Here's list of BCS ranked teams from #s 50-70 - with USF ranked #54. Since there's 120 1-A schools (I was amazed at that #), USF is ranked at about the middle (60). So, on a positive note, there's 66 1-A schools doing worse than the Bulls, but on a negative note, there's 53 schools ranked higher. I guess it's the half-full, half-empty thing when it comes to USF so far this year! Here's that list: 50 Clemson, 51 Kentucky, 52 Rice, 53 Rutgers, 54 USF, 55 Buffalo, 56 Nevada, 57 Colorado, 58 Hawaii, Arkansas and East Carolina, 61 Arizona and Duke, 63 Illinois, 64 Colo. St, 65 Fresno and La. Tech, 67 Stanford and N.C. State, 69 Houston, 70 Troy and Louisville.

Richard, I would say that injuries, turnovers and the lack of playmakers on both sides of the ball are greater problems than the lack of understanding of USF's schemes on offense and defense.

Adding Notre Dame would be a no-brainer -- they're already in the Big East for everything but football, so it's the simplest solution. Ideal. And it won't happen -- why would Notre Dame give up the huge TV contract they have all to themselves? They don't need the Big East in football.

And why Navy? Remember, this is a union of 16 schools with relationships -- why would they vote out an existing member to add a school that wouldn't be any kind of upgrade in football (beyond the relief of less scheduling woes) and would move into the bottom four in basketball -- they're a mediocre team in the Patriot League. Yes, David Robinson played there, but it was 20 years ago.

No, the Big East would not kick out an existing member to get Navy on board as a full-time member.

Greg, one of the reasons mentioned most by Big East officials for not expanding team/s for football, is that they don't want their basketball teams to exceed 16. In your opinion, if the BE had a chance to add ND and or Navy, would BE drop one or two non-football playing teams to add more for football and which schools would be best bet to be deleted?

Richard Todd

I am curious - in the transcript you said there were more significant things then acedemics/football smarts contributing to the four loses. Had you already covered those or are they something else not mentioned yet ? If so what might they be ?

Clanton is announcing his decision Wednesday at 1 p.m. ... It's down to UCF and USF -- the Bulls were the first program to offer him, and Heath's been on him from the start. He's said he likes both schools and both coaching staffs, so I think the decision comes down to whether he feels confident enough to play in a conference like the Big East, with tough opponents throughout conference play, or in Conference USA, where there would be more winning but less significance to those wins.

It could be a case where the challenge of playing in the Big East works against USF. The Bulls have dominated UCF head-to-head -- they have the series edge 18-4 and have won nine in a row. UCF has beaten the Bulls once in the last 30 years -- though they could pull it off again Dec. 6 when USF goes to Orlando.

Which school has an easier path to the postseason? USF would obviously have to make huge strides to get there, but UCF had 22 wins two years ago and didn't even make the NIT. There's just not a strong perception of Conference USA basketball nationally -- Memphis is a great program, but there's not much else.

UCF has made the NCAA Tournament -- as recently as '04 and '05 -- but did so by winning the Atlantic Sun tournament, something they can't do anymore.

Clanton has grown up in Orlando, so he's more familiar with UCF, and it'll be very close to home for him. And Reggie Kohn is a former USF player, but he also hasn't coached him in a game yet, and wouldn't pressure the kid, allowing him to make his own decision.

Mike Lakeland

Once again, great stuff Greg. You are definitely committed to writing for USF. I have a non-USF related question for you:

Did you play any sports in high school and/or college (yes, intramural counts!)? If so, what position(s) did you play?

Thanks.

Reality

Greg, any truth to the rumor that Keith Clanton chose to play for UCF over playing for Stan Heath? Mentored by Reggie Kohn and playing in a real conference and we lose this kid. This is a DAGGER.

G.A.

TJ -- just not my place to say such things. And honestly, I don't think those are decisions that Doug Woolard makes -- I think he puts enough trust in Leavitt that the head coach makes the staff decisions.

TJ

Damn was my question going to burn bridges if you answered? If so then good thing you didn't answer it.

I think the scheduling has been just awful this year (for FB). Impossible to say whether it has really hurt us in terms of wins, but we don't seem to do very well on Thursdays after 5 days, or with the long 16 day layoffs. I guess the long ones are good for recruiting trips, but maybe the coaches should use that time differently?

I can't imagine that BJD is going to play this year unless we are hopelessly ahead or behind, and CSH decides to toss him a few minutes.

G.A.

I have big ears, yes. Thanks much.

Ch

All in good fun of course...Thanks for answering my question! Much Respect...
