer. And as far as Chin, I have never seen a player put his jersey on backwards. Enough said.
Posted by: DJ | April 11, 2008 at 09:50 AM
Yes, these are the guys I am willing to take a chance on. Right now is the only time we could get in on a guy like Bud Mackey. OK State turned out "ok" with Jameson Curry. They took a lot of heat for accepting him after the UNC dismissal and he was thankful and didn't cause any problems in Stillwater. The same could be said for Mackey and Kreft. I say go for it. But I do understand your gripe.
Posted by: AGW | April 11, 2008 at 12:33 PM
I thought the idea of getting Bob Huggins 2 years ago was never the direction USF wanted to go? It sure seems like it now, with the rejects with attitudes via prep school coming our way, it's suddenly turned USF into a swap-shop in the sun.
