USF quarterback Matt Grothe is looking like the guy who led the Bulls to a 5-0 start -- he's thrown for 237 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for another 82, all while committing no turnovers, to guide USF to a 34-14 lead on Memphis in the third quarter of the St. Petersburg Bowl at Tropicana Field.
Grothe's last two touchdowns have come on third downs, and this might be his nicest pass of the game, floating a high pass over a defensive back to receiver Dontavia Bogan -- his first touchdown grab of the season.
Grothe -- who had totaled three touchdown passes in USF's previous five games -- gets to watch the rest from the sidelines, as backup Grant Gregory is taking over late in the third quarter.

Times sportswriter Greg Auman, who covers USF, will post news and thoughts on the Bulletin and we invite your participation in the comments area.
Much deserved--the game is in the bag, and he's a senior who has given fine service. Nothing to do with his dad.

Backup coming in before the 4th quarter? Wish my daddy was the OC.
