The University of Miami has relaxed its transfer restrictions on former Plant quarterback Robert Marve, now allowing him to transfer to nine of the 12 SEC schools, his high school coach told the Times.
Plant coach Robert Weiner confirmed Friday evening that Marve, who started 11 of 13 games for Miami as a redshirt freshman last year, will be able to transfer to all SEC schools with the exception of Florida, LSU and Tennessee.
"It's a breakthrough in the terms that hopefully both sides can come closer to an agreement for the benefit of the kid," Weiner said.
Initially, Miami restricted Marve from transferring to school in the ACC, SEC and any other Division I school in Florida.
Earlier in the day, Marve's father, former NFL player Eugene Marve, told the Miami Herald that he is being treated for prostate cancer, citing his illness as one of the reasons he wants his son to stay nearby.

Oops! UCF

UC plays Miami next year...the week before we do.
Posted by: Al | January 06, 2009 at 02:50 PM
Is UCF on their future schedule? If not, that seems like the most logical place for him. They need a QB in the worst way, it's closer to home, and they aren't quite as full of themselves as those at the U (remember, as UCF likes to point out, they've actually won something in the past 5 years, as insignificant as CUSA is. Neither USF nor the U have even been close).

There is no doubt that Wiener and Marves parents orchestrated contact with various schools probably as early as late October when the kid knew he was going to become academically ineligible. So he transfers under the guise of "seeking a better fit" and sits out a year, which he has to anyway because of the academic issues. When is someone going to make this kid face the consequences of his own decisions and grow up?
Posted by: Sage1 | January 05, 2009 at 04:49 PM
All of the posturing on both sides mkaes me want to puke! The truth is the kid is academically ineligible hence the reason for the transfer. UM tried to be kind to the kid and use missed classes as the reason for his not going to the bowl game. In turn when Coach Shannon said that Harris is his starter going into next year he had no choice since Marve is ineligible. So now Marve turns to his true colors and throws a temper tantrum and says in essence "I am taking my ball and going home". The sad thing is that there is a school out there that will show its true colors of not caring about academic integrity and take this turd.

Since Eugene Marve wants Robert to play near home, how is being prohibited from playing for LSU or Tennessee a problem?
It sounds like Robert Mauve's inherited his attitude from his old man.

Miami are scheduled to play UCF in 2009
Posted by: Al | January 05, 2009 at 01:38 PM
We don't need or want the kind of baggage that Marve would bring with him.
Shannon is an idiot. The imposition of the no SEC or schools in the state of Florida line is garbage. Things didn't work out for him in Miami, let him go and live his life somewhere else. I understand blocking UF, USF and the the ACC as those are teams that Miami is scheduled to play. But the SEC, FIU, FAU, UCF etc... Shannon doesn't really have any good rationale to block those schools.
Yes Marve could have done better, tried harder and not been a trouble maker, but Shannon is bringing more attention to this situation with what appears to be nothing more than a petty grudge.

Ken,
Do you think if Marve was getting his way at Miami (allowed to cut classes, allowed to play despite a low GPA, a lock on the #1 QB slot...his family matters would even be an issue...USF, UCF, and UF were all closer to home, yet he chose to go to Miami.
Excuses, Excuses!
Posted by: Al | January 04, 2009 at 11:33 AM
Leavitt, like most college football coaches, won't release a scholarship player to a school USF would face during that player's eligibility.
Shannon, along the same lines, has a right to block a transfer to USF for those reasons. Shannon has let up on most of the SEC, and the ACC block is also standard practice in any major conference. (The Big East does not allow transfers within its member schools in football and basketball).

I know nothing about the kid or his father, except what I've read here and in the papers the last few days, but prostate CA can be very slow developing, something one can live with and live well with for a good long time, and like all cancers, it can escalate.
Posted by: Ken | January 04, 2009 at 10:03 AM
Marve could remain close to his family...he could grow up, act responsible, go to classes, hit the books, and fight for the starting QB job...but it appears that he isn't up to the challenge.
Posted by: Al | January 04, 2009 at 09:54 AM
Don...If the tables were turned do you think Jim Leavitt would allow Marve to transfer to Miami, Florida, FAU or FIU?
Posted by: Al | January 04, 2009 at 09:45 AM
Sounds like Robert needs to grow up. He's lived the privileged life of the son of an NFL baller, and he's been coddled every step of the way. I don't hear him taking much responsibility for what went wrong in Miami. Mostly what your hear is that he and Shannon couldn't get along because Randy wanted him to grow up and be a man instead of a spoiled prima donna. I suggest and Old School coach like Coach Schnelly at FAU. It seem as though the Miami hierarchy is attempting to limit his post-Miami success by dictating where he goes which makes you wonder what they are afraid of. I don't think USF would be a good fit, but that's just one man's opinion.
P.S. Best of luck for his father, and a full recovery.

Baloney! He's playing the sympathy card..hoping to the restrictions lifted from his spoiled brats transfer.
He was diagnosed 5 years ago (2003)....how come the kid didn't stay near home rather than going to Miami?

Eugene Marve is a friend of mine. he's a great guy. I haven't followed his son's career too closely. But I will speak up for Eugene Marve, the second best player ever to wear #99 for the Bucs, a hell of a guy with great taste in music.

Cancer is something none of you guys want to go through or have a family member go through...

I had to serve the guy drinks though, since I was the waiter on his boat.

The last conversation I had with a USF grad was on a boat going from Key West to Ft. Myers. Fortunately the conversation didn't last long. He was piss drunk and passed out after about 10 minutes. Go figure!

I pity the fool that graduates from UCF!
Posted by: Mr. T. | January 03, 2009 at 11:11 AM
This kid has UCF written all over him. He could dominate that crummy league and finish near the top of his class. The last conversation I had with a UCF grad I had to explain to him that I ordered ham, not onions on my pizza.
Go north to UCF Mr. Marve.
Posted by: BA | January 03, 2009 at 10:48 AM
Let him go to USF. He'll pull a 1.4 GPA and get arrested at least twice. Just what Leavitt looks for in a player.
Posted by: Chalko | January 03, 2009 at 08:14 AM
let him go to ucf

Screw Marve's dad too, don't give us that BS.
